I spilt something on a canvas bag - decided to clean this and a pile of other soft rucksacks, laptop bags, etc.
Chucked them all in the bath with some pre-wash soaker, and they're now in the washing machine. The colour of the water in the bath was revolting - and I'd been carrying these bags around with me - YUK
They didn't look dory - but obviously carting round in city grime, etc.
I occasionally throw lightweight totes in with the washing - but how does everyone else keep this kind of stuff clean? - and how often?

Not enabled voting - definitely BU carting them round dirty Blush

I put my bags for life through the machine now and again as they can get pretty dirty

lolums · 22/08/2021 15:47

I put them in the washing machine on the quick 15 min wash.

E.g. those canvas shoulder bags and the DC's school rucksacks (blurgh at being kicked around the floor all day, bus floor, spilt packed lunch, loo floor probably).

The rucksacks get hung out in the sun (or in front of fire in winter). probably do once at end of each term, unless they have been plonked in a muddy puddle beside football field or had something particularly grim split inside.

EspressoDoubleShot · 22/08/2021 15:48

Some of you must go through life gagging & perplexed in a germphobe haze
As you are disgusted by purses,car seats, hand bags,proximity of other people’s clothes
Bet you’re the posters who can smell sanitary pads a block away. Sneeze if perfume is worn and come out in hives if there’s a plug in air freshener in the building

lolums · 22/08/2021 15:49

There are studies on the levels of germs in those reusable shopping bags - grim reading.

Spudlet · 22/08/2021 15:50

I can honestly say I've never noticed the state of anyone's purse in the supermarket. Who stares like that? So rude! Confused

I have also never washed a bag, apart from one cotton tote bag that I got from a tourist place. The picture printed onto it came off - it was ruined. I was so sad about it, it reminded me of a really nice trip.

So don't wash your bags, people Grin

OttilieStonelady · 22/08/2021 15:51

@mrsborisjohnson

Oh great, a thread where all the good little women shame all the bad, dirty, nasty women for not washing their tote bags often enough.
Yep
godmum56 · 22/08/2021 15:52

@1forAll74

In the oldie days,people had canvas and stringy type bags, and kept them all their lives, without washing them.. They just shook all the bits of shopping messy bits out of them, and carried on like this for years.
My late husband used to bag pack in Tescos as a teen in the 60's....he said the stink from those filthy bags has never left him
PricklesAndSpikes · 22/08/2021 15:56

@Thewiseoneincognito

I often look at people carrying filthy bags and wonder if they’re aware how scruffy they look or if they even care, probably low self esteem.

Ever been at the supermarket and someone pulls out a purse that looks like they dug it up from landfill? Gross. The same with mobile phone covers.

Let’s not even start on shoes either, some people were dragged up.

What a bizarre and goady thing to think and say. You'd be horrified at my purse, had it for decades and it is decidedly dog-eared, my sister bought it for me and it is embossed with a message from her. I will keep using it until it literally falls to pieces and cannot hold my money anymore.

Oh, and my self esteem is just fine, thanks very much! Grin

transformandriseup · 22/08/2021 15:58

Actually I do wash these kind of bags sometimes, and I do mean just sometimes, usually before a holiday. I don't judge others who don't though.

LH1987 · 22/08/2021 15:59

Genuinely LOL’d at the fact that people must have low self esteem if their handbags aren’t perfectly clean!

Tootiredtocryagain · 22/08/2021 16:01

I accidentally weed on my rucksack on a walk last week myself. I thought about washing it but it doesn't smell. Meh.

This is actually hilarious Grin

I'm so glad I have better things to do with my life than looking at other people's shopping bags.

Just remembered I have washed one bag - a linen tote I used as a beach bag in the Gambia. It was so dirty I put it on the washing machine. Of course, I also caught a terrible stomach bug from not washing my hands soon enough after handling cash (the notes were utterly filthy and smelled very bad) so I washed everything I brought home!

Congressdingo · 22/08/2021 16:03

Errr very very rarely do I wash bags.
The dog walking rucksack goes in the washer when its covered in mud, not solely muddy spots. The bags for life when something spills in one. My personal handbags are leather or suede and possibly get a wipe down once or twice in their lifespan.
Life's too short or my handbags dont cost so much that I cant just replace when they get too grotty

Nocutenamesleft · 22/08/2021 16:05

I must admit though

I don’t think I’ve ever looked at someone else’s bags?!? I can’t even think of a time I’ve even noticed someone having a dirty handbag. Or tote bag?!?

To be fair. The really really grimy pushchairs I think I’ve only ever seen twice in my life.

I’m surprised people spend that much time looking at another woman’s handbag. If I see a nice one that I like. I admire it. But other than that. Nope. Don’t think I’ve ever seen one.

Fortunately for me, my self worth doesn't come from my appearance. You can be the cleanest, best dressed, prettiest person in the world, the nastiness will rot you from the inside out.
Nocutenamesleft · 22/08/2021 16:08

@UnGoogled

A too-clean environment is actually detrimental to our immune systems, and at any rate, I highly doubt your average dirty handbag or scruffy shoes are a bio hazard.
I asked my dr many many years ago. Why there’s been a steep rise in people being allergic to bee stings.

He said. We’re too hygienic. Hence we’ve got not a lot of immune system. Hence more allergies.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/08/2021 16:09

life is too busy to worry about the outside of my bag let alone the inside

SoupDragon · 22/08/2021 16:09

Generally speaking I try not to lick my shopping bags and the items that go in are usually wrapped or in a weighing bag anyway.

lannistunut · 22/08/2021 16:11

probably low self esteem
Grin amazing!

Yeah maybe low self esteem. Or maybe just, you know, jobs and families and friends and hobbies to keep them busy rather than cleaning bags. A grubby bag isn’t going to cause health issues Hmm.
Chikapu · 22/08/2021 16:12

I wash my canvas tote bags every week after I've done a grocery shop but I've never washed any other kind of bag.
