AIBU to ask Mumsnet to reconsider a decision

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/07/2021 15:46

… to relegate certain threads from the AIBU board.

I imagine AIBU is probably the most active board on Mumsnet and therefore reaches the highest audience. Now when someone creates a thread about children’s boundaries being crossed by certain people and women being scared into silence and being attacked by certain groups, the thread quickly disappears out of AIBU and onto another board.

Once off AIBU, the thread receives far less exposure thus radically reduces the possibility to offer information to the widest possible audience. Information, which could be used to help people and particularly women make safety and / or safeguarding decisions about themselves and their children.

Mumsnet to me is like the BBC (in its hey day) of parenting sites. And as Mumsnet is renowned for being such an esteemed hub for information, AIBU to ask Mumsnet to not give in to outside pressure from certain groups and to stop relegating important informational threads without looking at the wider implications.

It's simple OP, certain elements don't want what happened at the LA Spa to be seen by a wider audience due to the attention it will garner. Hide it away otherwise the it never happens claims fall apart.

Smallbutnottinykitten · 05/07/2021 16:17

I think although I could be wrong, that threads are moved if they are reported?

I am utterly fed up with corona threads and if I could figure out how to hide the board I would 😂😂😳

BanditoShipman · 05/07/2021 16:18

I think it is important the threads are left in AIBU so that a wider audience can see them. Many ‘ordinary’ women may not know what is happening without clicking on an interesting thread (which they may not do if in ‘gender/sex/something or other’ topic).

It is important people are aware of what’s happening and can then make up their own minds

tallduckandhandsome · 05/07/2021 16:22

YANBU. What happens if you put an AIBU at the end? Does it still get moved to FWR?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 05/07/2021 16:23

So, to test, I reported one of the corona threads. Got this reply.

Hi EndoplasmicReticulum, and thanks for the report.
It looks like the OP would benefit from the thread being an AIBU so we'll let it stand for now.
Best,
MNHQ

Funny, that.

CardinalLolzy · 05/07/2021 16:23

Thing is it is an issue where posters might want to gauge the general opinion - hence posting on AIBU.

If everyone but me thought that it was fine for a male-bodied person to do what they did (don't want to do a TAAT) I'd probably accept that I had a weird problem/fear.

I think MNHQ really need to publish rules on what will be moved without notice and why.

AIBU has millions of threads that could feasibly belong somewhere else.

WorraLiberty · 05/07/2021 16:24

But a lot of people got pig sick of it and asked MNHQ for a topic.

At one time, it seemed like trans issues were the subject of almost every thread.

The same old arguments. An echo chamber on 'one side' and what looked like a few lone voices on the other 'side', being constantly shouted down.

CardinalLolzy · 05/07/2021 16:24

And yeah I'm sick to the back teeth of all the horrible Covid thread in AIBU. Never reported one though as I think it's patronising to the OP to think you know better than them where they intended to post, unless it's something really niche and they didn't realise there was a specific board. (Legal etc)

Maggiesfarm · 05/07/2021 16:29

I always look on 'Last Day' or "threads I'm on', so see posts from all boards.

Not sure that what I just said is helpful but I know what I mean....

toastofthetown · 05/07/2021 16:30

Didn’t we have pretty much this exact thread a month ago?

CardinalLolzy · 05/07/2021 16:33

Just had a quick look at AIBU and most of the most recent threads mention someone's sex and/or gender.

Landlockedgirl · 05/07/2021 16:34

I’m not an active user of MN and cannot get my head around why certain posts are removed from AIBU. I glance at AIBU and choose, from the headings, which ones interest me. Many don’t so I scroll by. I’m sure most people do the same, we’re all adults. With respect to the topic that was moved it is imho a significant issue of interest to all mothers (unexpected exposure of male genitalia in an environment where children are known to be present as well as extremely disturbing scenes of violence towards women) and therefore hearing the opinions of the widest possible MN audience seems important.

DeathByWalkies · 05/07/2021 16:34

@riotlady

YABU, I’m sick to the back teeth of having a minority of mumsnetters make everything about trans issues. You’ve got a whole board for it, go and post it all there to your hearts content
This. I'm SO FUCKING BORED of all claptrap talked about trans people on these boards. I'm only too happy to see it relegated to its own little echo chamber.
CardinalLolzy · 05/07/2021 16:40

Just to be clear: You think that people shouldn't be discussed on mainstream boards if they have a gender identity that is different from their sex?

CardinalLolzy · 05/07/2021 16:41

"Claptrap" - this is people's identities we're talking about. Some people spend their whole lives questioning it and it's discarded as claptrap that shouldn't be discussed where naice people might read it.

ffs.

AlternativePerspective · 05/07/2021 16:42

This. I have the feminism boards hidden for good reason. Am sick of the transphobia constantly demonstrated by some, go and take your bigotry where the rest of us don’t have to see it.

I also have the COVID topic hidden, and I reported a thread only this morning and it was moved there.

“The wider audience needs to see it” is just an excuse to foist your unpleasant views on to the masses under the banner of “people should know.” We’re all educated people, perfectly capable of reading the news etc without having to come on to mn to be educated.

AlternativePerspective · 05/07/2021 16:43

Oh and, if you wanted MN HQ to see this thread you should have posted it in site stuff.

CardinalLolzy · 05/07/2021 16:44

Did you think we already knew this or not?

ErrolTheDragon · 05/07/2021 16:45

@AlternativePerspective

Oh and, if you wanted MN HQ to see this thread you should have posted it in site stuff.
Or report your own OP.
MindyStClaire · 05/07/2021 16:46

@Bunnyfuller

Oh god, again. Have your trans echo chamber anywhere but AIBU, there’s some good threads there without the same trans diatribe.

Lots of us don’t share the vehement cannot be female horror, and get tired of it. There was a couple of weeks where AIBU was littered with it (obviously some pm arranged protest - ‘let’s all bomb AIBU’).

This is a TAAT, please delete

Exactly.

Trans threads on AIBU are never asking AIBU, so why would they be in that topic.

DeathByWalkies · 05/07/2021 16:47

@CardinalLolzy

"Claptrap" - this is people's identities we're talking about. Some people spend their whole lives questioning it and it's discarded as claptrap that shouldn't be discussed where naice people might read it.

ffs.

To be clear, I'm fed up with the widespread transphobia that pervades MN, and regard the view some have of trans people being inherently harmful to women as being claptrap.

I've never knowingly misgendered someone, and find the people that keep referring to transwomen as men to be acting awfully.

AlternativePerspective · 05/07/2021 16:47

Did you think we already knew this or not? Clearly not if you think that a thread needs to be posted on the main boards to make people aware.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 05/07/2021 16:48

I think part of the problem is that this board is the only one with the voting facility.

So if you want a poll, you've got to put it here.

However, if people report it, it gets moved, and you lose the poll.

Perhaps - if a thread with a poll got moved from AIBU but could keep its poll, that might help?

AlternativePerspective · 05/07/2021 16:50

Perhaps - if a thread with a poll got moved from AIBU but could keep its poll, that might help? would it though? If you post a transphobic thread on AIBU you will get a balanced view, move it to feminism where it belongs and people will continue to vote in favour because most people on those boards think the same way.

CardinalLolzy · 05/07/2021 16:50

To be clear, I'm fed up with the widespread transphobia that pervades MN, and regard the view some have of trans people being inherently harmful to women as being claptrap.

No-one thinks that someone's trans status has anything to do with how harmful someone is to women. I assume you are deliberately misrepresenting views here, I don't know why.
