To be pathetically relieved regarding this name?

First off, obvious name change.

I'm fully aware that this is an utterly ridiculous thing to have emotions about, but I did and do. I'm quite cringey that I care so much, but shrug, it's me.

The details:

DD1 is 23, in a long term relationship with a lovely man from university, and they're talking of the future.

One is babies.

They've picked their first child's name. And told me. I'm, ahem, not a fan underfuckingstatement.

Unusually for me, I remained wise and just glossed over the matter and deflected the conversation [straight outta toddler years] so as not to hurt their feelings.

Now I'm wise enough to know that it's nothing to do with me, and whatever the name is, put that newborn into my arms I will be 100% head over heels and be proud to introduce my grandchild to the world.

But this has been causing me angst. I cannot believe they'd settle on this name, when there's so many others out there.

The name is from a TV show they love, it's quite niche, but if you know, you know,!and, I think, is ugly on its own. But boyfriend's surname is very very close to character's surname, so it's pretty fricken obvious it's a nod the this character 😭.

However, it could be years (if at all) till this naming is pertinent, and many things could change in that time. But, I'm a certain sort, and I dwell on things 🙄.

HOWEVER, boyfriend's brother has just had a puppy and used this name 🎉🎉🎉. thank feck

She's quite upset that it's been "stolen" from her.

I've soothed etc, but by gosh I feel so happy that I haven't got to introduce baby Speculum to the U3A. 😂

So: AIBU to feel relieved?

PS the name was deemed to be unisex it's not. So that wouldn't have been a swerve.

PPS, I'm not revealing the name. You'll have to be happy with Speculum. Okay, vipers?

Kenny isn’t bad at all.
It kind of reminds me of Ken Barlow and I’d say it’s quite an old fashioned name but Kenny is quite cool and a girl called be called Kendall and have Kenny as a nickname.
It’s actually growing on me as I’m writing lol

PleaseBringCoffee · 30/06/2021 21:03

@NotExactlyHappyToHelp hahahaha

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 30/06/2021 21:05

But Kenny is a normal name. I've known many Ken, Kenny, Kenneth in my lifetime. I doubt it would have received much negative attention, and I agree that Kenny would work on a girl too.

BoatyMcBoatMom · 30/06/2021 21:08

I quite like Kenny

NotTheCatsWhiskers · 30/06/2021 21:11

Oh I thought it was going to be some GOT name.

Monr0e · 30/06/2021 21:16

How the chuffin chuff can they think Kenny is unisex Confused

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 30/06/2021 21:16

If you're meaning the geographically niche series y s, then it's definitely not unisex

But Nick (Knowles), Lowri (Turner), Kate (McIntyre) and Brigid (Calderhead) are all perfectly normal names, aren't they?!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 30/06/2021 21:18

Until you said, I was going with Fizz and the BF's surname being Twoonie or something like that, but.... what's wrong with Kenny? I was expecting something outlandish and exotic and ridiculous - not a normal name like Kenny.

Noname1999 · 30/06/2021 21:21

How is a cartoon that's been around for almost 25 years niche?

(Yes I know I'm missing the point...)

DrManhattan · 30/06/2021 21:28

Eh? No one would even notice ( and / or care)

I thought it was going to be something proper shocking

ChargingBuck · 30/06/2021 21:28

Okay. I'm SO happy with Speculum that I need to take issue with your terrible parenting choices.

Why did you not instantly leap to DD's defence re: puppy name, launch a thread about its marvellousness here, & get yourself goaded into organising a giant row followed by instant mass NC with the puppy owner?

If nobody's talking to them, DD can happily revert to her first choice of name, & it's 100% reasonable to create any amount of stink to protect your side of the family's eternal dibs on the Speculum property.

YABU, & kindly provide a diagram.
Sincerely,
Viper134

I work with a woman called Kenny. She was born in Nigeria and it’s possible Kenny is a derivation of a Nigerian name.

ChargingBuck · 30/06/2021 21:39

Quite. Why post as all?

For fun, @grapewine

Does every bit of self-deprecating tongue in cheek humour require an official "lighthearted" stamp before it's permitted airspace in AIBU??

Gilly12345 · 30/06/2021 21:40

Well if you can’t disclose the name then what’s the point of posting this?

QueefofSheena · 30/06/2021 21:41

It’s totally not Kenny

The problem with that is it actually has to be funny... Otherwise it's just sort of shit tedious.
irresistibleoverwhelm · 30/06/2021 21:44

Sheldon, Buffy, Chandler, Daenerys, Bedelia, Bart?

Come on OP, you tease.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 30/06/2021 21:45

Kenny? What a letdown. Teach me not to rtft 🤣

NoProblem123 · 30/06/2021 21:47

If you tell us the name we’re not gonna say
‘OMG mike’s got a puppy called that, so Mike’s brother’s girlfriend’s mother must be firsttimeposterwithnobackgroundinformationwhatsoever @FRODailyM ‘’

BOOM ! !

NoProblem123 · 30/06/2021 21:51

Ohh I know a puppy call Kenny….

whynotwhatknot · 30/06/2021 21:54

she could get away with kenaly for a girl though

DietrichandDiMaggio · 30/06/2021 21:54

Most people won't know the surname of Kenny from South Park, and I would say it was unusual only in the sense that few people have named their sons (it's a boy's name, not unisex) Kenneth/Ken/Kenny in the UK since the 1950s, so it is dated, but not unknown.

Justcashnosweets · 30/06/2021 21:56

Anyone else disappointed its not Tyrion Lannister?

ChargingBuck · 30/06/2021 21:57

Speculum for a girl should be Specula, IMHO

Works so beautifully either way doesn't it @giletrouge Grin
OP's DD should crack on before the market's cornered.

I know quite a few Ken’s in their 20s up to late 30s here in Scotland.

But a girl called kenny???? Very odd.
