… to ask why Giles Coren hasn’t been cancelled yet?

The vile Dawn Foster tweets ffs. But he seems Teflon coated. He will never be cancelled. Three fucking columns a week … a pissing radio show, albeit on Times Radio, which surely no one listens to. I would love to be proved wrong. Absolutely love to be.

The right to free speech is important. The tweet about Dawn Foster is vile and clearly just the latest in a series of abhorrent things that he has said and written (none of which I was aware of before this thread). But, as long as he isn't inciting hatred against people with protected characteristics or inciting violence , then he has the right to express his disgusting views.

However, he does not have the right to be paid to express his views.

People who are disgusted by him are entitled to decide not to pay for a newspaper which employs him. Commissioning editors (for newspapers or broadcasters) don't have a duty or moral obligation to employ him. They can decide not to commission programmes presented by him or articles written by him if they want. They are legally and morally able to make that decision on ethical grounds because they don't want to be associated with such a pathetic creep or on economic grounds because they fear a loss of viewers or readers. The only occasion when it is wrong to refuse to employ someone for any reason other than the calibre of their work is if that decision is made on the basis of prejudice or fear of antagonising others who are prejudiced.

I replied to the comment

If you don't like Giles Coren, don't read his columns. Simple

Because I don't think it is as simple as that.

fraddu · 24/07/2021 10:38

@cariadlet I agree

Bryonyshcmyony · 24/07/2021 10:38

However, he does not have the right to be paid to express his views

All comment/columnists are paid to express their views.

And his views about DF weren't paid for by anyone.

Housewife2010 · 24/07/2021 10:39

Don't forget either that it was GC's tweet claiming that there had been an affair between Prince William and Rose Hanbury that started all the rumours about the state of William and Kate's marriage.

Gregwiggle · 24/07/2021 10:40

It is perfectly possible to think what he wrote was distasteful and probably influenced by alcohol and not agree with people ganging up on him and picking holes in not only his family but anyone who isn't immediately signalling their hatred.

Agree.

I don't think his wife or children should receive hatred. To me children are off limits but I don't think he subscribes to that view.

Should we get some pitchforks?

There’s a distinct scent of ‘and another thing…’ outrage on this thread.

The tweet this week was shitty and wrong and stupid. It’s sufficient to be outraged by that rather than the other stupid things he’s said

fraddu · 24/07/2021 11:01

I wonder if he will apologise for it

Blossomtoes · 24/07/2021 11:01

So it’s not right to point out he has form going back years? Perhaps it’s indicative that he should have been dealt with long before this.

Bryonyshcmyony · 24/07/2021 11:03

Yes I agree but the nature of cancel culture is that you spend time googling every tiny detail of their life and read all their columns then use them to attack anyone who doesn't immediately agree, like a PP using the "child rape" quote to smear me.

Gregwiggle · 24/07/2021 11:03

I agree. The Prince William tweet is irrelevant.

Also, you may not agree with GC's family receiving 'hatred' but that's often what actually happens when someone is 'cancelled' regardless of who it is, because for every moderate outraged person there is a nasty person who enjoys taking things to the extreme and an excuse for bullying.

Also I have no idea what the comment about children being off limits is because I don't read his tweets or journalism (which actually is really simple).

Piglet89 · 24/07/2021 11:03

@fraddu

He won’t. He’s the kind that subscribes to the edict “Never apologise, never explain”.

Bryonyshcmyony · 24/07/2021 11:04

The comment about his children being off limits is designed both to make the poster look saintly but also to have a not so veiled dig at GC

fraddu · 24/07/2021 11:06

Jesus you have a low bar! Not directing hate at children = saintly? 😆

Blossomtoes · 24/07/2021 11:07

Quite.

Gregwiggle · 24/07/2021 11:07

He should have been dealt with long before this.

What does 'dealt with' mean?

Here we go.
Blossomtoes · 24/07/2021 11:10

@Gregwiggle

He should have been dealt with long before this.

What does 'dealt with' mean?

Fired from the Times, not employed by broadcast media companies.
RedToothBrush · 24/07/2021 11:12

Cancel culture is revolting.

Win your argument by debate rather than trying to destroy people.

fraddu · 24/07/2021 11:14

It's interesting that the only response @Bryonyshcmyony has to my point is to accuse me of having a dig. I'm not wrong though am I as he doesn't subscribe to that view?

I think it would be a good thing if Giles take some of the advice on here and thinks about the impact of his tweets on families & as @Gregwiggle points these people who enjoys taking things to the extreme and an excuse for bullying do exist.

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2021 11:14

Ad homiem attacks are for those who don't wish to talk about subjects over celebrity.

Blossomtoes · 24/07/2021 11:16

Perhaps you should tell Giles that.
fraddu · 24/07/2021 11:16

@Gregwiggle I used to follow him on twitter & sometimes read his reviews but after he directed an extreme amount of hatred at a child via a tweet I went off him.

fraddu · 24/07/2021 11:20

Here we go

Where are you going?

You accused me of trying to make myself look saintly & Im just highlighting that our definition of saintly are different.
