The Italian Captain is a bully!

The Italian Football Captain is a horrible bully.

He should have got a red card for the way he treated Saka pulling his shirt collar and dragging him to the floor.

Also when Italy were against Spain the way he grabbed the Spanish captain persuading him to do penalties on the Italian side.

I can’t stand him. He deserves no praise and his team played dirty!

YANBU at all, should have been a red card. What sort of 36 year old man pulls a 19 year old lad over by ragging his collar? That isn’t a tackle, it’s fucking assault.

ChocBeforeCock · 13/07/2021 22:09

@Frezia

Funnily enough the only player who had to be taken off injured after contact with the opposition (English) players was Chiesa on the Italian side. But sure Italians were assaulting players all night long Hmm butchering them as some here would have you believe.

You're just embarrassing yourselves and very badly.

The extent of the injury doesn’t determine how bad the tackle was though. I don’t think many would disagree the most dangerous foul in that game was Jorginho on Grealish.

Italy are a physical team. I don’t think they would deny that. They’re allowed to be physical and I’m not calling them cheats or whatever because I think that’s a silly thing to say about football in all except extreme circumstances, but let’s not pretend that’s not their style of play.

Age is irrelevant in this scenario. They are both players on the pitch. Age doesn't come into it.
tigger1001 · 13/07/2021 22:13

@JulesRimetStillGleaming

Basically what happened was a shirt pull which happens multiple multiple multiple times in every game. Usually they get away with it. Usually they grab the shirt quite near the bottom. This time Chiellini grabbed at Saka and managed to get his hand in his collar. That's why it looked awful. It was awful. But a shirt pull isn't a red card offence. Unless it was a last defender situation with someone through on goal. But it wasn't.
This!!!
melj1213 · 13/07/2021 22:14

And yet nobody has provided video of any other player being dragged by the throat backwards to the ground. So clearly not a standard move.

He wasn't dragged by the throat Hmm he was pulled down by the neck of his shirt ... there's a huge difference.

As for other players being dragged down by the back of their shirt he is not the first and won't be the last

Why should it have been a red card? Under the rules of the game it was a yellow card offence.

Why does age come into it? Would it have been OK for Donnarumma (22) or Chiesa (23) to have committed the foul? What about Veratti (28) or Jorginho (29)? Or would it have been OK if Chiellini had done it to Jordan Henderson (31) or Harry Kane (28)?

Chiellini himself has been meme'd from when he was bitten by Suarez
off topic but he has bitten more then once?! Wow

SallySycamore · 13/07/2021 22:21

Zidane's headbutt was turned into a song, never mind a meme!

3 times I think - Chiellini, Ivanovic and someone else when he was playing in Holland but not sure who that victim was.

Can you explain which rule makes it a red card?

Rightly or wrong wrong not how it works though. In the penalty box..if was the last man/goal scoring opportunity yes could've been a red card. Way it happened however not seen as a red card offense.

Soz guys it’s been one of those days! And I can’t respond to all of you!

But I certainly felt uneasy with the way he did it - as a white man to a young black man. He knew what he was doing - he’s aggressive - he’s not a good sport. I would worry being his partner.

It wasn’t fun what he did to the Spanish captain either - he’s manipulative and aggressive
@Cooldryplace
Yes, that Elizabeth Lambert is a disgrace, but I do see a difference - her hair pull is swift, sharp and clinical - not a drawn out performance designed to humiliate. Did nobody here do any history? People in chain gangs being dragged by neck collars?
Did you actually see it in real time or just memes? It was not drawn out, and suggesting it was designed to humiliate is bizarre, in the context of play it was clearly a cynical foul (not unusual, and punished with a yellow card) designed to stop Saka from creating/scoring a goal.

What is offensive (and what this embarrassing discussion/petition focusing on Chiellini distracts from) are the racist memes, dog-whistling by the media (including in image selection) and the horrific behaviour from people that purport to be fans of this young man’s own team. Those aren’t Chiellini’s responsibility.

