Noisy effing cyclists

We have lived in our village for years. The last couple we seem to have ended up on a very popular route for large groups of cyclists.

I have no problem with cyclists on the road but we live on a corner and a junction and they shout at each other constantly as they cycle past. It's constant all day.

Sometimes just that the junction is clear, sometimes what they are having for dinner or sometimes, like this morning, how much of a bitch his wife was! There have been five groups already this morning since 6am, which has woken the kids (6 and 3). All shouting at each other as they ride past.

I know AIBU to expect anything from people when they are outside my house and on a
public road but it's it unreasonable not to expect people to be quiet outside anyone's house at 6am on a Sunday morning!??

Rant over, made me feel better, thanks.

😡🤬

Definitely not being unreasonable! That is completely unacceptable at 6 am.

girlmom21 · 18/07/2021 07:25

I'd be telling them to have a little courtesy if I heard them shouting at 6am!

NuttyinNotts · 18/07/2021 07:29

Are they noisier than when a tractor or motorbike drives past? It sounds like you must get pretty bad noise from any traffic driving past being so close to the road.

LarsErickssong · 18/07/2021 07:30

God yes we live on the corner at a cross roads with traffic lights on a main road, noise from the road is never an issue but cyclists shouting to each other at 6am in the morning on the weekend is!

StrongTea · 18/07/2021 07:31

We have similar, not as often as you, but on local cycling club training route. Can hear them before you see them.

Shapesorted · 18/07/2021 07:31

Yes we have this too through our village. Someone recently complained on Facebook and all the cyclists were really defensive saying they didn't shout, only if it was to alert of danger so I don't think they have any clue they are doing it.

LarsErickssong · 18/07/2021 07:32

Just to add it doesn't bother me during the day once the traffic has picked up as you can't hear them, it's between 6-9am at weekends when the road is relatively quiet that it's irritating.

Sheldock · 18/07/2021 07:35

If you can find out which club the groups are with, drop their chairman a message. It's not an a image most cycling clubs want to have.

ivykaty44 · 18/07/2021 07:36

I cycle with a friend and chat, we never shout a conversation, just normal talking the same as when walking. The only time we shout is when drivers are around to be heard over the engine.
Just seems strange that these near you are all shouting

AnxiousPixie · 18/07/2021 07:37

That's exactly it @LarsErickssong

@NuttyinNotts completely get your point about motorbikes and tractors. It's the time of day I think that's really riled me this morning. Since 6am we have had 0 tractors, 0 motorbikes, a couple of cars and now 8 groups of cyclists all shouting.

Just got to reconcile or move I guess!

They ABU. Enjoy your cycling by all means, but have some consideration for others, including local residents. We live in the countryside and are really suffering with motorcyclists at the moment. They have always come out to enjoy the roads and scenery - no problem there - but some use it as a race track and - very sadly - as a local, you get to know where the resulting serious and lethal crashes have occurred. At the moment though there is a particular problem with those extremely noisy mufflers/exhausts some of them have - just why are motorbikes allowed to be so loud?! - they really disturb the peace and are attention-seeking, intrusive and anti-social. They come out to enjoy the countryside but spoil it for other people, including residents. Like your pedal cyclists, OP, they ABU too.

Shapesorted · 18/07/2021 07:38

As I said above, I don't think you're aware that your talking voices carry at that time of the morning. All the cyclists swore blind they only chatted at normal levels too.
Xenia · 18/07/2021 07:39

They can be so noisy. On our private road it is illegal to cycle down it although everyone does despite signs - private road (not gates). I saw a van like google streetview but for cycle routes with camera on top (we don't allow google vans down here and other than google earth are therefore not on google streetview). I emailed the company to tell them they must remove the photos and not put this road on their site but no reply.

ivykaty44 · 18/07/2021 07:39

LarsErickssong So the drivers are noisier than the cyclists, you need the drivers to get out earlier at 6am then

AnxiousPixie · 18/07/2021 07:40

Thanks @ivykaty44. The cyclists that come past in ones and twos absolutely aren't a problem. But we have so many groups of 5+ that shout because they can't hear from one end of the group to the other if they just talk I guess.

Still, I'm up now and will just get on with my day. 😊

In my view no one should talk on the road at all - indeed they should npot be on in. Trespassers to a man.... yesterday one was standing right by my gates with his phone having a long ocnversation illegal electric scooter by his side. Even when I was using the hose pipe near him and even when I opened the gates he did not move on.

So I said - Are you looking for a house on the estate. No he said and carried on with his call. I then said - this is a private road and there are signs at every exit..... he then at last left on his illegal electric scooter.

ivykaty44 · 18/07/2021 07:42

Perhaps it’s because it’s so quiet that you think it’s loud, of course in stillness a voice will carry - but that doesn’t mean the person is shouting. In fact itd be hard to shout a conversation

girlmom21 · 18/07/2021 07:43

Surely it's not illegal to cycle or drive down a private road Hmm I thought you just couldn't park down them if you weren't a resident or visiting a resident?

Hellcatspangle · 18/07/2021 07:44

They are selfish fuckwits. As is my next door neighbour who's been out at the crack of dawn every day with his bastard hammer and various other garden tools all week.

The problem is, even if you yell at one group of cyclists you'll get different ones next time. Is there anywhere to put a large sign up with "STFU you noisy twats" on?

ivykaty44 · 18/07/2021 07:46

Of course if you have a crowd of people all talking it will be more noise than two people talking. If you go into a pub and two people are talking it’ll be quieter than the same place with 6 people talking, but that doesn’t mean anyone is shouting

LarsErickssong · 18/07/2021 07:48

@ivykaty44 trust me it's definitely shouting not just talking!

Also I should have clarified that by saying I don't hear them in the day that's just generally because after living here for 30 years I tune the hum of the constant traffic out and I'm busy about the house not just lying in bed trying to sleep, you probably can still hear them over traffic during the day. I'll later out today and report back Grin

I will also add that it's obviously not all cyclists, I'm a road cyclist too but if me and DP go out together I only chat to him when we are two abreast and I can hear him properly.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 18/07/2021 07:48

I have a similar problem with dog walkers on the pathe behind our house. The first ones have just arrived. Not sure why they have to speak so loudly, but they do. Grin

5329871e · 18/07/2021 07:50

It probably not as bad as the motorcyclists that zoom down our road at 1 am.

LarsErickssong · 18/07/2021 07:50

Just as I was writing that last reply I've had
'ARE WE GOING OUT FOR FOOD WHEN WE GET BACK IM FUCKING STARVING'

nellly · 18/07/2021 07:50

@girlmom21 nope there are plenty of private roads that are not a right of access for anyone other than the people who pay in and maintain it, it's specifically set out in their deeds and there's not right to just wander or drive down, people just ignore jt though, especially on bikes!

My dads a cyclist (Mamil) 😞 and they genuinely don't realise how loud their voices carry, I've gone for a ride with him a few times and he would definitely wake people if it was early just doesn't seem to realise his voice is booming out
