Hot tub awkwardness

RGinaPhalange · 17/08/2021 20:48

Am I being unreasonable or is this awkward and weird?

My friend invited me round for drinks, I accepted the invite, we haven’t met up for ages and though it would be lovely to have a catch up.

After I agreed she said oh great, I’ve invited “other friend” who I haven’t met before. All fine, will be nice to meet one of her other friend and have a girly night.

Then she dropped the bomb “I’ll set up the hot tub”. NOOOOOOOOO! Why? Seriously, Why?

Then today I get a text saying “other friend” has invited her other friend and now it just want to go into hiding.

I have to admit I’m not a fan of shared hot tubs at the best of times and I feel completely f*ing awkward meeting new people in semi nude state.

UABU - this is fine and completely normal, you are over reacting

UANBU - run! Go into hiding untill the whole awkward affair is over

There's no point in voting either way really because it's an entirely personal choice.

I'd be inclined to tell your friend you're looking forward to it but you won't be getting in the tub.

KingdomScrolls · 17/08/2021 20:52

Tell her you've got a horrible fungal infection you can't get wet

AdaFuckingShelby · 17/08/2021 20:52

Just tell her you wouldn't have accepted the invitation if you had known there was a hot tub involved and ask to rearrange for another day.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/08/2021 20:52

I'd tell the truth. I don't like floating in a warm soup of other people's dead skin, thanks. Especially, but not limited to, strangers.

3scape · 17/08/2021 20:52

I am a fan of hot tubs in total defiance of MN "law". But. No. Fucking. Way.

JonSnowedUnder · 17/08/2021 20:53

No, I wouldn't fancy that. I would be having a heavy period that day I think!

Chasingsquirrels · 17/08/2021 20:53

I'd hate this - and I've got a hot tub!

Aquamarine1029 · 17/08/2021 20:53

I'd be honest. I wouldn't put my big toe in that nasty cesspool of filth and disease.

Dogoodfeelgood · 17/08/2021 20:54

I think especially after this year it’s easy to feel social anxiety! Whenever I get this “oh god I want to hide feeling” I usually force myself to go and end up having a good time. Yes a hot tub does sound slightly intimidating as you can’t escape, but you’re not going to arrive and be ushered straight in! You’ll probably have a glass of wine and snacks at a table and the hot tub might be suggested and potentially not even used if not everyone is enthusiastic! You should go Smile

Theboywiththearabstrap · 17/08/2021 20:55

There is no way I would get in someone else’s hot tub 🤢

ComDummings · 17/08/2021 20:56

Ewww

Hell No...

Cancel 😱

SwedishEdith · 17/08/2021 21:00

Eww, no, I'd not go. It's not about social anxiety, it's about not wanting to sit in a hot tub with people you don't know.

Aquamarine1029 · 17/08/2021 21:03

Exactly. Just the thought of it makes my stomach turn inside out.
AngryWhompingWillow · 17/08/2021 21:04

@RGinaPhalange Ummm it's a NO from me. Hot tubs are grot-ridden filth pits. boak

YANBU.

emsyj37 · 17/08/2021 21:05

I must be the only person ever who would be fine with this Grin. If I had a hot tub I could see myself quite easily inviting people over to sit in it and chat over prosecco, it would never have occurred to me that this would not be a universally appealing invitation!

RGinaPhalange · 17/08/2021 21:06

The thing is I love meeting new people, I’d literally talk to anyone about anything. I’m just not keen on being up close and personal in my swimsuit in a hot tub with people I haven’t met before.

I feel so much better knowing I’m not the only one who thinks it’s weird.

I love my friend to bits, she is so lovely and I don’t want to hurt her feelings or be the awkward one. We’ve been loosing touch recently and was hoping a catch up would helps us get a bit closer.

Not this close though, 🙈😂 way too close

I'm shocked at everyone's vitriolic responses against hot tubs. What do you all think of swimming pools?! They're filled with skin flakes, sweat, wee, snot, and shit particles.

legalseagull · 17/08/2021 21:08

Any friend would understand "I feel uncomfortable I'm my costume with people I've never met" but otherwise play the period card

Anonanon1234 · 17/08/2021 21:09

You guys not heard of chlorine?? Take it none of you swim in public pools then?

whatthejiggeries · 17/08/2021 21:11

What is this mumsnet issue with hot tubs. I don't know anyone who wouldn't enjoy a dip in a friends tub. That said to the OPs point I wouldn't be keen with people I didn't know due to being in a swimsuit

What is this mumsnet issue with hot tubs.

It’s tiresome as fuck.

Fine for people not to like them, we all like different things, but all this falling over each other to say how revolting they think they are is the kind of carry on I’d expect from idiotic teenagers.
