To be pathetically relieved regarding this name?

First off, obvious name change.

I'm fully aware that this is an utterly ridiculous thing to have emotions about, but I did and do. I'm quite cringey that I care so much, but shrug, it's me.

The details:

DD1 is 23, in a long term relationship with a lovely man from university, and they're talking of the future.

One is babies.

They've picked their first child's name. And told me. I'm, ahem, not a fan underfuckingstatement.

Unusually for me, I remained wise and just glossed over the matter and deflected the conversation [straight outta toddler years] so as not to hurt their feelings.

Now I'm wise enough to know that it's nothing to do with me, and whatever the name is, put that newborn into my arms I will be 100% head over heels and be proud to introduce my grandchild to the world.

But this has been causing me angst. I cannot believe they'd settle on this name, when there's so many others out there.

The name is from a TV show they love, it's quite niche, but if you know, you know,!and, I think, is ugly on its own. But boyfriend's surname is very very close to character's surname, so it's pretty fricken obvious it's a nod the this character 😭.

However, it could be years (if at all) till this naming is pertinent, and many things could change in that time. But, I'm a certain sort, and I dwell on things 🙄.

HOWEVER, boyfriend's brother has just had a puppy and used this name 🎉🎉🎉. thank feck

She's quite upset that it's been "stolen" from her.

I've soothed etc, but by gosh I feel so happy that I haven't got to introduce baby Speculum to the U3A. 😂

So: AIBU to feel relieved?

PS the name was deemed to be unisex it's not. So that wouldn't have been a swerve.

PPS, I'm not revealing the name. You'll have to be happy with Speculum. Okay, vipers?

@doyouneedtowean of course it’s her decision to take her partners surname. That wasn’t really the point I was making. More that deciding on your future children’s names and practising your “mrs” signature are things you do at 14 when you have a huge crush on someone. But OP’s update indicates it’s a bit of idle dreaming with her daughter instead planning career and travel. I would though wonder why she’s quite upset at having the name stolen, if her focus isn’t really on parenthood

FlaminEckVera · 30/06/2021 19:54

@FRODailyM Why can you not tall us the name? Especially if your DD isn't gonna use it now that a dog she knows has it?

FlaminEckVera · 30/06/2021 19:55

TELL us the name - not tall!

No.

Has anyone so far been close?

TheRebelle · 30/06/2021 20:04

Quite niche, hmmm?

Doctor Whom?
Sherlock Houses?

Somethingsnappy · 30/06/2021 20:05

@Fckingfuming

Tyrian?
I was going down the Tyrion route too, in my head. And you said the surname was very similar. So I'm going with Tyrion Bannister.
FlaminEckVera · 30/06/2021 20:05

@FRODailyM I am not revealing the name. OK vipers?'

Why not?

MargaretThatcherMilkSnatcher · 30/06/2021 20:06

I think the name is Chandler, and the boyfriend's surname is Bingham.

If this thread gets deleted now you'll know I'm right Grin

I reckon it's Buffy, only because a puppy named Buffy would be the cutest thing.

Not your baby = not your choice. You already had your turn at picking names

NautaOcts · 30/06/2021 20:12

Does anyone else think it’s weird to name your first child with someone early in your relationship when you’re not planning to have kids for ages?
Or just me that’s a weird cynic

CrappyBirthday2Me · 30/06/2021 20:12

I had a baby at 23 and I have a career and have travelled too. And I’ll also travel in my late 40s when my children are adults. She’s not a child. You could well meet Speculum 2 before long.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 30/06/2021 20:13

Tyrion Lancaster

TSSDNCOP · 30/06/2021 20:13

You have learned well from the MN adage of keeping quiet and hoping the young uns come to their senses.

You're going to get absolutely clobbered for not revealing it though.

Speculum could turn out to be a grower though Grin

Xuli · 30/06/2021 20:17

My brother and his wife have picked some, ahem, unusual names to say the least.

The look on my parents face when they were told and fought to keep quiet was a thing to behold.