Cooldryplace · 13/07/2021 22:30

I do agree that of all the images the game, that's not the one that should have highest profile in the press. Whether it did because of racism or becuase the press/public like a bit of gratuitous violence, is another thing.

SallySycamore · 13/07/2021 22:32

Can you explain which rule makes it a red card?

When it happened I thought it might be serious foul play — I thought it looked excessive force personally (although its hard to say when they're both strong and running very fast!). Fortunately Saka was fine, but that sort of straight backwards fall is quite dangerous.

Yellow was probably the right call, but I wouldn't have been overly surprised or thought it was wrong if he'd given a red.

I'll re-watch it now and see if I still think the same.

SpaceshiptoMars · 13/07/2021 22:34

Did you actually see it in real time or just memes?

Yes, I saw it in real time and it was totally unnecessary to keep on pulling and pulling until he hit the ground. No wonder his wiki page got edited to highlight his strangulation fetish!

Frezia · 13/07/2021 22:35

I don't disagree about the relationship between tackles and injuries. Just putting it in context with the extremely over the top language used by posters to describe fairly standard occurrences in a game of football, who are clearly convinced English players were so much as assaulted for nefarious reasons.

A final is normally going to be more gritty and physical than usual because teams go for all or nothing. That kind of shirt pulling is a yellow card type of offence which is exactly what he got, justice has been served. As an experienced defender Chiellini was surely aware he would get a yellow but took that chance to prevent a possible goal scoring situation. That's all.

I'm convinced at least some of these posters must be trolls. Comparing football tackles and fouls to chain gangs and knocking down dogs and horses in the street, it has to be trolling.

Yup, 3 times - in the 2014 FIFA World Cup he bit Chiellini and was suspended for 4 months; While playing for Liverpool, he bit Ivanović and was banned for 10 games and while playing for Ajax he bit Bakkal and was suspended for 8 games.

Can I just be very clear here that you are suggesting that because Chiellini made a tactical foul (one which is committed day in day out during the domestic season) you are making assumptions that not only was it a racist action but he is also potentially abusive to partners ...

I don't even know where to start with that

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 13/07/2021 22:39

Ivanovic was the one I knew..thought was a one off! How bizzare.

SallySycamore · 13/07/2021 22:45

I've watched again — I still think it was borderline.

After Chiellini grabbed him there was a clear handball (although granted maybe not obvious to C) and Saka had obviously lost control of the ball. S was unbalanced but it still looked like it took a second hard pull to floor him.

The picture is what I think is dangerous — that's a perfect way to badly break your wrist or arm.

Most footballers know how to break their fall safely without breaking wrists or arms ... I think I've seen more players with broken legs/torn ACLs from fouls than broken arms/wrists.

SallySycamore · 13/07/2021 22:54

You're right, that's vastly more common from 'normal' tackle fouls — I've heard that horrible crack when you know it's definitely the shin pad and quite possibly the shin a couple of times unfortunately.

But I think it's also quite uncommon for players to go over straight backwards like Saka did there. It was the type of fall that made it riskier in my opinion. He was fine, so all's well that ends well, I still think it was quite a dangerous way to pull somebody to fall.

HK92 · 13/07/2021 22:57

@TheWhalrus

In football the refs don't give out cards for fouls just because they look bad/offensive....he knows the rules and decided to take the hit as there wasn't a huge amount of cover behind him. A 'tactical' foul is a yellow card unless you're the last player between the attacked and the goal. Saka knew this too.

Some would call it dirty, others would say cynical or even smart. Where you have certain rules, people will always try and exploit them. Jorghino's foul on Grealish a few mins later was probably closer to a red card as it looked a bit like a 2-footer from one angle.

This!!!

It's not a red card! It was on the halfway line and it would only be a red if Saka was the last man. Harry maguire would have done the exact same thing!

Players fall back like that all the time - going for a header and miscalculated the height/angle or in the penalty area when a corner comes in etc - it's not uncommon at all
