Bovril: Spread or Drink?

BradPittsLeftTit · 26/06/2021 18:33

Need to settle an argument with my DH

He thinks I must be the only one on the planet who spreads bovril on toast. He sees it as purely a hot drink (not that he drinks it) and says marmite should be used for spread instead. I say marmite tastes completely different and I know plenty of people who spread bovril.

I only know 2 people who drink it and both originate from the north

So, AIBU to spread bovril?

YABU it's a drink (please say broadly where you are from)
YANBU it can also be a spread (again, please say where you are broadly from)

I would say IANBU and I'm from central London

I'm a Northerner and I always had it spread on toast at my granny's whenever we stayed there, never knew it could be made as a drink until I was an adult.

Bovril is the superior toast topping Grin

TSSDNCOP · 26/06/2021 19:40

Drink Bovril, spread Marmite

RubyGoat · 26/06/2021 19:42

Northerner. I will take any excuse or opportunity to have it. Drink, food, whatever. I’m really only commenting so I can mark my place on the thread for a few days while I try out all the lovely suggestions.

BradPittsLeftTit · 26/06/2021 19:43

Those who say you don't spread bovril, you spread marmite: (whilst agreeing that marmite is a spread!) are making an either or argument when they are two completely different tastes.

I loathe the taste of marmite but love bovril on toast

And to the poster who lathers it on - brave brave indeed!!

I used to really like marmite but ever since I’ve had bovril ( but also marmite XO) I’ve found the flavour of normal marmite to be thin & unsatisfying. I’m definitely a slatherer.

TopTabby · 26/06/2021 20:04

I'd only spread it on toast, I wouldn't drink it.
I'm Midlands area, it is absolutely lovely with butter on white toast...
Might have to get some!Grin

RobinHumphries · 26/06/2021 20:06

Drink - Midlander

supadupapupascupa · 26/06/2021 20:08

Only ever had it as a spread. It's bloody gorgeous on hot buttered toast.
Marmite is stronger and more bitter

OhBiscuits · 26/06/2021 20:09

Toasted, buttered sesame bagel covered in Bovril - absolutely delicious

SmokedLancashire · 26/06/2021 20:11

Bovril’s a drink, marmite’s a spread.

(Unless you were a young woman during WW2, when Bovril was also stockings. Woohoo, Bingo 🤣)

HopeForTheBestExpectTheWorst · 26/06/2021 20:11

Neither - I only use it as stock in sauces and gravies. Although technically I suppose that’s making it into a broth, so I guess drink?
I wouldn’t spread it on toast, although I might try it just to see what it’s like.

Scarby9 · 26/06/2021 20:15

I'm northern.
Bovril is a drink.
Marmite is for toast (although I am now prepared to gove spreading Bovril a try).

littlepeas · 26/06/2021 20:18

Drink! Have only ever had it at football matches though. Marmite for toast. Welsh but live in the midlands.

DancesWithDaffodils · 26/06/2021 20:19

I use it as a spread.
Dont drink it, as I dislike hot drinks. BUT most people up north look very confused when I say I spread it on thickly buttered white toast.
I learnt to spread it from my southern father.

A South African friend used to have bovril sandwiches.

Lancrelady80 · 26/06/2021 20:22

Drink?! Blurgh, no thank you!Angry

Spread on toast for breakfast most mornings Smile

Mum used to put it in a jacket potato Confused

DrunkenKoala · 26/06/2021 20:22

Both - Northerner

Longdistance · 26/06/2021 20:24

It’s both. Though I prefer it on toast than a drink. Dh thinks the Aldi marmite is the consistency of Bovril.

SillyLittleBiscuit · 26/06/2021 20:26

Both. Londoner.

TheGriffle · 26/06/2021 20:27

I know it as both but prefer it on toast. Born in Norfolk, grew up in Yorkshire.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 26/06/2021 20:28

It's purely a drink. Northern England

OneMoreForExtra · 26/06/2021 20:28

It's a drink FFS

But since the advent of Biscoff I have given up on civilisation

OneMoreForExtra · 26/06/2021 20:29

*Civilisation as evidenced by what people are willing to spread on toast, that is

I think a PP mentioned lettuce but my mum used to have thick bovril on white bread with butter in a sandwich with a massive stack of crunchy lettuce in the middle.

I can even remember the sound of every mouthful crunching down.

Is Biscoff like crushed biscuits? 🤢
AlCalavicci · 26/06/2021 20:31

I want Bovril now and I haven't got any in Sad It's years since I have had it and then it was always a drink , marmite is spread on hot toast ,
As a side line I also drink beef / chicken / veg oxos with toast to dunk , I am cheap to feed Grin
