Noisy effing cyclists

AnxiousPixie · 18/07/2021 07:15

We have lived in our village for years. The last couple we seem to have ended up on a very popular route for large groups of cyclists.

I have no problem with cyclists on the road but we live on a corner and a junction and they shout at each other constantly as they cycle past. It's constant all day.

Sometimes just that the junction is clear, sometimes what they are having for dinner or sometimes, like this morning, how much of a bitch his wife was! There have been five groups already this morning since 6am, which has woken the kids (6 and 3). All shouting at each other as they ride past.

I know AIBU to expect anything from people when they are outside my house and on a
public road but it's it unreasonable not to expect people to be quiet outside anyone's house at 6am on a Sunday morning!??

Rant over, made me feel better, thanks.

😡🤬

Cyclists in general are selfish gits anyway.

ivykaty44 · 18/07/2021 07:51

I live on a straight road in suburbs and back onto a school

I love the noise of the children from the school playground and hate the drivers racing up the street

BusyLizzie61 · 18/07/2021 07:52

@AnxiousPixie

Thanks *@ivykaty44*. The cyclists that come past in ones and twos absolutely aren't a problem. But we have so many groups of 5+ that shout because they can't hear from one end of the group to the other if they just talk I guess.

Still, I'm up now and will just get on with my day. 😊

Where we are, neighbours built scarecrows that have signs on, saying to be courteous and basically shut up!
girlmom21 · 18/07/2021 07:53

@nellly I think the signposting definitely needs to be clearer on those roads then... I can't imagine anyone except those who've contributed to the road would know this 🙈

Shapesorted · 18/07/2021 07:56

The children playing in the playground is during the day when presumably you are awake. I doubt you'd be that delighted if they woke you every Saturday and Sunday morning at 6am.Grin

ivykaty44 · 18/07/2021 07:56

I can't imagine anyone except those who've contributed to the road would know this 🙈

You can’t argue with stupid….

ivykaty44 · 18/07/2021 07:57

Shapesorted The road outside my house is open 24/7

Summerbreeze4 · 18/07/2021 08:00

Put a large poster up in your window on Sundays asking cyclists for peace and quiet and it is your lie in day.

ThinWomansBrain · 18/07/2021 08:01

live by a junction with traffic lights - there's a small public garden in the middle {great for people to drunk people to sit and shout at each other after the pub closes - a pub that didn't exist when I bought here) so the actual junction is about 50m away.
Pet hate is when cars stop at the traffic lights with the radio so loud, that it's not the noise of the radio, it's the vibrations that hit the building. A building with metre thick walls.
People shouting at each other - which happens through the night - pales in significance.

EastWestWhosBest · 18/07/2021 08:05

I think the sound of voices is more disturbing than the same volume of a car/van/tractor at similar volume. A vehicle has a constant noise where voices are up and down.

Also, although I know people will swear up and down that they are just chatting, it’s not the same as if two people were sat in the living room talking.

They might not be shouting but they will be talking more loudly than if they were all just sat next to each other.

picklemewalnuts · 18/07/2021 08:09

The bloke chatting to his friend as he walked past my house at 6am this morning May as well have been in my bedroom. Indeed, I thought he was and woke in a panic.

The defensive people have clearly never thought about the noise they make at the crack of dawn. Or what the word 'private' means.

newnortherner111 · 18/07/2021 08:11

Noise about directions or to warn someone of say a pothole, but not the noise you seem to describe. Probably cycling earlier today because of the temperatures or to be back in time to watch the last stage of the Tour de France.

ivykaty44 · 18/07/2021 08:27

Or what the word 'private' means.

This is the meaning in the dictionary

belonging to or for the use of one particular person or group of people only.

Which is it a private road or a public highway outside your house?

LadyCatStark · 18/07/2021 08:46

YANBU but cyclists on here will defend themselves and each other to the death and find a away room blame drivers even if the cyclist is clearly being unreasonable 🙄.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 18/07/2021 08:47

I know the government is banning public protests, but even they aren’t considering a curfew on people talking in the street.

I live on a busy main road, near a cheap pub, on an ambulance route and sometimes I’ve been woken by the milkman talking to his mate at 3:30 am - the sound of speech is particularly disturbing but you get over it.

Living in a village doesn’t mean anyone owes you extra consideration.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 18/07/2021 08:49

I’d recommend ‘Access for residents only’ signs on the private road, if that is what it is.

PheasantsNest · 18/07/2021 08:52

You have my sympathy. We had a velo ride in our city for one day. The route was past my house. The noise was horrendous. They shout and scream at each other. We live on a main road so are used to noise but this was something far worse.

Bigpinkslippers · 18/07/2021 08:54

I don't think cyclist groups realise how loud they are. I've been reading in bed this morning and had various groups going past, walking, with kids, dogs, horses. Yes I can hear them all but the cyclists are by far the loudest.

Lincslady53 · 18/07/2021 08:55

I go for a walk most mornings in the quiet lanes where we live. I have earpods in listening to music or podcasts. In a 3 mile stretch of lane, there is rarely more than 2 or 3 cars come up behind me, and I usually don't hear them until they are close to me. Cyclists I hear way back. They think they are just talking to each other but they are shouting. Annoying, lycra clad, self important twats.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 18/07/2021 08:58

Not sure what happened recently, but cyclists started behaving absolutely appallingly.

Maybe the lockdown, because now is more of them and once they are in a pack it gets worse.

It is a growing problem.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 18/07/2021 08:59

@AnxiousPixie funny you should post this-I was out walking dog at 6:30 this morning and 2 cyclists went by-a road with lots of terraced houses and they were "talking" I bet they thought normally-but I could hear them before I could even see them.
Anyone with an open window would have heard/been disturbed.
Unbelievably thoughtless.
They were so so loud-shouting across at each other and I wanted to shout "be quiet" but realised that would be counterproductive!!

coogee · 18/07/2021 09:00

Just as I was writing that last reply I've had
'ARE WE GOING OUT FOR FOOD WHEN WE GET BACK IM FUCKING STARVING'

I don’t mind the shouting at each other so much, but this does annoy me. When he hears it, my husband bawls at them to mind their language.

Macncheeseballs · 18/07/2021 09:04

Dogs barking, engines revving, mopeds zooming, car radios blaring, dog walkers chatting, drunks cavorting, these are just some of the things that wake me up or keep me awake, anyone who thinks it's OK to make noise near someone else's house at an ungodly hour is a selfish git, not sure it's just your cyclists

Neondisco · 18/07/2021 09:11

Do you have a village council or committee of any sort? Could you organise some signs about noise? I'm thinking like the watch your speed signs. But asking to keep noise down?

dworky · 18/07/2021 09:15

Yes, I much prefer the sound of car & motorbike engines along with their child-killing toxic fumes.
Bloody cyclists should be banned!
