To get a fruit bowl

Basically so the kids can help themselves to fruit as they can't reach up to the fridge and their constant demand for snacks is driving me mad!

I remember having one when I was little and it was great for helping myself to fruit and for letting fruit ripen.

But I also remember mealy apples and mushy grapes and fruit flies in the house.

Also, are they a bit naff? I've never been to anyone's house in the last 20 years who has one.

Surely everyone has a fruit bowl? Why are they naff? You have a fruit bowl on your counter, the fruit just isn’t in an actual bowl.

I have 3 fruit bowls, and no worktop space... Any recommendations for more efficient fruit storage options?! Grin

@honeybuns007

This is the weirdest thread. Am I missing something? Fruit bowls naff??? Are jugs naff? Chairs? Cutlery? I am agog that anyone would think that a fruit bowl is anything other than what it is. Where would people put their fruit if not in a bowl?
Yes, it's so bizarre!
liveforsummer · 13/08/2021 14:07

People don't have fruit bowls? Are they the new toilet brushes of mn? Just don't put your bananas with the rest of the fruit. The only thing I keep in the fridge is berries

woodhill · 13/08/2021 14:07

Always had a fruit bowl

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/08/2021 14:08

Strange that this should pop up - only this morning I saw a beauty in Home Bargains of all places. If anyone likes the wooden type it's an absolute steal at £7 (out of stock online but plenty actually in the shop)

@ParadiseLaundry

Do apples keep ok out of the fridge? I remember horrible rubbery golden delicious apples from the fruit bowl when I was a kid but that might be because fruit used to hang around longer in the 90s.
Good apples and bad apples are not the same thing - those apples were like that not due to being in the bowl. Apples keep better out of the fridge as the fridge is damp.

We currently have three fruit bowls because we have so much fruit . Just cover it with a tea towel if worried about flies.

BeaLola · 13/08/2021 14:16

We have a wooden fruit bowl - full of apples and oranges / bananas are separate bowl and all raspberries grapes and strawberries in fridge oh and a melon

emeraldcity2000 · 13/08/2021 14:19

I also have a tomato bowl. Tomatoes are ruined by the fridge.
My mil thought I was insane when I purchased this tbf.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 13/08/2021 14:28

This is funny because I put some fruit in a large bowl on Wednesday in the hope of achieving the same goal. I've just watched by daughter take an apple from the fridge instead of the bowl.
When I asked her why she said she thought the fruit in the bowl was for decoration only!

gabsdot · 13/08/2021 15:21

If they'll eat up the fruit quickly then yes, but otherwise fruit will last much longer in the fridge.

newnortherner111 · 13/08/2021 15:22

I'm surprised OP you don't have one.

VestaTilley · 13/08/2021 15:39

YANBU! We always had one growing up and have one still. I’m tempted to get a fruit plate instead to avoid the mushy apples situation, but I’d never not have one!

You shouldn’t keep fruit in the fridge- it really reduces the flavour.

OaxacaChihuahua · 13/08/2021 16:45

Everyone I know has a fruit bowl!

ImFree2doasiwant · 13/08/2021 16:48

I have a glass fruitbowl. Apples, pears, oranges , bananas all live in the bowl. Grapes , strawberry etc in the fridge

felulageller · 13/08/2021 16:50

I assumed everyone had a fruit bowl!

2bazookas · 13/08/2021 17:22

We've always had a fruit bowl. It lives in the kitchen. At the moment it has kiwi fruit, a melon, apples, bananas lemons, and a last pear that needs to be eaten today.

The strawberries and raspberries are in the fridge.

StoneofDestiny · 13/08/2021 18:01

Don't know anybody without a fruit bowl. Mine is a 3 tier job to separate bananas from apples and citrus fruit. No flies around them.

pippistrelle · 13/08/2021 18:35

I clicked on the bonkers link posted by @VeganVeal above, and now I'm being followed round the internet by ridiculously expensive and not very nice bowls. Thank you. Still, it makes a change from the bracelet I looked at once months ago on Wolf and Badger that usually follows me round.

JulesJules · 13/08/2021 18:36

I've got three - never had fruit flies either. A pottery plate for the bananas, a lovely bowl for apples and pears, and a pink glass cakestand for the citrus. Not quite sure why I separate them all (well except the bananas, obviously) but I don't like them all mixed up for some reason

dustofneptune · 13/08/2021 18:45

Haha I don't know what my life has become, but hey. Chipping in for the hell of it.

Yesss, obviously you should get a fruit bowl ;) I have a retro carved wood one, a geometric copper wire one, and a hammock for bananas.

You just want to keep bananas, melons, avocados, etc. (those really fast-ripening fruits) separate. Otherwise you'll end up with a melon that's gone mouldy on the bottom, where it touches the apples or whatever.

God speed.

sleepyhead · 13/08/2021 18:45

We have a fruit bowl. Turnover is swift so nothing has a chance to go mouldy (plus Inc wash it fairly regularly).

This time of year the fruit flies always seem to appear so it goes in the fridge for a few weeks.

Hushpuppy1 · 13/08/2021 18:46

This is so strange. Why would anyone think a fruit bowl is odd, or look for permission to have one. Please start thinking for yourself.
