To get a fruit bowl

Basically so the kids can help themselves to fruit as they can't reach up to the fridge and their constant demand for snacks is driving me mad!

I remember having one when I was little and it was great for helping myself to fruit and for letting fruit ripen.

But I also remember mealy apples and mushy grapes and fruit flies in the house.

Also, are they a bit naff? I've never been to anyone's house in the last 20 years who has one.

So now

DGFB · 13/08/2021 12:41

We have one for the same reason. too many unhealthy snacks.. now the kids know not to ask and just help themselves to fruit!

SquirryTheSquirrel · 13/08/2021 12:45

I hate fruit bowls - too many memories of over-ripe fruit in childhood. Also the different fruits taint each other.

I keep my room temperature fruit in a cupboard, in the bag it came in so that it doesn't taint anything else.

If you are buying a fruit bowl, consider one with a hook for hanging the bananas to keep them away from other fruit as apparently the gases let off by bananas cause other nearby fruit to ripen faster.
Alternatively I believe wrapping the stem bit where the join to the bunch in cling film / tinfoil keeps fruits flies away.

In my 40 years of life I have always known not to put bananas in the fridge! Turns the skin black etc

Recently I have been told actually they keep longer it's just the skin that goes horrible!

Does anyone keep their bananas in the fridge or should I just stick one in there and try it out?

ShrinkingViolet9 · 13/08/2021 12:57

I bought one of these a few years ago for keeping fruit in. It's an attractive shape, 26cm in diameter, and makes a good fruit bowl but you can also use it for serving salads, pasta dishes, rice etc:

White porcelain Nova serving bowl, 26cm diameter. Dishwasher and microwave safe. £8.00.

I don’t keep bananas in the fridge for exactly that reason. It just looks too odd to me to have black bananas.

I don’t buy a lot of fruit at any one time so things don’t tend to get squashed - at the moment my fruit bowl only has two bananas in it which I’ve been leaving to over-ripen so I can make a banana loaf. Tonight when we go to the shops I’ll get a bag of apples. But we don’t have children and we don’t eat a lot of fruit for health reasons.

Ninkanink · 13/08/2021 12:58

And yes, bananas do cause other fruits to ripen more quickly - if you want go encourage ab avocado to ripen more quickly, put it in a paper bag with a banana or two.

What a strange question, like asking if fresh flowers are naff!

We've always had various fruit bowls; one in the kitchen and another in the living room and another in the home office. Healthy snacking. Apples, pears, tangerines, kiwis, etc. You can stop the fruit getting rubbery by refrigerating it at night.

I have some gorgeous fruit bowls, an Iznik pottery one, an Alessi one and one from Kelly Hoppen.

Keep bananas longer by covering the stalk. We have multiple fruit bowls and no problem with flies particularly. Fruit goes fast here. I would never keep it in it’s original packaging. It sweats.

emmathedilemma · 13/08/2021 13:02

I'm more baffled that you don't have a fruit bowl!!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/08/2021 13:04

Never heard of a fruit bowl (or box or whatever) been naff, or having any real connotations at all. Just thought everyone had one!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/08/2021 13:05

Got a separate banana hook

GoodnightGrandma · 13/08/2021 13:05

I’ve got one, I thought everyone did 🥴

lilmishap · 13/08/2021 13:09

I have those cheap brightly coloured plastic baskets you get in packs of 3 or 5. Bananas get their own basket as we get through loads but none of us like the bruises, unless we have Grapes/Berries which go in the Nana bowl. Berries/Grapes aren't stored for long in this house so there's no need to refrigerate they're gone within an hour or 2 usually.

Did not know Fruit Bowls were in any way naff or controversial!

I keep mine out of the fridge but I just saw the other day that apparently you can freeze bananas in their skin.

We don't have a fruit bowl. I keep everything in the fridge except from bananas which live in the pull out cupboard. I much prefer cold fruit and the kids can easily get stuff out of the fridge. A fruit bowl would just be another thing to dust around at our house!

Mpsister · 13/08/2021 13:14

I have two fruit bowls

Wombat64 · 13/08/2021 13:15

We have 3, one for bananas & a mix in the other two but we go through loads, all eaten in a week, so no mankiness.

ParadiseLaundry · 13/08/2021 13:15

@ChazsBrilliantAttitude that's interesting, I think I vaguely remember that thread at the time!

honeybuns007 · 13/08/2021 13:17

This is the weirdest thread. Am I missing something? Fruit bowls naff??? Are jugs naff? Chairs? Cutlery? I am agog that anyone would think that a fruit bowl is anything other than what it is. Where would people put their fruit if not in a bowl?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 13/08/2021 13:19

There is no need to keep apples or pears in the fridge.

Hemingwaycat · 13/08/2021 13:19

We have one, I thought most people did? We don’t get fruit flies. I keep easily perishable fruit in the fridge still but things like apples, pears and bananas go in the fruit bowl.

Tomorrowisanewday · 13/08/2021 13:19

I have two - an arty metal one for bananas, and another almost-plate bowl for the rest.

Peanutsandchilli · 13/08/2021 13:20

And oh yes to frozen bananas. I don't freeze them in their skin but if they're just starting to brown (I hate brown bananas) I'll slice them and pop them in the freezer. They taste like ice cream. Frozen fruit of any type, especially berries, is a hit with my kids. My teenagers can make a full bag disappear in seconds.
