Bovril: Spread or Drink?

BradPittsLeftTit · 26/06/2021 18:33

Need to settle an argument with my DH

He thinks I must be the only one on the planet who spreads bovril on toast. He sees it as purely a hot drink (not that he drinks it) and says marmite should be used for spread instead. I say marmite tastes completely different and I know plenty of people who spread bovril.

I only know 2 people who drink it and both originate from the north

So, AIBU to spread bovril?

YABU it's a drink (please say broadly where you are from)
YANBU it can also be a spread (again, please say where you are broadly from)

I would say IANBU and I'm from central London

@Deadringer

On a similar note, anyone else like brown sauce (yr not chef) sandwiches?
Yes 👍
mrsbyers · 26/06/2021 23:16

Every way ! I’m currently sat nibbling on a cube

Swearwolf · 26/06/2021 23:24

Oh god, on toast! Let the toast go a little cold, so the butter doesn't melt in and the bovril goes all creamy and beige. It's perfect.

Coulddowithanap · 26/06/2021 23:34

Don't you just like it off a spoon..

1dayatatime · 27/06/2021 00:00

Neither - Bovril is the creation of Satan and should be destroyed with fire!!!!

RickiTarr · 27/06/2021 00:05

Both but my goodness the salt content must be scary. I think of it almost as one of those things like dripping on toast, but a generation less archaic. Grin

Miraloma · 27/06/2021 11:07

My dad used to make me it as a drink with buttered cream crackers on the side to dunk...

...I now want to buy some and try spreading on the buttered crackers!

TellingBone · 27/06/2021 11:46

Northerner. A drink of Bovril was standard fare to buy on the way out of the swimming baths when I was a little 'un. I'm older than most of you lot though. Grin

So yes, a drink. Can I just add that for anyone cutting calories Chicken Bovril is particularly nice as a low calorie drink when you've just got to have 'something'.

@AlCalavicci

I want Bovril now and I haven't got any in Sad It's years since I have had it and then it was always a drink , marmite is spread on hot toast , As a side line I also drink beef / chicken / veg oxos with toast to dunk , I am cheap to feed Grin
Grew up drinking Oxo, with a slice of bread to dip in. Yum! (Liverpool) Can’t stand Bovril or Marmite!

On toast…. From Hertfordshire

MrsToothyBitch · 27/06/2021 18:52

Have only had it as a drink (wasn't keen) but have considered trying it as a spread as it tasted good on the spoon and this thread has encouraged me to give it a go!

I get wicked acid from marmite, so if bovril can hit the spot without giving me reflux, that would do nicely!

OverByYer · 27/06/2021 18:55

I’ve only had it as a drink

Wales

Slayduggee · 27/06/2021 19:05

I’ve always thought bovril was a drink. I’m from the SW.

OddBoots · 27/06/2021 19:11

Both but mainly on toast (or as an ingredient in my fake Ikea meatball sauce.)

1000glitterydicks · 27/06/2021 19:19

spread it on toast.....with salted butter.....or use it in spaghetti bolognaise etc
Never drink it.

BradPittsLeftTit · 27/06/2021 19:23

Glad this thread is encouraging people to give it a go as a spread-it might surprise you!

@OddBoots fake IKEA meatball sauce you say? Do spill!

Its really just a roux with a cup of bovril (one tea spoon in a cup of hot water) replacing some of the milk.

1 tbsp butter and 1 tbsp of plain flour in the pan and cooked through for a few minutes on a low heat and then slowly add one cup (250-300ml) of milk and the cup of Bovril while stirring all the time until it is mixed and thickened.

Drink - Southerner

The best ‘meaty’ toast topping is Beef Dripping. It comes with a side order of a heart attack but OMG it’s delicious 🤤

I nearly wrote it’s to die for which is probably nearer the truth 😂 😂

Lulu1919 · 27/06/2021 20:06

Bovril drink
Marmite spread

BradPittsLeftTit · 27/06/2021 20:51

We have beef dripping in the fridge for roast potatoes. Never thought to spread it! Another one to try-woohoo

@BradPittsLeftTit it’s got be proper beef dripping left over from a roast and with dark meaty sauce and jelly bits in it, Brittania block dripping would probably be horrible!
