To think that I sleep on the left hand side of the bed?

Somehow this came up in conversation with dh, and I said that I sleep on the left hand side of the bed. He looked very puzzled and said that HE sleeps on the left hand side, I sleep on the right.

If you stand at the foot of our bed and look at it, I sleep on the left, dh sleeps on the right. Therefore I sleep on the left hand side.

DH's totally wrong argument is that, when we are lying in bed, I am on his right and therefore on the right hand side.

So, wise ones of MN, AIBU to think I sleeping the left hand side of the bed?

You sleep on the right. It’s the side you are laid on and are putting in bed; not what you see at the foot of it.

Fruityb · 05/08/2021 08:32

Pointing not putting

ShinySquirrel · 05/08/2021 08:32

You are so wrong.

CaptainCarp · 05/08/2021 08:33

Sorry OP but YABU.
I'm with DP you're on the right. (I sleep on the left.. Like him)

AliMonkey · 05/08/2021 08:33

I agree with your DH.

PotteringAlong · 05/08/2021 08:33

I’m team DH on this one, sorry… Grin

HunterHearstHelmsley · 05/08/2021 08:33

The side you sleep on is based on when you're lying in it. So if you are on his right then he sleeps on the left.

Mammyofasuperbaby · 05/08/2021 08:33

You are on the right hand side

BikeRunSki · 05/08/2021 08:33

I would say the side of the bed you are on is the side you are on if you are lying in it, on your back. It will be different if you are on your front!

Ughmaybenot · 05/08/2021 08:34

I’m with DH on this one, sorry!

TwitchyLittleFerret · 05/08/2021 08:34

Nope. You sleep on the right! You'll see how unreasonable you are in a few more replies Grin

Howmanysleepsnow · 05/08/2021 08:35

You sleep on the left.
By DH’s logic you’d be on the right if he lies on his back, the left if he slept on his front and god knows where you’d be if he was a side sleeper Confused

Sparklfairy · 05/08/2021 08:36

The only way you sleep on the left too is if you sleep with your head at the foot of the bed Grin sorry OP!

Palegreenstars · 05/08/2021 08:36

If I look at you your left foot would be your right foot and your right foot would be your left foot. However, your left foot remains your left foot. So your husband sleeps on the left.

Not looking good for me so far.....

Do I admit at this point that I've also never understood why we talk about "right hand drive" cars when in the UK we clearly drive on the left hand side of the road?

Because the driver is seated on the right.

Oh dear OP Grin

Fruityb · 05/08/2021 08:45

Because that’s where the wheel is!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

gobackanddoitproperly · 05/08/2021 08:46

He’s correct..

orangejuicer · 05/08/2021 08:47

Thanks OP, you've made me feel decidedly more intelligent this morning Grin

Oh my goodness. It is right hand drive because the driver sits on the right. For the avoidance of doubt, they are on the right whilst inside the car, not whilst outside standing in front of the car and looking in. 😂. Same as with the bed, you sleep on the right.
Helendee · 05/08/2021 08:50

DH sleeps on the left side.

EdgeOfACoin · 05/08/2021 08:51

Another vote for your DH here, I'm afraid!

Helendee · 05/08/2021 08:53

@Howmanysleepsnow
How does the OP sleep on the left when she lies to the right of her husband? It’s physically impossible. She sleeps on the right hand side.

Cocomarine · 05/08/2021 08:56

Oh dear. At least you seem to have a sense of humour about it - the car 🙈🤣

Lie on your bed - head at headboard, in case that needs saying. Hold your hands in front of you like this, but you looking at back of your hands: 🙌🏻 See how your index figure and thumb form an L on one side? That is your LEFT side. And the left side of the bed.

If you’re stood at the foot of the bed looking up, you’d need to use the phrase “left facing”, as in - it’s on my left when I’m facing it. But it’s still not the actual left side of the bed!

ErrolTheDragon · 05/08/2021 08:56

Grinthis is why sailors have the sense to designate the sides of boats 'port and starboard' - the remain constant regardless of which way round you're facing.
The foot of the bed corresponds to the stern so you're on the starboard side.
