To get a fruit bowl

ParadiseLaundry · 13/08/2021 11:19

Basically so the kids can help themselves to fruit as they can't reach up to the fridge and their constant demand for snacks is driving me mad!

I remember having one when I was little and it was great for helping myself to fruit and for letting fruit ripen.

But I also remember mealy apples and mushy grapes and fruit flies in the house.

Also, are they a bit naff? I've never been to anyone's house in the last 20 years who has one.

I don't have a fruit bowl!

Orla1970 · 13/08/2021 18:57

I’ve always had a fruit bowl. How have you managed OP? Next you’ll be telling us you don’t have a bread bin! 😱🤣 I also used to have a fruit bowl on my desk in the office too, replenished every Mon. People used to laugh at that but often about 3 pm would come in for a rummage! x

Lulu1919 · 13/08/2021 19:00

We have a fruit plate....but keep grapes n soft fruits in fridge

Riddo · 13/08/2021 19:01

I have a fruit bowl which currently has bananas, satsumas and apricots in it. I keep apples in the fridge as they seem to stay crisper for longer that way and DH and DS are fussy about them.

I also make a fruit fly trap every summer which is effective.

I may have a bowl as posted earlier but I do not have a bread bin
Ninkanink · 13/08/2021 19:54

I don’t have a bread either.

DuesToTheDirt · 13/08/2021 19:57

I hate eating cold fruit. If we are having strawberries or something that keep better in the fridge I get them out a while before we are going to eat.

MIL keeps all her fruit in the fridge (fair enough, she lives alone and always seems to have a lot of fruit in), but an apple or satsuma straight from the fridge is just not as nice.

PattyPan · 13/08/2021 20:38

We have two fruit bowls, one for bananas and one for other stuff - tomatoes, apples, avocados, anything that needs ripening. Berries, grapes and anything more than a couple of stone fruit and apples at a time stay in the fridge to stop them going over.

Belledan1 · 13/08/2021 20:48

I have a fruit bowl . I have got rid of my bread bin though bread in the cupboard with cereal.

I have had a fruit bowl out of some sort for the past 40 years
The only fruit I keep in the fridge are strawberries, raspberries, blueberries etc and things like melon once I’ve chopped it up
I have a big bowl with things like apples oranges bananas and kiwis - then frequently a smaller bowl with plums and apricots and an even smaller bowl if I have grapes or cherries
Separate bowl for lemons n limes if there’s too many to fit in big bowl
You are making me realise I have a serious fruit habit! 😂

StrangeToSee · 13/08/2021 20:58

We have one that looks like cut glass but is actually plastic, which is lucky as DC have knocked it onto the floor a few times.

Personally I don’t like it, I’d rather fruit stayed fresh in the fridge (you always seem to get a mouldy tangerine lurking in the fruit bowl). And I don’t like the smell of it in hot weather, and flies landing on washed apples etc. Half of it gets thrown away as I find fruit off putting to look at.

A bowl of oranges looks better but mixed fruit I don’t like.

beigebrownblue · 13/08/2021 23:34
@beigebrownblue

Teeth are easily damaged by the acid/sugar in fruit and this is exacerbated if it’s eaten separately to a meal. It’s also basically just straight sugar as far as the body is concerned (from an energy perspective), so if they eat fruit as a snack they will probably want more fruit or other snacks again soon after. ‘Better than not eating fruit at all’ is neither here nor there as fruit isn’t all that great from a dietary perspective anyway, other than berries - vegetables are much more important in terms of nutrients and should really make up the majority of veg/fruit intake. Of course children tend to prefer fruit so it’s easy enough to feel like you ought to be giving them loads daily or that it’s an ideal go-to snack. Obviously if the children are veg refusers it probably does make sense to offer a little bit more fruit.

However this is really all beside the point - I only mentioned it in case OP hadn’t considered that angle.

@ParadiseLaundry I use an old fashioned crystal bowl as our fruit bowl. It’s perfect and looks great in our kitchen.
If you say so Ninkanink

Actually my comment was sarcastic.

Sorry not to include relevant emoji.

Relatively speaking. I repeat relatively speaking

eating fruit is way better than so many other things I could mention...

And yes, surprisingly enough I have a brain.

Perhaps you might 'consider' there may be various 'angles' that you hadn't considered.

I'm not sure you have teenagers, but when and if yours get to be that age you will discover that life is not the extremes of polarity you seem to consider it is.

All a learning curve eh?

beigebrownblue · 13/08/2021 23:37

And nink...

So glad your crystal fruit bowl 'looks great' in your kitchen,

even if you don't agree with fruit being offered in general.

Lol.

beigebrownblue · 14/08/2021 00:15

We've got a fruit TROLLEY.
From ikea. With wheels.

Mostly because DD loves Watermelon and it doesn't fit in our kitchen. (The watermelons).

I realise that watermelons are the devil's work for young people's teeth. but there you go...

PickAChew · 14/08/2021 00:25

We have one. All bananas go in it as you can't chill them. Anything else lives in the fridge and only goes in the bowl a few at a time, so it stays fresh.

MrsToothyBitch · 14/08/2021 00:27

I have a fruitbowl, I think almost everyone I know has some form of fruit bowl. Mine lives out on the kitchen work top in front of the breadbin and it's a thing of beauty I treated myself to- I love it. Dump a weeks worth of fruit in at a time- oranges, nectarines or kiwis & any lemons, occasionally papayas or avocados. My lemon-shaped kitchen timer hides in there, too, as a joke Grin. Soft fruit - usually blueberries, does live in the fridge.

Weirder is that my bread bin rarely has a loaf in it. Our bread loaves live in the freezer, but crumpets, rolls, spare rice cakes & the occasionally bag of crisps may hide within.

PickAChew · 14/08/2021 00:28

And watermelon stays on the fridge. Gers portioned into takeaway containers when the time comes to dispatch it.

Yayayaya20 · 14/08/2021 00:57

@beigebrownblue how rude have you been to that OP who was being perfectly reasonable in their response?

It’s well known that sugary foods - including the fruit that we all perceive as the healthiest thing we can give our DC - should ideally be eaten at meal times. Every time we eat anything during the day this is an acid attack on our teeth so while it may seem like a good idea to allow children free access to a fruit bowl it’s just not as wholesome as we think it is. Savoury snacks between meals are preferable from a dentistry point of view although I do understand there’s then other things to thing about like fats.

Yayayaya20 · 14/08/2021 00:58

I knew this thread was giving me dejavu and it was the dining table one it was reminding me of! What a thread!

Doublestar · 14/08/2021 00:59

A fruit bowl naff? What on earth?

Where else would you keep your fruit?

I'm confused..

MistySkiesAfterRain · 14/08/2021 01:03

More pesticides keeping fruit fresh for longer today. Win not win.

milkyaqua · 14/08/2021 02:51

It's not like you're thinking of getting shagpile carpeting in your bathroom... it's a fruit bowl! You don't even have to get a fruit bowl, you can just designate any large bowl or bowl-like container you own as the fruit bowl.

Whirlywooo · 14/08/2021 03:01

I have a fruit bowl. It currently houses some onions, a sock and some loose change.

avamiah · 14/08/2021 03:31

Have I missed something as I know it’s latish ??😶😶

A Fruit Bowl?
Do you mean the bowl I have in the kitchen with apples, bananas, a couple of nectarines, one orange and the last few grapes in??

So you can help yourself at anytime.🙄

I thought everyone had a fruit bowl ?.
