To be pathetically relieved regarding this name?

First off, obvious name change.

I'm fully aware that this is an utterly ridiculous thing to have emotions about, but I did and do. I'm quite cringey that I care so much, but shrug, it's me.

The details:

DD1 is 23, in a long term relationship with a lovely man from university, and they're talking of the future.

One is babies.

They've picked their first child's name. And told me. I'm, ahem, not a fan underfuckingstatement.

Unusually for me, I remained wise and just glossed over the matter and deflected the conversation [straight outta toddler years] so as not to hurt their feelings.

Now I'm wise enough to know that it's nothing to do with me, and whatever the name is, put that newborn into my arms I will be 100% head over heels and be proud to introduce my grandchild to the world.

But this has been causing me angst. I cannot believe they'd settle on this name, when there's so many others out there.

The name is from a TV show they love, it's quite niche, but if you know, you know,!and, I think, is ugly on its own. But boyfriend's surname is very very close to character's surname, so it's pretty fricken obvious it's a nod the this character 😭.

However, it could be years (if at all) till this naming is pertinent, and many things could change in that time. But, I'm a certain sort, and I dwell on things 🙄.

HOWEVER, boyfriend's brother has just had a puppy and used this name 🎉🎉🎉. thank feck

She's quite upset that it's been "stolen" from her.

I've soothed etc, but by gosh I feel so happy that I haven't got to introduce baby Speculum to the U3A. 😂

So: AIBU to feel relieved?

PS the name was deemed to be unisex it's not. So that wouldn't have been a swerve.

PPS, I'm not revealing the name. You'll have to be happy with Speculum. Okay, vipers?

Couldn't they have chosen more common names? Maybe something like Terence or Philip - or both, if they ever have twins?

Vikingintraining · 01/07/2021 00:59

Is the drip feed that you bought the puppy for the boyfriend's brother and pre-named it?

lolacola77 · 01/07/2021 01:00

I'm roaring at Hannibal Letter 😂

@doyouneedtowean

I reckon the name is Khaleesi Grin

But yeah, YABU.

The characters name isn’t Khaleesi. One of my big annoyances is people who think that’s her name. If you’re going to give your kid a terrible name, Daenerys is what you want Grin

@Ineedaneurologist I know Grin I’m a massive ASOIAF fan so I’m with you there, but people seemed to cling onto Khaleesi as though it was a name Confused

Do they though? Isn’t it just that - although it’s a title, not a name - it sounds nice? I plan on naming my next dog that if it’s female and light-haired! People are calling their (hopefully) DDs this as it sounds nice, whereas Daenerys is a little chewier.

People also name their children Princess, Earl, Prince etc. And I knew a dog called Duke!

I think with these sorts of funny name posts it’s vital the OP states the name in the first post. Otherwise it’s like a parking one without a diagram

DoTheNextRightThing · 01/07/2021 09:49

Kenny McCormack 😂 "you bastards!" Tbh I don’t think most people would have noticed. But that is funny.

Shame about the name being taken from her if that's what she had her heart set on.

I was fully expecting a Game of Thrones name like PP 😂

ACPC · 01/07/2021 10:37

Sooty? Obviously not Sweep as that would be ridiculous.

ACPC · 01/07/2021 10:39

Oops missed the update! Kenny is great!

To reassure you post uni I was determined to call my children certain names Sapphire (nearly but along thise lines) as one. I was quite the hippy. My boyfriend at the time took the piss out of such hippy shite. Years later, with different people.

Guess which one used Sapphire? I love taking the piss of how I messed with his brain (actually his wife chose it he claims).

She's likely to find other contenders along the way!
