Bovril: Spread or Drink?

BradPittsLeftTit · 26/06/2021 18:33

Need to settle an argument with my DH

He thinks I must be the only one on the planet who spreads bovril on toast. He sees it as purely a hot drink (not that he drinks it) and says marmite should be used for spread instead. I say marmite tastes completely different and I know plenty of people who spread bovril.

I only know 2 people who drink it and both originate from the north

So, AIBU to spread bovril?

YABU it's a drink (please say broadly where you are from)
YANBU it can also be a spread (again, please say where you are broadly from)

I would say IANBU and I'm from central London

Both. Delicious on hot crumpets.

OrangeVelour · 26/06/2021 19:03

Drink. With a spoonful of mint sauce.

Mammyloveswine · 26/06/2021 19:05

What does bovril taste like?!

Teenangels · 26/06/2021 19:06

It's the best ever thing on toast!
Never have it as a drink but on thick white toasted bread smothered in butter then Borvil is a food of the gods.
Your husband is wrong and not a foodie.

Spread thinly on white toast with butter. The jar is the same shape as Marmite because they are in competition with each other.
I'm from Yorkshire.

suckingonchillidogs · 26/06/2021 19:07

Salty and meaty 😋

TheNumberfaker · 26/06/2021 19:12

Just a drink. I’ve only ever had it once though, at a very cold football match.

JoveWhenHeSawMyFannysFace · 26/06/2021 19:15

Both, but I haven’t had it as a drink since our local outdoor pool closed. Southerner here.

Mimilamore · 26/06/2021 19:17

Both, SE, only a drink when I was a child but developed a liking spread when older

MyMPwontlisten · 26/06/2021 19:18

Spread.

KateTheEighth · 26/06/2021 19:20

Spread:

White bread, butter, iceberg lettuce and bovril

Drink:

Hot bovril with vodka. Splash of lea & perrins. Fabulous warming winter drink.

BradPittsLeftTit · 26/06/2021 19:20

An interesting mix of responses so far!

It does seem by my count that the majority of those who spread it are southerners.

@GiantWingedWaspMoth I'm well aware the manufacturers state it's a drink but more concerned with how others use it than what Unilever dictate!

For those who haven't tried it as a spread and have a jar, I urge you when next making toast to get a lovely piece fresh from the toaster, smother it in butter and then lightly dab a very thin layer on. You're welcome!

And it is even better on hot crumpets.

Glad to see I'm not the only one but totally accept some will only ever see it as a drink

Drink only.

BradPittsLeftTit · 26/06/2021 19:21

Wow I'm so so impressed by those who drink it who have developed it further!

Mint sauce, Tabasco, vodka! Who knew 🤯 (not me, obviously!!)

I’ve only know it as a drink - Yorkshire

icelollycraving · 26/06/2021 19:22

Both. South East.

MadMadMadamMim · 26/06/2021 19:23

DH is Scottish and says it's a drink.

I'm from Scunthorpe and say you spread it on toast. Hot toast, Lurpak, Bovril. It would make a horrible drink I think. Who drinks liquid beef?

goose1964 · 26/06/2021 19:23

Another saying both

icelollycraving · 26/06/2021 19:24

Dh only has it as a drink.
I disagree with your spread it thinly stance though. I slather it on!

Aprilx · 26/06/2021 19:26

I have never had it as I don’t fancy it but It is a drink, marmite is what you spread on toast. North.

mummymayhem18 · 26/06/2021 19:26

I like bovril on bread/toast. Hate marmite!

newnortherner111 · 26/06/2021 19:35

It's both, I live in London.

Tibtab · 26/06/2021 19:37

Hot buttered toast with Bovril is the food of the Gods, introduced DH to it. It’s way better than Marmite in every way!
(I’m from Nottingham)

AnUnoriginalUsername · 26/06/2021 19:40

As a northerner I thought it was only a drink. Its only from mumsnet I know people use it as spread too.
