Bovril: Spread or Drink?

BradPittsLeftTit · 26/06/2021 18:33

Need to settle an argument with my DH

He thinks I must be the only one on the planet who spreads bovril on toast. He sees it as purely a hot drink (not that he drinks it) and says marmite should be used for spread instead. I say marmite tastes completely different and I know plenty of people who spread bovril.

I only know 2 people who drink it and both originate from the north

So, AIBU to spread bovril?

YABU it's a drink (please say broadly where you are from)
YANBU it can also be a spread (again, please say where you are broadly from)

I would say IANBU and I'm from central London

as a southerner - both!!

Crunchymum · 26/06/2021 18:37

Yep another Southerner saying both. If pushed I'd say I prefer it on toast.

EastWestWhosBest · 26/06/2021 18:38

I’ve only ever known it as a drink.

suckingonchillidogs · 26/06/2021 18:38

Yep, both - lovely on toast with butter and great as a drink in the winter

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 26/06/2021 18:38

It's a drink. I wouldn't spread it on toast, that's what Marmite is for. Scotland

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 26/06/2021 18:39

Both but prefer it on toast.

PhillipPhillop · 26/06/2021 18:40

I was an adult before I realised Bovril was a drink and not a dark Marmite type spread.

PhillipPhillop · 26/06/2021 18:40

And I'm a Londoner

suckingonchillidogs · 26/06/2021 18:42

@suckingonchillidogs

Yep, both - lovely on toast with butter and great as a drink in the winter
Meant to say - southerner
cariadlet · 26/06/2021 18:46

I think it's both but I'm vegan so stick to marmite.

Nix32 · 26/06/2021 18:49

Love it on toast! Southerner moved north.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 26/06/2021 18:50

Neither.

🤮🤮🤮

sbhydrogen · 26/06/2021 18:53

Londoner 🙋🏼‍♀️ Drink ! Never even considered it as a spread.

RedHelenB · 26/06/2021 18:53

Both Northerner

RedHelenB · 26/06/2021 18:54

However in shops it is stocked with gravy.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 26/06/2021 18:55

Came on to say "Neither!" but pussycatlickinglollyices beat me to it!

Livingintheclouds · 26/06/2021 18:56

Spread. London.

spagbog5 · 26/06/2021 18:58

Spread and my all time favourite comfort food- born Scotland now south

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 26/06/2021 18:59

I've only known it as a drink, and I've just read the manufacturers website, and they just refer to it as a drink.

So you are wrong. But I have no issue with you should whatever you want with it.

I suspect that because it's consistency is like Marmite, some people decided it should be used like Marmite.

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 26/06/2021 18:59

Oh,I'm Scottish

MancyNitford · 26/06/2021 19:00

Both. Delicious on hot buttered toast and equally delicious as a hot drink, especially with a dash of Tabasco.

funnyoldonion · 26/06/2021 19:01

Welsh moved to Yorkshire, never heard of it as a spread but really want to try it now! As I love the drink!

Boohooyouho · 26/06/2021 19:02

Spread, and I’m a Londoner. So much nicer than marmite 🤮🤮

YouBoggleMyMind · 26/06/2021 19:03

I know it as both but I only have it as a spread. Southerner here.

BackforGood · 26/06/2021 19:03

YABU and your dh is right.

Marmite is for toast and Bovril is what you drink at half time at the match
(I'm from the Midlands)
