To think that I sleep on the left hand side of the bed?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/08/2021 08:31

Somehow this came up in conversation with dh, and I said that I sleep on the left hand side of the bed. He looked very puzzled and said that HE sleeps on the left hand side, I sleep on the right.

If you stand at the foot of our bed and look at it, I sleep on the left, dh sleeps on the right. Therefore I sleep on the left hand side.

DH's totally wrong argument is that, when we are lying in bed, I am on his right and therefore on the right hand side.

So, wise ones of MN, AIBU to think I sleeping the left hand side of the bed?

The side of the bed you sleep on is clearly defined when you're actually sleeping in it. That's the only frame of reference which makes sense in the context of sleeping.

You're far too logical. Grin

I'm going with @whatisthisplease, I love those images. I was all prepared to one of those rare OPs on AIBU who is told that, yes, YABU and concedes gracefully but whatisthisplease has produced a game changer.

As soon as this thread turned to left hand/right hand drive cars I thought "I hope someone mentions the absolute mindfuck that is the inside and outside lanes" The outside lane is clearly on the inside of the road.

DF once explained "if you imagine just your side of the road, all the other cars are on your inside" Hmm In that situation the middle lane is the only inside lane! (Assuming 3 lanes)

Now we've helped you with the bed situation OP, I'd like you to explain the lanes you so readily understand please and thank you Grin

(For what it's worth I'm with your DH, I sleep on the right hand side of the bed....next to the bedside table on the left hand side of the bed....)

HeronLanyon · 05/08/2021 18:39

Even if lying in bed and someone were to suddenly ask me what side of the bed I was on (high jinks here, eh?) my mind would mentally get up and look at myself in bed from the end of the bed. I am wedded to this nonsense ! I accept there is an element of nonsense about it. I would do the same with ends of sofa, and even sides of garden (I think always from the end of the garden looking towards a house) etc.

Spacerader · 05/08/2021 18:47

Another one who agrees with your dp sorry op

ErrolTheDragon · 05/08/2021 18:49

My dachshund says we're all wrong. Clearly beds are meant for sleeping across, none of this left/right nonsense.

Sorry YABU.

So is @LyndaSnellsSniff - when you cut a pizza into 6 do you have 6 pizzas too?

DappledThings · 05/08/2021 19:54

@Hollyhocksarenotmessy

Time one.

If you have a meeting next Tuesday and it's changed to next Monday - is it being moving backwards a day, or forwards a day?

I say forwards but I don't know if my brain is weird as I used to work in a company where everyone else would say backwards. Used to drive me spare. Am I the weird o e or them?

I would say forwards as well. It is being brought forward in time to make it earlier than originally planned.
LyndaSnellsSniff · 05/08/2021 19:59

@Essentialironingwater

Mmmm...6 pizzas....drool

It's even more of a mindfuck when you bring roundabouts into it. The inside lane is not the one nearest the centre of the circle but the one going round the edge. The outside lane does not go round the edge but goes inside the inside lane. Lunacy.

@EmmaGrundyForPM Sorry......With your Dh here! Grin

user1471604848 · 05/08/2021 20:10

I agree with you, OP!

I consider I sleep on the left side of the bed (left while standing at the end looking at it).

Neondisco · 05/08/2021 20:15

I agree with your dh. I also asked my partner before telling him about the post. Just by asking which side of the bed I sleep on. He also agrees with me. As seemingly do must of the pp's.

lazylinguist · 05/08/2021 20:26

I'm with you on the sides of the bed, OP. And after all, as you point out, the 'looking at it from the perspective of being in bed' thing only works if you're lying on your back!

I don't understand what people are on about with the cars though. It's the car that's being described as 'right hand drive', not the road. And it makes more sense to describe it as right-hand drive from the perspective of when you're actually sitting in it, because the phrase includes the action - i.e. right-hand drive = you drive it from the right-hand side of the car. This thread really gave me the best laugh...
And also a bit of a headache.
I had to rethink a lot of things I thought I already knew 😂
Thanks OP. Flowers

kowari · 05/08/2021 20:45

I see it the same as in a car or sitting on a sofa, it's the viewpoint from when you are in/on it. The lying on your front viewpoint is an argument if you are both on your front and never sit in the bed I guess.

kowari · 05/08/2021 20:48

I'm with you on the sides of the bed, OP. And after all, as you point out, the 'looking at it from the perspective of being in bed' thing only works if you're lying on your back! Or sitting in bed reading. I lie on my side but will always roll to my back not my front on waking, or when looking at my phone, so I see back as default.

PatriciaHolm · 05/08/2021 20:54

Are we the only ones who swap around depending on where the window is? DP always has window side...

So in DP's old house, window was on left hand side of bed as you lie in it, so he slept on LHS.

In my house, and his new house, it's on the RHS, so that's where he sleeps.

Hotels the same - he sleeps nearest the window. (Basically he's always hot and wants the window open and wind on him, I'm not and don't!)

Magpiecomplex · 05/08/2021 21:42

@PatriciaHolm We do the same. I have the window side because I'm less disturbed by light coming through the curtains.

I’m actually with the OP on this one 😂
Iggly · 05/08/2021 21:44

I’ll add. If i pointed at something on the bed, I’d say “it’s on the left” as if I were standing at the foot of the bed.

So that’s how I describe where I sleep.

Kylorey · 05/08/2021 21:51

I wonder if some people view the world from the outside looking in and others from the inside looking out?

When I was little I struggled with the idea that when the sea is covering the beach, the tide is in. When it's further away, the tide is out. To me as a child and still now it should be the tide is in when it's not covering the beach as it's gone back in on itself and when it's covering the beach it's out from itself, covering the land. I sort of saw it from the perspective of the sea Grin

LaProcureure · 05/08/2021 22:05

Just checked with the husband. Relieved to find his interpretation of bed position is the same as mine! (And your DH’s @EmmaGrundyForPM, sorry 😬)

Topseyt · 05/08/2021 22:06

@EmmaGrundyForPM

Not looking good for me so far.....

Do I admit at this point that I've also never understood why we talk about "right hand drive" cars when in the UK we clearly drive on the left hand side of the road?

Team DH here. You sleep on the right hand side of the bed.

With regard to cars, those designed for use in countries which drive on the left have the steering wheel and controls on the right hand side of the car, when facing forwards. This is to give the driver the best overall view of the road. So they are "right hand drive."

Cars designed for use in countries which drive on the right have the steering wheel and controls on the left hand side of the car (facing forwards). Also to give me driver the best overall view of the road. Therefore they are described as "left hand drive."
