… to ask why Giles Coren hasn’t been cancelled yet?

The vile Dawn Foster tweets ffs. But he seems Teflon coated. He will never be cancelled. Three fucking columns a week … a pissing radio show, albeit on Times Radio, which surely no one listens to. I would love to be proved wrong. Absolutely love to be.

@Orf1abc

This thread is quite an interesting demonstration of how SM "cancellation" happens.

"Cancellation" happens through demand for the person falling. A key feature of a capitalist economy.

No, that isn't what cancellation means.
Bryonyshcmyony · 24/07/2021 09:43

It is a "modern form of ostracism" as Wikipedia handily explains

Blossomtoes · 24/07/2021 09:45

Same thing.

Bryonyshcmyony · 24/07/2021 09:47

Well, it absolutely isn't, but you crack on.

Gregwiggle · 24/07/2021 09:53

Cancellation isn't a natural fall in demand. That's end of pier shows, or big bands. Cancellation is people jumping on a bandwagon (to virtue signal). Often without properly understanding why (e.g. JKR).

If you don't like Giles Coren, don't read his columns. Simple.

MyOtherProfile · 24/07/2021 09:55

So sad to read this. I was at a meeting with DF earlier this year. She was great. GC not so great. Reading this thread has made me see just how low he is.

Blossomtoes · 24/07/2021 09:58

If you don't like Giles Coren, don't read his columns. Simple

Or even better refuse to give your money to a corporation that tacitly endorses his views.

fraddu · 24/07/2021 10:00

If you don't like Giles Coren, don't read his columns. Simple.

But why should you still buy something with his columns in?

MyOtherProfile · 24/07/2021 10:04

Yes it's not enough to just ignore his columns. Not unless you're happy for his influence to continue. I'm not.

Lessthanaballpark · 24/07/2021 10:05

I think the question isn’t “Why hasn’t GC been cancelled?” but “why have others been cancelled for significantly less?”

fraddu · 24/07/2021 10:05

Some of the logic on this thread is odd. If my favourite artist was exposed as a racist which I personally find abhorrent, I am under no moral obligation to keep purchasing that artists music.

Buccanarab · 24/07/2021 10:13

Can't believe we are 26 pages in and people still can't quite grasp the difference between cancel culture and consequences of your actions.

People aren't cancelling their subscription to The Times or calling for GC to be removed from his post because he made an inappropriate comment 10 years ago or said something mildly unPC. No one's jumping on a bandwagon to pull down poor old Giles because he shared a slightly inappropriate thought. They are boycotting him because he has a history doing/saying cuntish things and this time took things way too far.

If you genuinely believe what he said about Dawn Foster is fine and just part of "free speech" then youll have no problem showing your support for GC by sharing his tweets on your own Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn along with the caption "I agree with GC, Dawn Foster will most certainly be on her way to hell HA HA HA HA HA".

Please come back with a screenshot once you've done this and let us know how it went down with your friends/family/work.

LittleBearPad · 24/07/2021 10:17

But why should you still buy something with his columns in?

Because I like reading the Times and I like to be informed. I can’t bear Melanie Phillips but I still subscribe because there are masses of other journalists I do like.

I don’t like the Guardian’s stance on women’s rights. The Mail is trash reading (good for gossip Wink. The Telegraph is batshit. The rest Confused.

Some of Coren’s columns are funny, others less so. The restaurant reviews are often good though a bit formulaic (dim sum restaurants in particular). His leaving Twitter was a good idea a few years ago. He should do the same now.

LittleBearPad · 24/07/2021 10:21

But that’s not thinking free speech is important. You don’t have to agree with him. You can think he’s an utter fucking idiot.

Believing in free speech is believing people have the right to say or write things you find abhorrent. That’s when anyone’s belief in free speech is tested. Not when everyone agrees with you.

fraddu · 24/07/2021 10:23

@LittleBearPad fair enough that's your choice & your right but others are equally entitled to not want to buy it aren't they?

LittleBearPad · 24/07/2021 10:24

Yes of course, not quite sure why you think I’ve implied otherwise.

I was answering a question posed by another poster.

fraddu · 24/07/2021 10:27

?, you replied to my post about why you should you still buy something.

moita · 24/07/2021 10:29

Meeth him years ago. Good looking guy, intelligent. Also unspeakably arrogrant and really has no idea how privileged he is.

He made a comment about how it would be easier if he'd been working class as everyone would call him a brilliant journalist of his own merit. He really doesn't understand that he is successful due to his connections.

He thinks it's all down to his own brilliance.

He seems himself as untouchable. I suppose he is really.

Also meet Victoria and she was on the other hand: affable, warm and very witty. I wrote a review of her husband's show for a university newspaper. She retweeted it and sent me a lovely messge. It was very kind.

LittleBearPad · 24/07/2021 10:31

Yes explaining why I still subscribe. I don’t think anyone gets to dictate what other people choose to do. You evidently think there should be one viewpoint
fraddu · 24/07/2021 10:31

Where have I implied that?

Gregwiggle · 24/07/2021 10:32

But why should you still buy something with his columns in?

I didn't say you had to. I don't susbcribe to the Times and never have because Rupert Murdoch. If I did I would cancel my subscription because he is currently trying to interfere with its editorial independence.

fraddu · 24/07/2021 10:33

I've not said anyone should not buy or support something, just pointed out that if you don't like something you have no obligation or duty to support it.

LittleBearPad · 24/07/2021 10:35

You’re getting yourself on a pickle here aren’t you.

Bryonyshcmyony · 24/07/2021 10:35

It is perfectly possible to think what he wrote was distasteful and probably influenced by alcohol and not agree with people ganging up on him and picking holes in not only his family but anyone who isn't immediately signalling their hatred.

I don't know him and I didn't know (or had ever heard of) Dawn Foster. It seems as if they both had a personal issue with each other which has absolutely nothing to do with me.

tomorrowalready · 24/07/2021 10:35

@moita, "He made a comment about how it would be easier if he'd been working class as everyone would call him a brilliant journalist of his own merit." Now that is really funny almost as good as Dominic Cummings on Boris Johnson.
