Bovril: Spread or Drink?

BradPittsLeftTit · 26/06/2021 18:33

Need to settle an argument with my DH

He thinks I must be the only one on the planet who spreads bovril on toast. He sees it as purely a hot drink (not that he drinks it) and says marmite should be used for spread instead. I say marmite tastes completely different and I know plenty of people who spread bovril.

I only know 2 people who drink it and both originate from the north

So, AIBU to spread bovril?

YABU it's a drink (please say broadly where you are from)
YANBU it can also be a spread (again, please say where you are broadly from)

I would say IANBU and I'm from central London

@AlCalavicci

I want Bovril now and I haven't got any in Sad It's years since I have had it and then it was always a drink , marmite is spread on hot toast , As a side line I also drink beef / chicken / veg oxos with toast to dunk , I am cheap to feed Grin
Oh , North west
ReadySalt · 26/06/2021 20:35

Love Bovril on toast, never had it as a drink (East Anglia).

Normanpriceisnotarolemodel · 26/06/2021 20:39

YANBU. Had it as a spread since childhood and my kids now have it too!

cheeseisnice · 26/06/2021 20:46

It's a drink, a spread and a good alternative to stock. The Bovril description of their product states this, so neither of you are wrong.

MapGirlExtraordinaire · 26/06/2021 20:50

Spread, on:
Toast
Bread
Crumpets
Pancakes

It's great in a crisp sandwich.

As a drink... Nah, I'm not gross

Now Bovril on toast or pancakes with a squeeze of lemon juice. It gives it a slight tang and makes it taste almost fermented, but in a good way

God I love Bovril

Also love Marmite, I veer between undying loyalty to one then the other. There is no fixed favourite.

Interestingly I once heard (on countdown I think?!) that Bovril was entirely vegetarian in the days before vegan was an acceptable word and I went home and looked on my jar and voila! A green V.

I have some to my marmite loving veggie friend. She wasn't impressed.

The next jar I bought I noticed the green V had gone, it was meaty again. I didn't notice a difference in the taste?!

Drink from a Northerner

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 26/06/2021 20:58

Yabu.its a drink
I drink it

From SW but northern parents.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 26/06/2021 21:00

Oh yeah I do also put it in food instead of stock. It's got good B vitamins in.

Spidey66 · 26/06/2021 21:03

Its a drink and Marmite is a spread.

Londoner.

ThursdayLastWeek · 26/06/2021 21:03

Both. South West.

I usually have it on fresh homemade bread (possibly evokes memories of grandmother?) or on a hot buttered bagel.

But when you’re feeling under the weather a cup of hot bovril is the business.

Squirrelblanket · 26/06/2021 21:06

Northerner - practically raised on Bovril on toast. Grin

BradPittsLeftTit · 26/06/2021 21:09

I'd be really interested to hear from those who've never considered spreading it on toast to give it a try and let us know what you think 👍🏻 👎🏻

Are all the spreaders mad? Quite possibly!

OP posts:
BradPittsLeftTit · 26/06/2021 21:11

I think though that there are enough spreaders on here for me to confidentially report to DH that I'm not unique and gross to spread it on hot buttered toast and in fact, a great many other people do too!

Northerner (proper north, not yorkshire/lancs 😁), hadn't even heard of marmite growing up, it was bovril on toast (and crumpets!) all the way in our house. Knew you could drink bovil but have never known anyone to actually do so, have never tried drinking myself despite eating it daily. Keep meaning to try it, just never get round to it. Southern DH doesn't agree with spreading bovril, but then he doesn't like marmite either. I always assumed spreading bovril was a northern alternative to marmite tbh. IMO Bovril is less claggy, saltier, tastier and overall superior.

480Widdio · 26/06/2021 21:20

Both,Southerner.

ShutUpaYourFace · 26/06/2021 21:37

It's the only thing my 9yo will eat for breakfast.
Bovril on toast.
Yuk to marmite
Bovril drink is ok, but definitely on toast for me too.
We live in Berkshire.
We are not mad! Well maybe a little Grin

Evenstar · 26/06/2021 21:42

Originally from the North, I would use it as a spread and a drink. My late dad used to make Bovril and lettuce sandwiches which were really tasty 😊

Fiercestcalm · 26/06/2021 21:47

Both, originate in the south. Use more as a spread as NZ marmite is revolting.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 26/06/2021 22:01

I hate it as a drink. Only ever as a spread on toast with butter - especially lovely with peanut butter on top too! Can’t abide Marmite so that shit has never entered my house.

I do occasionally use a bit of Bovril if I run out of oxo cubes too, but it’s 99% toast topping here. I live in the Midlands.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 26/06/2021 22:03

IMO Bovril is less claggy, saltier, tastier and overall superior.

Spot on!

Gorkastalker · 26/06/2021 22:19

I like it both ways, but spread just edges it. It's smoother and more umami than Marmite.

cherrypiesally · 26/06/2021 22:21

Spread on hot toast and I’m a southerner! Hate it as a drink.

msbevvy · 26/06/2021 22:24

Londoner here. I use it for both but I also drink Marmite.

Deadringer · 26/06/2021 22:35

Growing up in Dublin we used it for both. Now i would use it occasionally as a spread and would never drink it. I have tried marmite but it's not nearly as nice imo.

Deadringer · 26/06/2021 22:39

On a similar note, anyone else like brown sauce (yr not chef) sandwiches?
