I spilt something on a canvas bag - decided to clean this and a pile of other soft rucksacks, laptop bags, etc.
Chucked them all in the bath with some pre-wash soaker, and they're now in the washing machine. The colour of the water in the bath was revolting - and I'd been carrying these bags around with me - YUK
They didn't look dory - but obviously carting round in city grime, etc.
I occasionally throw lightweight totes in with the washing - but how does everyone else keep this kind of stuff clean? - and how often?

Not enabled voting - definitely BU carting them round dirty Blush

@NannyAndJohn

It's gross. Just thinking about people putting their water bottles or an apple in their bag amongst five year old crumbs and tissues gives me the shivers.

Surely it's not too much to ask to give it a quick clean with a baby wipe once every couple of weeks? Two minutes tops.

I would rather spend two minutes doing something else.
ThinWomansBrain · 23/08/2021 19:53

Don't forget the germs and bits of poo leaping up from a toilet brush that has been used to scrub the inside of a pooey pissy toilet bowl

Oh dear, I prodded the soaking bags with the loo brush
Maybe I need to wash them again?Confused

It is a Joseph Joseph silicone loo brush, if that makes a difference.

@DreamingOfTheSouthOfFrance

I washed my dog walking rucksack recently after a dog weed on it..... wouldn't normally bother
Sure urine = ammonia = bleach, sort of, right? So it probably was cleaner with a wee scoosh of the dog pee. Smile
User7458 · 23/08/2021 20:20

I washed my Kipling rucksack the other week as some food leaked into it, it came up very well and didn't lose colour, I wouldn't wash my Seasalt hessian type shopping bags though as they would probably look a mess afterwards. My large green Waitrose shopping bag looks a bit worse for wear so I'm probably judged in the queue but I doubt that would wash well either.

Life's too short. Sorry.

Allinadayswork80 · 23/08/2021 20:43

Oh dear lord, now I’ve heard it all

SingleMamaGY · 23/08/2021 20:48

I wash my toddlers backpack for nursery and it comes up like new. I empty my handbag and the amount of crap that comes out astounds me, wouldn’t wash it tho

caspersmagicaljourney · 23/08/2021 21:20

@blueshoes

Life's too short. Sorry.
Yep I totally agree. Once these items break or look skanky, straight in the bin.Wink
Imnewhere1991 · 23/08/2021 21:29

I put mine in the washing machine

Toomuchtrouble4me · 23/08/2021 21:48

Maybe they weren’t that grimes, might have been some dud coming out?

Toomuchtrouble4me · 23/08/2021 21:52

Oops! ...

Maybe they weren’t that grimy, might have been some dye coming out?

Bertiebiscuit · 23/08/2021 21:58

Ffs get a life you lot , you really must be short of something to obsess about 🙄🙄

Dnaltocs · 23/08/2021 21:59

If it looks drab, I give it a wipe with a Baby Wipe. If it’s still not great - do it again. Too many are obsessed re cleaning. It’s a bag! I agree life is too short. I’m more concerned with those who don’t use face masks and/or are not inoculated. Now that’s a real worry. I have an acquaintance who isn’t in inoculated and no mask - goes to festivals and doesn’t want it known he’s not inoculated! Help needed for his sanity. Bet he doesn’t clean his wallet or phone case.

@labazslovesliving

what on earth is it with people weeing on their shoes and bags?
Spend more time in the Great Outdoors!
JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 23/08/2021 22:20

People wash bags? I genuinely didn’t know that was a thing and I thought I was a clean person? I can’t imagine a time when I would ever want to wash my two most used bags- Mulberry and YSL. They’d be ruined.

EspressoDoubleShot · 23/08/2021 22:31

You don’t wash them you take those to the handbag clinic for a freshen up
They all mean canvas backpacks and fabric bags

Jeannie88 · 23/08/2021 22:38

Occasional wash when looking dirty and anti bacterial spray and wipes inbetween. X

TheChosenTwo · 23/08/2021 22:45

None of my handbags can go in the washing machine and I don’t have bags for life or anything like that. I don’t own a tote bag!
The dc throw their rucksacks in the machine once a year maybe but tbh only if something has been spilt on them.
I’m struggling to work out the danger to their lives with daily germs on their bags touching their clothes but I’m not not going to think much longer about it because, well, it’s all a load of bollocks Grin

Darlingx · 23/08/2021 23:08

My father ran a hotel and his mother looked after it . Parents separated I might add. Was watching the French and Saunders sketch ‘ Chambermaids’ where they use the cloth to wipe the toilet on the toothbrushes or something equally disgusting and my ancient Grandmother would do similar she would clean the bathroom with the same cloth starting around the loo area . I was horrified and I also remember a heavily pregnant woman smoking downstairs it was grim and exactly like a farce . Funnily enough the idea of hotels puts me off. Esp as most people are there to have a dirty weekend BlushGrin

Darlingx · 23/08/2021 23:17

My mother always taught me not to put my bag on toilet floor or on a table as in think where your bag has been and where you put your bag. I put all my reuseable bags in the wash and I clean out my bag often but as my bags are always leather I don’t tend to wipe them down unless they looked dirty . I don’t use babywipes but its ment to be the best on leather but bad for the environment as single use so that’s a bit of a dilemma.

Darlingx · 23/08/2021 23:23

I remember a similar thread about how old people’s bras are and how often they wash them and then it got me thinking how old my bikinis were. Everyone had such varying ideas and standards it was quite interesting how many people had ancient bras they hardly washed and like people say in the old days this would have been even less.

BigRedFrog · 23/08/2021 23:31

I wonder where my self esteem sits on the scale of high to low, being as I use collapsible crates for my shopping and if I need to buy a carrier, I use it to line the kitchen bin.
I only possess one handbag which gets a quick once over with the dishcloth now and again.

MakeMathsFun · 24/08/2021 00:10

Spray with anti-bac every so often and dry out on a radiator. That should keep the germs at bay.

Another thing to do is (starting with a clean, dry canvas bag), treat it with a waterproofer, such as a suede-protector spray (available from good shoe shops). This should make it harder for the dirt to stick.

Lily019 · 24/08/2021 00:13

I probably have 99 problems at the moment, can't say a manky bag is one of them. My life revolves around family health concerns, finances, job security, getting over a very sudden end to what appeared to be a long stable relationship and the aftermath of my life being poured down the toilet. (Adult) Kids all here, Im here, still winning! Who even knows if you've recently washed your bag, and even, who actually cares?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 24/08/2021 00:34

@Meruem

I once bought myself a lovely white leather handbag. At the time I was commuting on London Underground every day. It was actually a bit scary how quickly it would get dirty. And I never put it down anywhere or anything, it was just over my shoulder. I kept thinking of all that grimy pollution entering my lungs. I don’t think in normal circumstances a bag would get that dirty. That’s London for you!
The London Underground or as I refer to it the home of black snot. When I was doing the backpack thing it, without fail, would lead to me blowing out black snot and a sinus infection every time.

My poor sister who visited me thought she was dying until I told her it was normal.

Yeah, dirty bags are the least of your worries there.
