The Italian Captain is a bully!

The Italian Football Captain is a horrible bully.

He should have got a red card for the way he treated Saka pulling his shirt collar and dragging him to the floor.

Also when Italy were against Spain the way he grabbed the Spanish captain persuading him to do penalties on the Italian side.

I can’t stand him. He deserves no praise and his team played dirty!

I don't begrudge them their victory but I do agree they played MUCH dirtier than the England team in the final.

And you're not biased of course! Not a peep on Kane's foul, which is the only one that resulted in an injury, or the various dives in the previous games, not to mention the made up penalty! But that's different because it's England, right?

No you've honestly got the wrong person. I don't give a toss about football, at all, I've never got into national pride. I didn't see any matches other than the final. I saw a couple of dodgy things from the England team but much more from the Italy team. It's not as though that opinion wasn't reflected by the amount of yellow cards they got.

Blessex · 14/07/2021 11:26

@aSofaNearYou and the made up danish free kick. You win some and you lose some. That’s football.

Blessex · 14/07/2021 11:26

That was for @ElliottSmithsfingers

AryaStarkWolf · 14/07/2021 11:29

YANBU. They only won because they cheated 🤷‍♀️
Same could be said of England in the Denmark game 🤷‍♀️
Blessex · 14/07/2021 11:30

@AryaStarkWolf yes but the penalty went to VAR and stuck. What about the Danish free kick?

Ok? I'm not arguing with that. I'm literally just saying that I agree Italy played much rougher in the final.

SpaceshiptoMars · 14/07/2021 11:36

I've been thinking about why this incident with Saka pushed the racist button.

The first tug on Saka's collar, not such an issue, but cynical. Continuing on and dragging him to the ground - playing to the gallery. Chiellini is a captain and he's been around the block many, many times. He deals with the media constantly. He knew when he kept on dragging that that would be a front page photo. He knew how it would stoke social media. The media are awful, but he was playing to this.

In which case the yellow card for Chiellini was also ok? That's the thing, you cannot undo games for (perceived) decisions that went against you. How far back do you go?

Also to Sofa - it's not "dodgy" play, if covered by the rules of the game (like yellow cards are)?

I honestly don't give a shit either way, although it may not look like it, but the petition/endless whingeing, from people who are clueless about football, is beyond irritating. I am cringing so hard on their behalf! I know very little about most other sports and would think twice before posting strong opinions (a pearl was the poster saying they were worried about Chiellini's wife) about them, when they would be completely made up.

I really don't understand why you are picking that opinion apart so much. Actions issued a yellow card surely ARE dodgy, as in, you shouldn't do that so here's a warning so you don't do it again. I'm not saying in any way that because they played rough they should forfeit their victory. I'm simply agreeing that they did play comparably rough in that match.

VAR was wrong too imo, either way I'm just saying, that comment about Italy only won because they cheated is fucking stupid

@iklboo

I would have loved to see the likes of Roy Keane be told football is a non-contact sport

Not to mention 'Dirty' Jackie Charlton. 😄

Or Biteyerleg Hunter!

I honestly don’t think so. I think he just saw Saka could get clear and grabbed him hard to make sure he stopped him. I really don’t think there was a thought process of I would grab more gently for a white player or what it would look like in the press. It was over in a second or two.

Chiellini is a dirty player as I think he would probably (proudly) admit but I am very hesitant to call him racist without more tangible reason to.

JudgeJ · 14/07/2021 11:57

@Abhannmor

Yeah 1966 - did England's 3rd goal really cross the line? I'll just get me coat then...
It's been conclusively 'proven' using modern technology that it (a) did not cross the line and that it (b) did cross the line! The England disallowed goal in 2016 aganst Germany was clearly over the line just looking at the normal TV!
DamsonJammyBastard · 14/07/2021 11:57

@JohnStonesMissus

John Terry also gives me that vibe, but my friend thinks he's lush!Confusedwhatever floats your boat I suppose..
John Terry creeps me out too, but I think it's because we know what his character is like.

I think you are reading far more into that challenge than was there.

