To think that I sleep on the left hand side of the bed?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/08/2021 08:31

Somehow this came up in conversation with dh, and I said that I sleep on the left hand side of the bed. He looked very puzzled and said that HE sleeps on the left hand side, I sleep on the right.

If you stand at the foot of our bed and look at it, I sleep on the left, dh sleeps on the right. Therefore I sleep on the left hand side.

DH's totally wrong argument is that, when we are lying in bed, I am on his right and therefore on the right hand side.

So, wise ones of MN, AIBU to think I sleeping the left hand side of the bed?

@EmmaGrundyForPM

Not looking good for me so far.....

Do I admit at this point that I've also never understood why we talk about "right hand drive" cars when in the UK we clearly drive on the left hand side of the road?

Because the driver sits on the right side of the car.
EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/08/2021 12:13

@BumbleMug yes, I think that's behind my thinking. Although to be honest, I've never really given it any thought before 😅

I'm left handed. If you are facing me and watching me write, would you say I'm right handed? My left hand would be on the right side of me from your perspective looking at me. Imo left and right in bed is from your perspective when you are laying in it, sitting up, facing forwards, not when you at the foot of it and are facing it.

DM had an unambiguous way of specifying sandwiches: 'do you want twice across the loaf?"

brokenbiscuitsx · 05/08/2021 12:43

@DappledThings

*I also don’t understand what “inside lane” means?I can't get my head round that one either. I think the inside lane is the furthest left on a motorway but logically to me it should be the furthest right because that's closest to the centre or inside of the whole road.
I agree with this.
Anotherhill · 05/08/2021 12:50

I’m a vet and you wouldn’t believe how many people come in and say “ he’s lame on my right”
“ ok, so his left then? “ -
“ it’s my right”
“ when you’re facing the dog ??”

Like this?

To think that I sleep on the left hand side of the bed?
LyndaSnellsSniff · 05/08/2021 12:58

@burritofan

We used to make giant sandwiches with a round loaf, sliced horizontally, filled with loads of stuff then cut into wedges. It was called the Manwich.

HeronLanyon · 05/08/2021 13:25

anotherhill that made me laugh ! What are we like, eh?

NewlyGranny · 05/08/2021 13:29

Your version only makes sense of someone is observing you from the foot of your bed. I sincerely hope they're not!

I'm team DH, too.

That'd be along the loaf, obviously.Grin
Dinkydody · 05/08/2021 14:12

Sorry, you sleep on the right 😁

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 05/08/2021 14:15

I agree with your DH too

Serenissima21 · 05/08/2021 14:20

I've always found inside/outside lane and lh/rh drive confusing - but your dh is right about the bed!

Givemebackmylilo · 05/08/2021 14:25

You sleep on the right.

Just like viewing a body from the 'foot', it's the opposite way around.

AlmostSummer21 · 05/08/2021 14:29

Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once,..@EmmaGrundyForPM 'You are right'

The side of a bed is determined by standing at the foot of it. Due to the idiots you will encounter through your life (as evidenced above) to save any misunderstandings, it's necessary to state this in any discussion!

(You're wrong about sandwiches though. Two slices of bread make A Sandwich, like A cake. It doesn't matter how many times you cut it, it's still A sandwich, like it's still A cake no matter how many pieces it's cut into)

WhatIsThisPlease · 05/08/2021 14:34

I agree with you OP!! Left and right hand sides are determined when standing at the foot of the bed looking at it (in my world anyway).

If you had a bedside table on each side, you'd describe the one on the left as the one on the left, as you stood looking at the bed. So why would that same side be the right hand side of the bed??? 🤯

I have no problem understanding inside/outside lane (no, DS, it is NOT. "the fast lane") or nearside/offside.

I'm baffled by the bed though

Also, ....
Yeah that’s clearly saying what OP is saying. I would probably say I sleep on the left side (as in that pic) but on the right side of DP when I’m in bed. 😆🤔
HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 05/08/2021 15:11

Whichever arm is at the edge of the mattress when you are laid on your back is the side you are on. So left arm on the edge, left side of the bed. Right arm on the edge, right side of the bed. Sorry but your DH is right.

I'm so shocked at the votes on this one! OP, I'd have said the same to you! You sleep on the left!

Time one.

If you have a meeting next Tuesday and it's changed to next Monday - is it being moving backwards a day, or forwards a day?

I say forwards but I don't know if my brain is weird as I used to work in a company where everyone else would say backwards. Used to drive me spare. Am I the weird o e or them?
