Noisy effing cyclists

AnxiousPixie · 18/07/2021 07:15

We have lived in our village for years. The last couple we seem to have ended up on a very popular route for large groups of cyclists.

I have no problem with cyclists on the road but we live on a corner and a junction and they shout at each other constantly as they cycle past. It's constant all day.

Sometimes just that the junction is clear, sometimes what they are having for dinner or sometimes, like this morning, how much of a bitch his wife was! There have been five groups already this morning since 6am, which has woken the kids (6 and 3). All shouting at each other as they ride past.

I know AIBU to expect anything from people when they are outside my house and on a
public road but it's it unreasonable not to expect people to be quiet outside anyone's house at 6am on a Sunday morning!??

Rant over, made me feel better, thanks.

😡🤬

@ivykaty44

Of course if you have a crowd of people all talking it will be more noise than two people talking. If you go into a pub and two people are talking it’ll be quieter than the same place with 6 people talking, but that doesn’t mean anyone is shouting
This is exactly the weird defensive attitude a pp was talking about from cyclists. Why are you trying to gaslight the op? It's her house and she's hearing it. I think she knows if she can hear shouting in her own home.
AlCalavicci · 18/07/2021 09:18

@AnxiousPixie
I know it would be counterproductive but I would love you to set up a hidden speaker and microphone so you could join in the conversation . Grin

Crowsaregreat · 18/07/2021 09:20

Grow a hedge as a sound barrier. Put a sign up saying 'we can hear everything you say.'

I'm on the fence with this - I can see it's annoying but I don't like the idea that the country should always be peaceful and quiet. That's more when people move out from London then complain about tractors and livestock though!

Streamside · 18/07/2021 09:28

I also live on a corner close to the road and have exactly the same issue. We have huge numbers of cyclists passing on Sunday mornings and they really do shout.
The worst thing is when you're in the shower and their shouting comes through the skylight at you. They're rarely in any race type situation but they treat our quite dangerous double s bend corner as some particular challenge even though there's been significant accidents on it.

Nengineer · 18/07/2021 09:29

Stick a broom handle out of your front door

Op can hear the voices, doesn’t mean they are shouting. Sound travels when traffic noise isn’t muffling it out.

AnxiousPixie · 18/07/2021 09:43

Thanks everyone, wasn't expecting to start a bun fight was just so irritated this morning. It's every Sunday. They do def shout, the dog walkers going past aren't anywhere near as loud but they have to shout to get over the noise of their bikes and wind.

I don't have a problem with cyclists, I have a problem with loud unnecessary noise at 6am on a Sunday. It's just unfortunate that here most of that noise is cyclists. They have been endless this morning, I guess trying to get their ride in before it gets too hot. Good for them, but I wouldn't shout outside your house, please don't do it outside mine! I don't think that's unreasonable.
@nellly I think the signposting definitely needs to be clearer on those roads then... I can't imagine anyone except those who've contributed to the road would know this 🙈
Really? The word "private" wouldn't make you assume that is it not a PUBLIC road?

I don't understand your confusion. Not at all!

MurielSpriggs · 18/07/2021 09:56

Private land often has rights of way over it.

Op can hear the voices, doesn’t mean they are shouting. Sound travels when traffic noise isn’t muffling it out.

But the OP says they are shouting.

Like the 2 cyclists I walked by at 6:30 this morning.
Shouting a conversation.
I could hear them before I could even see them.
They may well have thought they were just chatting but they were absolutely shouting.
@ivykaty44 Why are you continuing to argue that you know what the OP heard better than she did?
I agree with @Neondisco that you are coming across as very very defensive

lljkk · 18/07/2021 10:20

club run at 6am? What cycling club has a regular club run that starts at 6am?

Chloemol · 18/07/2021 10:23

I would be waiting next weekend. Then shouting shut up at them as they go past

Can you find out which cycling club they belong to and make a formal complaint

I hate cycling groups, most are ignorant muppets in my opinion

StoneofDestiny · 18/07/2021 10:37

I agree - a big sign up near your property might alert them how anti social their shouting is "cyclists, please don't shout here, be aware residents are sleeping at 6.00 am"

Also - complain to cycle club.
Give lots of adverse publicity on local Facebook sites to their inconsiderate behaviour.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 18/07/2021 10:38

YANBU
Those of us who walk (daily) in our vast local forest would heartily agree with you except we hear it at all times of day, not just early morning. Sometimes my dog is alarmed at the foghorn voices (they are still a minute or two away from us then and still out of sight). Completely ruins my peaceful walks, especially if I am trying to watch shy wildlife nearby. However, 90 percent are goodnatured and polite when passing us so I am appreciative of that (even if they do shout at each other). Many also tell me how many cyclists in their group are behind them so I know when it is safe for me and dog to get back on the tiny footpath.

Picklypickles · 18/07/2021 10:41

We get this all the time in our village now too, I am really starting to hate these lycra-clad fuckwits with a passion. They are so fucking arrogant and self-involved, twice this week I have been walking my 2 young children home from school when groups of these assholes have been riding 3 or 4 abreast up the middle of the fucking road pretending not to notice any of the pedestrians whilst they shout at one another, I'm not sure how they think they are going to manage to bully us off the road in our village as there aren't any pavements. I've taken to just stopping and standing still in the middle of the road so they have no choice but to either move the fuck over or stop or run me and my children over. Absolute fucking wankstains, I hope they all get squashed to death by tractors.

coogee · 18/07/2021 10:56

I agree - a big sign up near your property

mumsiedarlingrevolta

if you say they are shouting, then they're shouting... but as others have said it doesn't happen when the traffic noise starts, as they can't hear it over the noise of the cars engines

Maybeone · 18/07/2021 11:09

Cyclists of the MAMIL I'll are all a bunch of self obsessed tossers

Maybeone · 18/07/2021 11:10

Shapesorted · 18/07/2021 11:13

And because traffic is starting later at a reasonable time. It's also a white noise sound.

This is exactly what I was talking about on Facebook, defensive cyclists who think waking people up with their loud conversations is acceptable.

It doesn't matter how quiet you think you're being, you're too loud!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/07/2021 11:14

@MurielSpriggs

Private land often has rights of way over it.
Which are specifically signposted.

I don't understand what is to be misunderstood about that.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/07/2021 11:16

Is there any way to rig up a motion-sensitive speaker system that shouts back? As in;

YOUR PENIS IS SMALL!
YOUR SHORTS ARE TOO TIGHT!
YOUR CONDOM DOES NOT SUIT YOU!

It sounds awful OP. I feel for you.

spinningspaniels · 18/07/2021 11:20

We're also plagued by them, as the village is on a national cycle route.

I do get cross when I'm walking the dogs though as they often appear round bends at speed and I've had a few attempts at hedge diving. I think my language was more colourful than theirs on that occasion....

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 18/07/2021 11:25

Didn't realise there was so much anti cyclist feeling Shock
I'll swap you OP for the motorbikes near my house.