It was a tactical foul. Nothing more. Nothing less. In the few seconds of play where the challenge happened, he just would not have had time to have that thought process. Do you honestly think he cared in that moment how it would play out in the media? Or was his thought process more in how to stop the ball going forward?

newnortherner111 · 14/07/2021 12:14

If he is, at least it may be only on the football field.

As opposed to the England captain arrested two years ago whilst on holiday in Greece, who said 'do you know who I am' to try to get different treatment?

As opposed to the Welsh team manager, currently relieved of his duties whilst awaiting trial, a man who tried to silence someone he was having an affair with by using legal means (bullying in my view)?

Get over it. The England men's team reached their first final in 55 years, a great achievement.

He's 36. He's the Captain. He wouldn't have the job if he was Mr Impulse Driven. And nobody could ever accuse him of being naive.

@Cooldryplace

How can someone give off a vibe based on anything other than appearance, when you've never even heard them speak?
Not relevant to the thread, exactly - but Trump gave me chills/bad vibes, just by looking at him.

I do wonder whether this is a throw back to ancient times, when people had to make quick decisions about whether something or someone was a threat to them, and judging purely on what you saw was part of that.

OhRosalind · 14/07/2021 12:56

Poor sporting England, robbed again by those dirty cheating foreigners and their weird, creepy, strange, likely domestic abuser captain, not to mention the referee who had the nerve to sanction him in accordance with the rules of the game and not make them up on the spot! How dare Chiellini not baby a 19-year old fellow professional! How dare he try to use psychology to boost his team and psych out the other captains! He’s clearly a racist who choreographs his fouls with the purpose of encouraging racist memes and press images, not, oh I don’t know, stop England from scoring and winning the match. Never mind that Chiellini has actually spoken out in support of Black Lives Matter and against racist Juve fans, and it’s the media and “fans” creating those images and memes, it’s definitely all part of this bullying evil genius’ master plan…

melj1213 · 14/07/2021 13:08

I don't know I just do, the way he was with the Spanish Captain was strange which didn't help..

I don't understand what was "strange" about his exchange with Alba?

I'm a Spain fan (I lived there, my DD was born there and I love watching the team play) so I am definitely not biased towards Chiellini but I don't see the issue with it. I was annoyed that Alba let Chiellini get into his head because that was pure gamesmanship from Chiellini but that is the job of an experienced captain - try and unsettle the other team while not letting them get into your head.

If that was him against Casillas or Ramos then he wouldn't have done that mostly because they would not have argued like a petulant child about winning or losing the coin toss and so he wouldn't have been "jollying them along" while they sulked, which is what Chiellini was doing. Alba allowed him to get into his head and Chiellini used it to his advantage.

Chiellini is an experienced captain, he knows when and where to try and psych out his opposite number for an advantage and in a penalty shootout, which is all about who can hold their nerve, having the psychological advantage definitely helps. Alba let Chiellini get under his skin - he was squabbling over the coin toss and sulking when Chiellini (backed by the ref and the outcome of the coin toss) got his own way which gave Chielini the opportunity to use his boisterous enthusiasm (buoyed by the win over the penalty arrangements) to further unsettle Alba.

That darn Chiellini !!

@ICECream821 you're being an extremely sore loser. What Chiellini did was disgraceful, but I wouldn't go as far as to call him a bully. He performed a sly manoeuvre to help his team. England may not have been in the final if Sterling hadn't done similar and dived for his penalty. And what about the foul against Chiesa? He wasn't even awarded a free kick and had to end the game prematurely. It goes two ways. Football is just one of those games. As much as would be a utopian dream to see players play clean and not foul, I don't see that happening. Even the best players have performed the worst moves.. Ronaldo in his youth could have been an Olympic diver ! Grin

Chiellini was man of the match in my opinion and I think he's a brilliant (kinda whacky) guy. Southgate messed up majorly with who he assigned to take penalties and when he placed them (Saka to take 5th and the most pressuring penalty ?? What was he thinking?). England should also have tried for a second goal, they came out the worse team in the second half.
