Portable neck fans. How did I not know these exist?!?!

I just thought I'd share this for anyone struggling with the hot weather or menopausal hot flushes! 🥵

DH said a guy at work was using one so he bought one for me and it's amazing Grin

I've been wearing it since it arrived this morning and despite looking like a DJ who's forgotten where her ears are, it's made an amazing difference and kept me cool all day.

Anyone else tried them? They're a bit noisy at first but my brain has kind of filtered the noise out in favour of the constant cool air.

We can see this thread is a few years old so some of the suggestions may be out of stock, but we’ve recently updated our best neck fan guide with plenty of Mumsnetter-approved recommendations, all tried and tested by MNHQ. We hope it helps.

Oh FF's why have i never heard of these before?

FizziWater · 18/07/2021 21:42

@housemdwaswrong

Just ordered one each for us here! I take steroids which affects temperature regulation, and this weather is killing me. Thabks for this post. What's the bet they come at 10.00pm tomorrow? :)
I take steroids as well and had no idea that was one of the many side effects. Explains why I drip with sweat at the most inappropriate times. I finished menopause years ago but it feels like it. I ordered these, coming tomorrow. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08ZHLFWW4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8
WorraLiberty · 19/07/2021 12:15

@treesgoping I couldn't wear it in bed as the hard plastic was uncomfortable and the pillow kept blocking the little holes and making a weird noise.

It was nice to grab and put on when I woke up in a puddle of sweat though.

Oh I saw a pair on amazon the other day but I had never heard of them before and thought they seemed too good to be true so didn't order them. I think I will now!

Evenstar · 19/07/2021 12:55

Mine is nearly here according to the tracking, how long does it take to charge? 🥵

Weirdfan · 19/07/2021 13:00

I've been debating ordering one for ages (we're skint so even cheap purchases need to be thought (or over-thought in my case Blush) about) and this may have just convinced me! I'm 46 and really struggling with this heat and then hot flushes on top, I came back from a walk looking like a beetroot yesterday. No fucks given if I look like a twat, doubt I'll ever take it off once I've got one Grin

Forgottenyeti · 19/07/2021 13:07

Mine is coming today too. Can't wait. I'm hoping the battery has charge in it like the handheld one I bought last week does. That one is great but having to hold it up is less great.

I have rosacea and look like a beetroot for a significant amount of the day at the best of times.

TheNameTheWebsiteForgot · 19/07/2021 13:09

Waiting for the amazon man patiently! I shall report back...

RandomHomoSapien · 19/07/2021 13:16

I have ordered one. Don’t care what I look like but not sure I’m brave enough to wear on the train due to the noise 🤔

TheQueef · 19/07/2021 13:17

@Evenstar

Depends. I have two different types, the one with the fans at the end is fastest to charge but only has about six hours at full speed. Both of mine have an led that turns off after charging so I alternate them in this weather. I use those magnetic chargers too, same as phones and other devices here so we don't have yet another charger.

After Worra did her scientific test last night, if anyone is buying a chillow, buy the cheapest+ best review.
Get at least two if not three because you will forget to freeze.
They are flat so can fit in freezer draw under stuff.
I have also used plain old ice packs successfully but they do warm up faster and leave things a touch damp.

Iloveyogurt · 19/07/2021 13:27

Ordered as DH is losing his rag in this heat!

LCDIT · 19/07/2021 13:30

I ordered one that disappeared into the hands of my mum... got three more on the way today. I'm another waiting for Amazon man very patiently!

Weirdfan · 19/07/2021 13:35

Fuck it, I've ordered one, coming tomorrow Grin

Forgottenyeti · 19/07/2021 13:38

I do have a chillow somewhere I think but it gets sooo warm. The first part is nice. I might have binned it in despair 🤔

TheQueef · 19/07/2021 13:43

Chillow (other brands etc it's just a search term really) works best for me if I use it under the pillow and flip for the cold side iykwim so not directly on it.
Mine are just about making it through the night in this heat, still bliss flipping for the cold side ❤
Not as cold or frosty as a frozen hot water bottle, which also works well but is obvs lumpy.

Evenstar · 19/07/2021 14:00

Have put mine on charge 3 hours according to the box 🥵 but I am parked in front of my tower cooling fan for now

WorraLiberty · 19/07/2021 14:21

@Evenstar

Mine came fully charged and lasted about 8 hours.

I think you only have to charge for a few hours the first time the initial charge runs out.

Evenstar · 19/07/2021 16:19

Ooh might go and get it now then, thanks @WorraLiberty

FizziWater · 19/07/2021 16:31

Mine has arrived!
There is an advantage of being old and not caring in the least how I look. I can't see it replacing my fans in the house, especially my bedroom one I posted above, but on the move, yes. I will test it out while gardening and see if I still turn into a drippy mess.
Should I ever venture on an aeroplane again it will be brilliant.

AhNowTed · 19/07/2021 17:15

Mine's arrived, fully charged.

Very pleased 😀

TrickorTreacle · 19/07/2021 17:31

@WorraLiberty

TrickorTreacle they must be running out of stock.

DH ordered mine yesterday evening and it arrived this morning.

Hi Worra.

Just an update that my neck fan arrived today and it's doing me wonders! So while it wasn't the exact same Amazon link as the one you provided, it was your thread that made me aware of these. So many thanks for the thread!

HopeHappy · 19/07/2021 17:36

Excuse my ignorance, but is a chillow effectively the same thing as a dog cooling mat??

If so I may commandeer the pets' one, seeing as the buggers prefer sitting in the heat in their fur coats, rather than even attempting to keep cool.

Last night pre bed I had a cool shower and went to bed with wet hair, a towel on my pillow and a fan blowing a stream of air across my legs - it was lovely! Slept like a dream!

BonnyandPoppy · 19/07/2021 17:39

Mine's arrived today too. It's great! Just looked on Amazon and the price has jumped up since yesterday and lots are out of stock.
