To get a fruit bowl

Basically so the kids can help themselves to fruit as they can't reach up to the fridge and their constant demand for snacks is driving me mad!

I remember having one when I was little and it was great for helping myself to fruit and for letting fruit ripen.

But I also remember mealy apples and mushy grapes and fruit flies in the house.

Also, are they a bit naff? I've never been to anyone's house in the last 20 years who has one.

Doesn’t everyone have a fruit bowl??!!! I use a net cover in the summer to keep off the odd fly

Elouera · 13/08/2021 11:24

Where do you keep your fruit currently? I also have a little hook to hang bananas. Everyone I know has a fruit bowl! Surely the fruit flies are just if you you've let fruit go mouldy. Confused

ElfDragon · 13/08/2021 11:24

I have one.

It may well be naff, but I don’t care.

I always had one growing up, and I use a beautiful bowl I was given as a wedding present.

My dc are probably older than yours (youngest is 9), but I have one for similar reasons to you - fruit is a snack the can always have.

I don’t put grapes/soft fruits in the bowl - it’s standard apples/oranges/pears/bananas (but only because they don’t stay around too long as otherwise they ripen other fruits too much). Mind you, with 3 dc, and fruit eaten at every meal and sometimes in between, none of it stays around too long 😂

If it is something you think will work for you, who cares what anyone else thinks?

sleepyhoglet · 13/08/2021 11:28

Is it the style of bowl you find naff? I mean surely most people keep their fruit in a bowl. We alternate between a glass one (wedding gift we didn't ask for) and a woven one.

I am probably the same with breadbin. Need one but it always looks so bulky so get rid

ParadiseLaundry · 13/08/2021 11:29

We keep apples, pears, grapes and soft fruit in the fridge and bananas and fruit that needs to ripen like nectarines and avocados on the bench, which looks bloody messy when I think about it so I don't know why I don't already have a fruit bowl to keep it all together Grin

Beginning to think me and all of my friends are weird for not having fruit bowls now!

I have a fruit bowl too. At the moment nectarines, oranges, apples. Watermelon and grapes /berries live in the fridge.

alltheemptyfields · 13/08/2021 11:30

You can have a fruit plate or a fruit box if you prefer Confused

where do you put the fruits that don't belong in the fridge?

RainingYetAgain · 13/08/2021 11:31

No, not naff.
I was passing through DS Uni town about 2 weeks after he started. The list of items he decided he needed was a fruit bowl for his room. Bought him a metal one, which Ds2 comandeered when he went to Uni.
Several friends copied the idea.

Insertfunnyname · 13/08/2021 11:33

How odd I don’t think I know anyone WITHOUT a fruit bowl. Why would it be naff?

sleepyhoglet · 13/08/2021 11:33

Also way way to extravagant in cost but how elegant is this fruit 'bowl'

I hate apples from fridge. There is no reason for fruit to go off or mushy if you buy reasonable amount. Only fruits I kerp in fridge are soft berries and grapes. And watermelon 😁

ExpressDelivery · 13/08/2021 11:33

I have one to try to make it easy for teens to eat fruit instead of cereal and toast it doesn't work

We do get fruit flies in summer though and I think it's important you have a fast turnover of fruit. You can't put a week's worth out in one go, you need to replenish regularly.

My mum keeps fruit in the tumble drier, if you want weird! Apparently it's the perfect mix of cool, dark and well ventilated.

ParadiseLaundry · 13/08/2021 11:34

Do apples keep ok out of the fridge? I remember horrible rubbery golden delicious apples from the fruit bowl when I was a kid but that might be because fruit used to hang around longer in the 90s.

We have a fruit bowl, I can't imagine where we'd keep our fruit otherwise.
We only keep berries and grapes in the fridge.

Well of course apples keep ok out of the fridge. Otherwise shops would also have them in a fridge. Dark and cold like cold pantry is great if you need to store them ling. We used to have ours in basement for months
Ninkanink · 13/08/2021 11:37

It’s actually not great for your children to help themselves to fruit all the time. Much better at mealtimes.

But that’s beside the point really.

Nothing wrong with a fruit bowl.

pippistrelle · 13/08/2021 11:37

Fruits bowls could be the new shoes on/shoes off divide! Maybe people that don't have them have other convenient places to store unrefrigerated fruit, but I never seem to have enough cupboard space to store the things that I want in cupboards, so a bowl it is. (Actually, a wire basket thing, but its function is fruit bowl.)

Me too! I thought they were a standard household item!
pippistrelle · 13/08/2021 11:39

Now I want an elegant new fruit bowl...

ForCluckSake · 13/08/2021 11:39

We have a fruit bowl for the same reason I was sick of hearing muuuuuuuum am hungry so my reply is now.. .. The fruit bowl is there amazing how unhungry they become sometimes Grin we keep apples pears and oranges and bananas in ours.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 13/08/2021 11:47

We have a two-storey wire fruit basket, and we don't even eat that much fruit Hmm We also have an egg bowl on the worktop. I don't really care what anyone else has or thinks of our arrangement!

HalloHello · 13/08/2021 11:50

Golden delicious are always rubbish apples to be fair.

We have a fruit bowl, keep all fruit in there except berries and grapes.

Thesearmsofmine · 13/08/2021 11:50

Surely most homes have a fruit bowl? We keep most fruit in the fridge in the summer due to fruit flies but the odd bits that can’t go in go in our fruit bowl.

CoRhona · 13/08/2021 11:51

We have this one, it keeps the fruit separate so it's much easier to see what we have.
