To think that I sleep on the left hand side of the bed?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/08/2021 08:31

Somehow this came up in conversation with dh, and I said that I sleep on the left hand side of the bed. He looked very puzzled and said that HE sleeps on the left hand side, I sleep on the right.

If you stand at the foot of our bed and look at it, I sleep on the left, dh sleeps on the right. Therefore I sleep on the left hand side.

DH's totally wrong argument is that, when we are lying in bed, I am on his right and therefore on the right hand side.

So, wise ones of MN, AIBU to think I sleeping the left hand side of the bed?

@ErrolTheDragon

Grinthis is why sailors have the sense to designate the sides of boats 'port and starboard' - the remain constant regardless of which way round you're facing. The foot of the bed corresponds to the stern so you're on the starboard side.
The foot of the bed in this scenario corresponds to the prow of the boat, not the stern. I can't cope now.

Near side is nearest the kerb

BillMasen · 05/08/2021 09:37

@DappledThings near side is nearest to the kerb. I have to think about that too. Yes passenger and driver side work too

@SquirrelFan but your door may be on the other side to mine.

Maybe in the same way that “stage left” is defined as always being from the perspective of the performer not the audience we should use “bed left” and “bed right”

Again, from the perspective of the performer not the audience… (not sure that works)

Helendee · 05/08/2021 09:41

I guess it’s a matter of perspective but when you are both in bed I still say you are on the right side.

Notjustanymum · 05/08/2021 09:44

I sleep to the left of my DH, therefore I’m on the left. Apparently this is a tradition which leaves DH’s right hand free so he can protect me in the event of an intruder entering the bedroom (I dunno - I think he’s supposed to have a sword to hand or something!) which leads to a burning question - if your DH is left-handed, should he sleep on the left for the same reason?
OP I think that people generally determine the orientation of their furniture/cars Etc. from their perspective of being in them, rather than looking at them😁

Babdoc · 05/08/2021 09:45

There used to be a theory that the dominant partner in the relationship slept on the right side of the bed, with their right arm uppermost to hug their partner when facing them. (using the majority and your DH’s view of the sides).
So if you accept DH’s opinion, you can have the satisfaction of being the dominant partner!
My late DH was right handed and slept on the right, I am left handed and slept on the left, so in our case we each had our dominant arm available. True equality!

MyShoelaceIsUndone · 05/08/2021 09:53

You don’t face the bed to see what side , surely you lay on the bed and see what side is yours

merrymouse · 05/08/2021 09:55

Where is your left hand when you are lying in bed?

brokenbiscuitsx · 05/08/2021 09:56

OP I don’t think you’re as wrong as people are saying. It’s all about perspective surely…

I’m looking at my sofa, the right hand side has an L shape bit. I generally sit here, when I’m sat down it’s the left. If someone asked me which side I sat on, I’d probably say the left hand side (as I’m sitting down) but technically it’s the right side though.

If you asked someone to paint the left side of your sofa, you’d be annoyed if they painted the right side, wouldn’t you?

When I talk about my neighbour’s to the right, I’m talking about them in the right as I look at the house not when I’m in the house ?!

brokenbiscuitsx · 05/08/2021 09:58

If you asked someone to paint the left side of your sofa, you’d be annoyed if they painted the right side, wouldn’t you?

I mean, the left side when the sat down, so the right side when looking at it 👀

ComDummings · 05/08/2021 10:00

I’m team DH here

burritofan · 05/08/2021 10:02

What does it matter?
Does anything on this time wasting website matter? OP started the discussion; not me!

If you asked someone to paint the left side of your sofa, you’d be annoyed if they painted the right side, wouldn’t you?
…why would you ask someone to PAINT your sofa?! Confused

GladAllOver · 05/08/2021 10:03

Although I did once go to work with one navy shoe and one black shoe. In my defence, they were identical in every other way, and I did have them on the right feet
You've got two right feet? Now you really are confused!

brokenbiscuitsx · 05/08/2021 10:04

why would you ask someone to PAINT your sofa?!

I knew someone would mention this. It was the first thing I could think of as an easy visual. It’s not that deep.

You can actually paint upholstery though, some furniture restorers do it, but that’s not the point.

potter5 · 05/08/2021 10:10

Made me smile. Thanks.
You sound like a nice person!

JohnLemmon · 05/08/2021 10:11

OP, I think the same as you and you're on the left. Though it occurs to me now that if I looked down at the bed from the headboard then I'd be on the right. Never, ever thought of it that way!

bilbodog · 05/08/2021 10:14

Loving this - laughing so much!! Never thought about painting my sofa before…….. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

BillMasen · 05/08/2021 10:18

I sleep on the port side of the bed but I’m right handed so does that mean my partner is dominant?

pinkyredrose · 05/08/2021 10:20

Your DH is right.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 05/08/2021 10:21

@EmmaGrundyForPM

If you are dippy, then so am I. I also never really got the right hand drive thing.

I also don’t understand what “inside lane” means?

Also, and this is a source of much weary sighing from DH, what does “a round of toast” mean?? How many slices?

And! This one drives DH up the wall, but if someone uses two slices of bread, places some cheese on one slice, puts the other slice on top…you have a sandwich, no?! If you then cut the “sandwich” in half, how many sandwiches do you now have?? I say 2, he says 1.

LadyCatStark · 05/08/2021 10:27

@Cocomarine

Oh dear. At least you seem to have a sense of humour about it - the car 🙈🤣

Lie on your bed - head at headboard, in case that needs saying. Hold your hands in front of you like this, but you looking at back of your hands: 🙌🏻 See how your index figure and thumb form an L on one side? That is your LEFT side. And the left side of the bed.

If you’re stood at the foot of the bed looking up, you’d need to use the phrase “left facing”, as in - it’s on my left when I’m facing it. But it’s still not the actual left side of the bed!

Is there really any need for that level of patronising?? The OP was clearly being lighthearted.
ViceLikeBlip · 05/08/2021 10:28

Soz, you're wrong. It's the same as a car - cars in the UK are called right-hand drive because when you're sitting IN the car the driver is on the right-hand side. (although I do find this a bit confusing, because I think we should call it left-hand drive because we drive on the left-hand side of the road....)

Inaseagull · 05/08/2021 10:29

I wonder if some people view the world from the outside looking in and others from the inside looking out?

MrsJackRackham · 05/08/2021 10:34

@LyndaSnellsSniff no no no, if you offered me a sandwich and only brought one slice of bread folded over I'd be raging. That is know in Scotland as a half piece - half a sandwich. A sandwich is two slices of bread, supermarkets agree. You don't get two sandwiches in a box, you get one.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/08/2021 10:39

@Inaseagull

I wonder if some people view the world from the outside looking in and others from the inside looking out?
ooh, a philosophical approach to the question.

Maybe it's like Schrodinger's Cat, it can be both Left and Right simultaneously until you observe it..... ,(no, I don't get quantum mechanics either Grin)
