To think that I sleep on the left hand side of the bed?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/08/2021 08:31

Somehow this came up in conversation with dh, and I said that I sleep on the left hand side of the bed. He looked very puzzled and said that HE sleeps on the left hand side, I sleep on the right.

If you stand at the foot of our bed and look at it, I sleep on the left, dh sleeps on the right. Therefore I sleep on the left hand side.

DH's totally wrong argument is that, when we are lying in bed, I am on his right and therefore on the right hand side.

So, wise ones of MN, AIBU to think I sleeping the left hand side of the bed?

Loathe as I am to side with a DH, he’s correct. Bed sides are the same as stage directions – stage right/stage left is from the actor’s perspective, not the audience’s.

Why would you view it from standing at the bottom of the bed, and not while you’re actually in it?

Hoosi · 05/08/2021 08:58

I know what you mean OP, I’m not entirely convinced either way. We just have a ‘my side’ and ‘your side’.

DH just compared in to ‘stage left’ and ‘stage right’ which would agree with your DH.

Mustardbay · 05/08/2021 09:00

Oh no I agree with you OP, never really thought about it though.

Disneyblue · 05/08/2021 09:03

Honestly OP, I'm with you here. If I was going to bed, I'd be getting in on the left side as I see it. I think of it that way, not whilst in it.

You could argue it's both really...

How does the OP sleep on the left when she lies to the right of her husband? It’s physically impossible. She sleeps on the right hand side.[/quote]
But I sleep on my front so DH sleeps to the right of me.....

You know which is your left hand though don’t you? But if somebody stood facing you, your left hand would be on the right as they look at you, it is still your left hand though. This is similar to somebody standing at the foot of the bed, the left does not become the right because of the vantage point.

Why wouldn't you? What does it matter?
PurpleFlower1983 · 05/08/2021 09:06

Your DH is right.

IonaLeg · 05/08/2021 09:06

I would say the same as you, I sleep on the left as you face the bed. Now that I think about it though it does seem illogical, so maybe I should switch allegiance to your husband’s theory Grin

This is hilarious OP

Yes, we've always referred to it like that, hence this conversation only coming up now after 27 years of marriage 🤣

Beds don’t have hands though. It’s just an object, the sides of which can be subjective according to your viewpoint. If a large table occupied the same space, it wouldn’t have fixed left and right sides, it would depend where you were looking at it from.

I’m not going to argue it because I don’t really have a strong opinion, I can see both sides.

usually! Although I did once go to work with one navy shoe and one black shoe. In my defence, they were identical in every other way, and I did have them on the right feet.

It’s from the perspective of being in the bed, so your H is right

This is why ships have port and starboard, cars have near side and offside. Perhaps we need terms relating to beds?

Absolutely. Which is why I'm quite shocked by how rude some people are being here. The OP isn't incorrect, it just depends on your viewpoint. (Driver seat issue aside)...
spooney21 · 05/08/2021 09:15

Op I agree with you. Buying a corner sofa, when deciding what side you want the chaise/ arm to be it's when you are standing looking at it directly. So a left hand corner suds has the arm on the left but if you sat in it the arm would be on your right. So many people make this mistake (I worked in a furniture shop when I was a student!).

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/08/2021 09:16

@Disneyblue thank you for defending me but I don't think anyone's been rude to me. Obviously the majority of people don't think the same way as me, so it's interesting to discover that what I've always thought of as the left hand side is actually the right.

It's just odd to realise that something I've always thought was obvious is in fact wrong. Although it has to be said I've probably only ever thought about sides of a bed for about 3 minutes in my whole life up to today 😂

It's a good job you see the funny side!

I'm with the DH too.

But I've never managed to learn the nearside and offside thing because I can't remember what the nearside is nearest to. Is it the left edge of the road? Or the centre of the road? Or the driver? I have to say driver side and passenger side when describing any issue with the car.

HeronLanyon · 05/08/2021 09:28

You definitely sleep on the LEFT ! So do I. Have to hang top leg over the side.

readytosell · 05/08/2021 09:28

I'm with you OP as this is how we would view it in my home country (from foot of bed). Literally nobody would do it as your OH.

However I can understand why neither is wrong, there is no standard definition. As long as everyone gets a good night's sleep, not something I'd give much headspace to!
