Hot tub awkwardness

Am I being unreasonable or is this awkward and weird?

My friend invited me round for drinks, I accepted the invite, we haven’t met up for ages and though it would be lovely to have a catch up.

After I agreed she said oh great, I’ve invited “other friend” who I haven’t met before. All fine, will be nice to meet one of her other friend and have a girly night.

Then she dropped the bomb “I’ll set up the hot tub”. NOOOOOOOOO! Why? Seriously, Why?

Then today I get a text saying “other friend” has invited her other friend and now it just want to go into hiding.

I have to admit I’m not a fan of shared hot tubs at the best of times and I feel completely f*ing awkward meeting new people in semi nude state.

UABU - this is fine and completely normal, you are over reacting

UANBU - run! Go into hiding untill the whole awkward affair is over

I'd do it. I have done it with friends and strangers of both sexes.

I've never felt awkward.

Thing is a lot of people tend to not have their chlorine levels etc correct and so they aren’t as ‘bacteria free’ as people think unless they are well maintained and checked by the owner. I would find it awkward OP, imagine if one of them were horrid, you’d have to be that close to them, no thank you 😂

Having given this some thought I reckon it’s one or both of these things.

Usual tedious MN hygiene posturing.

An annoyance at the democratisation of previously perceived luxury items that manifests as a desire to suck all the fun out of them.

Personally I like the sex ponds. The fun sponges are welcome to their hygiene high ground,

I go to a lot of clothing optional events and have on a few occasions, squeezed into a 6 person tub when there have been 15+ people in it. All completely naked and most, if not all, strangers!
No sexual activity - just squeezed in a tub having a great time!

Feels like there's quite a bit of hot tub bravado on the thread. It doesn't really matter if anybody else 'would do it'. OP is uncomfortable with the idea and doesn't want to do it.

Tell her you've got your period and don't fancy using the hot tub at that time of the month but happy to park up in a garden chair next to the tub and join the chat.

I’d be totally fine with this as long as there was space and they weren’t big hairy dudes. But I have no probs being in my swimming costume around strangers (ex-competitive swimmer, once you’re doing deck changes you really don’t care much any more!) and while I’m sure hot tubs are gross, I’m basically fine living in ignorance of the details. I could see lots of folks who wouldn’t like this.

It’s easy - you go, take your swim wear, say you’re not up for it right now but have some drinks and get chatting. If the mood takes, hop in. If not, remain by the side.

What is it with hot tubs? They’re awful things. I’d bail & leave them to it.

I think I’d feel like I was on Love Island, meeting strangers in a hot tub.

I don't like hot tubs, especially those that are near the house on a back yard area, they look quite ridiculous.

They are also loud! Our neighbour has one, it is not that near to us so the noise is not bad for is, but they have to shout to each other over the pump. I know not everyone likes the same thing, but I really don't get it as they are both loud and ugly, so don't make me feel relaxed or treated.

I am sorry I have to isolate. If been in contact with a positive case so want my PCR results back before I go out so I know I'm safe, can we re arrange ? "
