To be pathetically relieved regarding this name?

First off, obvious name change.

I'm fully aware that this is an utterly ridiculous thing to have emotions about, but I did and do. I'm quite cringey that I care so much, but shrug, it's me.

The details:

DD1 is 23, in a long term relationship with a lovely man from university, and they're talking of the future.

One is babies.

They've picked their first child's name. And told me. I'm, ahem, not a fan underfuckingstatement.

Unusually for me, I remained wise and just glossed over the matter and deflected the conversation [straight outta toddler years] so as not to hurt their feelings.

Now I'm wise enough to know that it's nothing to do with me, and whatever the name is, put that newborn into my arms I will be 100% head over heels and be proud to introduce my grandchild to the world.

But this has been causing me angst. I cannot believe they'd settle on this name, when there's so many others out there.

The name is from a TV show they love, it's quite niche, but if you know, you know,!and, I think, is ugly on its own. But boyfriend's surname is very very close to character's surname, so it's pretty fricken obvious it's a nod the this character 😭.

However, it could be years (if at all) till this naming is pertinent, and many things could change in that time. But, I'm a certain sort, and I dwell on things 🙄.

HOWEVER, boyfriend's brother has just had a puppy and used this name 🎉🎉🎉. thank feck

She's quite upset that it's been "stolen" from her.

I've soothed etc, but by gosh I feel so happy that I haven't got to introduce baby Speculum to the U3A. 😂

So: AIBU to feel relieved?

PS the name was deemed to be unisex it's not. So that wouldn't have been a swerve.

PPS, I'm not revealing the name. You'll have to be happy with Speculum. Okay, vipers?

@LynetteScavo

Kenny a bloody fantastic name, when I get a Labrador I shall call him Kenny. Because I can't convince my DC to have a child called Kenny. Dad wants to call her child Tarquin. I'm not calling "Tarquin" in the park, so she's have to rethink child care DH wouldn't able to hold back saying "who killed Kenny?" At every opportunity

SquishySquirmy · 30/06/2021 22:02

When you commisserated with her on the stolen name, did you say "they killed the name! Those bastards!"

VienneseWhirligig · 30/06/2021 22:10

Grin my first boyfriend was called Kenny. I'm so glad I didn't marry him, although maybe he would have become a Kenneth in his 30s?

niceupthedance · 30/06/2021 22:11

Is it Chandler Bing?

LakeEkal · 30/06/2021 22:15

@FRODailyM

Yes Kenny McCormack.

A nod to "who killed Kenny" from South Park.

Said it was niche Wink

Niche?! South Park's been popular for over 20 years, it's not niche. Kenny is a great name, fans with think "yo that's cool" non-fans won't make a connection.
PurpleWh1teGreen · 30/06/2021 22:17

Could they very possibly be winding you up a tiny bit OP?

TaraR2020 · 30/06/2021 22:21

I can't believe this thread got 3 pages in before anyone picked up on 'speculum' Shock Grin

I actually quite like the name Kenny, too.

ChargingBuck · 30/06/2021 22:21

The problem with that is it actually has to be funny... Otherwise it's just sort of shit tedious.

But @GreyhoundG1rl, much as I enjoy your incisive & insightful posts elsethread, I have to diagree.

Because I DO find it funny. Speculum is such a genius bit of daftness I can't resist it.

That's why I'm bothering to post on the thread. I happen to find it engaging. If I found it shit tedious, I wouldn't prolong the tedium by posting.

YMMV, & I don't care who finds it funny or not, just puzzled why PP wasted more time posting complaints about the thread wasting their time than they would have spent just scrolling on by ...

Ginger1982 · 30/06/2021 22:23

Who even knew Kenny's surname? I think you're being weird.

ChargingBuck · 30/06/2021 22:26

'diagree'??? FFS. disagree

(Am hoping for Diagree for my next GC).

PaleGreenGhost · 30/06/2021 22:27

Yabu because South Park is one of the best things on screen.

Sorry to say I know of three children named after family pets so don't be so sure....

Perfectlystill · 30/06/2021 22:31

That's so funny! If we got a boy puppy we were going to call him Kenny.

Hilarious name for a small, self-important dog.

I get you OP

Ericaequites · 30/06/2021 22:32

Xena?

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 30/06/2021 22:37

I know a Kendra who goes by the name Kenny, I quite like it

Anyway yabu it's her (future)dc, she can chose whatever name she likes. I wasn't the biggest fan of any of my gc namesat first but there's no way I would have said anything and they've grown on me now (almost)

PrincessNutella · 30/06/2021 22:47

Tony Soprano?

SofiaMichelle · 30/06/2021 22:58

Anyusernameleft · 30/06/2021 23:10

That's not a recognisable name IMO...I don't love thd name Kenny but I woulsn't have to freeze my face to disguise my horror. It's a perfectly ok name. There are far far worse choices. I thought it would be Chandler Bing or some equally totally recognisable name from TV.

saraclara · 30/06/2021 23:16

Throughout her pregnancy, DD had a name in mind that I hated. And other relatives were taken aback when she told them, and said things like "oh....unusual.." It was also tied to something popular cultural. But by the time the baby was born, she'd changed her mind, thank the Lord. And the name they chose instead was lovely and quite normal.

But like you, I really struggled. I used to keep saying it to myself and willing myself to get used to it, because it WOULD be okay. Except it wouldn't.

saraclara · 30/06/2021 23:18

I hadn't read the second half of the thread when I posted.

Kenny? Jeeze, my daughter's choice was FAR worse.

FunMcCool · 30/06/2021 23:21

I’m not sure South Park is niche!?

…totally misses point of thread.

Sorry@doyouneedtowean. Phone auto corrected to Tyrian never seen GOT just had the name drilled into me as Dmum is a massive Tyrion fan Grin

RestingPandaFace · 01/07/2021 00:00

@MiddleClassProblem

Oh I was thinking it was going to be called Sheldon Kuper.

I know that the point of this thread is just to have people guessing the name.

I agree it was going to be Sheldon.
watingroom2 · 01/07/2021 00:20

@TheRebelle

Quite niche, hmmm?

Doctor Whom?
Sherlock Houses?

I read that - reversed the words and thought..
