Disgustingly Filthy

I spilt something on a canvas bag - decided to clean this and a pile of other soft rucksacks, laptop bags, etc.
Chucked them all in the bath with some pre-wash soaker, and they're now in the washing machine. The colour of the water in the bath was revolting - and I'd been carrying these bags around with me - YUK
They didn't look dory - but obviously carting round in city grime, etc.
I occasionally throw lightweight totes in with the washing - but how does everyone else keep this kind of stuff clean? - and how often?

Not enabled voting - definitely BU carting them round dirty Blush

We're meant to wash our tote bags? FML. Do we iron them afterwards too? Confused

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 22/08/2021 16:13

I think people with low self esteem have to make themselves feel better by sneering at other people's bags, purses etc. All a bit nouveau if you ask me.

Bbub · 22/08/2021 16:14

I agree life is too short to be too bothered about this! If a bag is visibly dirty then I'll clean it or maybe chuck a tote in with a normal wash now and again, but I don't think it's a hygiene or self esteem issue for me 😂

Meruem · 22/08/2021 16:14

I once bought myself a lovely white leather handbag. At the time I was commuting on London Underground every day. It was actually a bit scary how quickly it would get dirty. And I never put it down anywhere or anything, it was just over my shoulder. I kept thinking of all that grimy pollution entering my lungs. I don’t think in normal circumstances a bag would get that dirty. That’s London for you!

Neverrains · 22/08/2021 16:15

@EspressoDoubleShot

Some of you must go through life gagging & perplexed in a germphobe haze As you are disgusted by purses, car seats, hand bags, proximity of other people’s clothes Bet you’re the posters who can smell sanitary pads a block away. Sneeze if perfume is worn and come out in hives if there’s a plug in air freshener in the building
Probably the same posters who claimed recently on a thread that they can smell if someone they encounter in public hasn’t rigorously washed their lower legs in the shower that day Grin

After the wash they can look worse - really crumpled and almost in need of an iron I have found 😅 so all in all best not to bother unless they are caked in something gross!
SunshineCake · 22/08/2021 16:16

Low self esteem because they carry a dirty bag?

Bloody hell.

Myshitisreal · 22/08/2021 16:16

I have a bit of a backpack obsession, kipling specifically, and I wash them regularly. On a 30degree 30ninute wash, they dry quickly. They never get to the point that they're filthy. They're incredibly fit for purpose.

People always seem to have dirty purses 🤮

WorraLiberty · 22/08/2021 16:17

Meh! If it doesn't look dirty it's not getting washed.

I can't remember the last time I ate dinner off my rucksack, or sat on a train sucking my handbag.

EspressoDoubleShot · 22/08/2021 16:17

Haha yes @Neverrains and they can inhale dirty hair, they can detect dandruff
Christ imagine if someone had a mingy fanny near them, they’d spontaneously combust

VladmirsPoutine · 22/08/2021 16:17

I notice there's a trend in people sometimes trying to 'out filth' each other r.e. how they don't shower daily or how they allow their pets to lounge about on their kitchen counter tops etc etc so people not washing their bags is really just to be expected.

justfuckoffthelottayer · 22/08/2021 16:18

@Thewiseoneincognito

I often look at people carrying filthy bags and wonder if they’re aware how scruffy they look or if they even care, probably low self esteem.

Ever been at the supermarket and someone pulls out a purse that looks like they dug it up from landfill? Gross. The same with mobile phone covers.

Let’s not even start on shoes either, some people were dragged up.

God almighty princess judgypants why don't you mind your own business and stop thinking you're better than everyone else cos your purse is nice and clean whereas someone else's is not. So you judge people by their shoes bags and purses you know nothing about them they may not be able to afford a new one, they may have just walked the dog, they may be using their dead grandmother's bag for sentimental reasons they may have just escaped as a refugee from Afghanistan for all you know or they may just not give a flying fuck what small minded people think and have much more important things to worry about like most people.
Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 22/08/2021 16:19

I don't keep them clean. Unless they get something spilt on them, then I would just wipe it off.
You will probably find a lot of the colour that came off was dye.

Angryfrommanchester1 · 22/08/2021 16:23

This has got to be a contender for peak MN.

Lol’ing at the weeing on a rucksack and a purse that looks like it’s been dug up from landfill.

SpeakingFranglais · 22/08/2021 16:24

I do wash supermarket bags for life and rucksacks but like every couple of years or if there are obvious spillages.

I would not clean a handbag, my few are too expensive and too precious although my everyday Radley rucksack made of fabric goes in the machine every few months.

SoupDragon · 22/08/2021 16:25

I notice there's a trend in people sometimes trying to 'out filth' each other

Equally balanced by a rise in the number of competitive clean freaks.

Flatdisco · 22/08/2021 16:28

If its fabric it goes on the washing machine. If it's plastic or leather ill wipe down and clean the inside in the sink. The plastic toest get washed inside if they get gross or thrown out of they aren't my nice heard bags.

It's surprising how gross they get!

EspressoDoubleShot · 22/08/2021 16:28

And there’s the competitive cleanliness & revulsion posters who are triggered by mastication, baby lead weaning prams, car seats, and door handles
So fastidious in their hygiene that they wash with hibiscrub and wear plastic overshoes just in case

Disneycharacter · 22/08/2021 16:30

I put my linen tote in the wash as I use it for raw meat from the supermarket as I hate mixing it in with other foodstuffs

PricklesAndSpikes · 22/08/2021 16:30

@SoupDragon

Generally speaking I try not to lick my shopping bags and the items that go in are usually wrapped or in a weighing bag anyway.
Aw, you're missing a trick... don't you just open all the packets and tins into the bag and then eat it straight out of there with a spoon? Saves on all the tedious unpacking and then the washing up. You have to lick all the corners though to get the best bits! If you lick it properly, it doesn't need to go in the wash, especially if you let the dog have a go after you... Wink Grin
VladmirsPoutine · 22/08/2021 16:30

It took an entire global pandemic for some people to not only learn how to wash their hands but for some people to even start washing their hands at all!!

Really? I can’t think of anything more insecure-lower-middle-class than noticing and judging the cleanliness of someone’s bag Confused

All the bluest-blood, well-brought up and secure people I know wouldn’t give a flying shit what some random Hyacinth Bucket in the supermarket thought of the state of their shoes. And mobile phone cover?! Who even looks at those Confused

FelicityBeedle · 22/08/2021 16:35

Am I the only one who loves a ragged well worn backpack or bag? Not even my own. I love the idea that they’ve lived with their owners through all sorts and are still going strong!

EspressoDoubleShot · 22/08/2021 16:36

Lol at mn were being called insecure-lower-middle-class is a put down
Class courses through mn. It’s at the heart of mn

Bloody hell.

Ha I know!

It's like some weird through the looking glass thing where one side thinks "how low must your self esteem be to carry a dirty bag?" and the other thinks "how low must your self esteem be that a dirty bag feels like something significant?"
