To ask what’s the most you’d spend on a mattress?

I went into John Lewis earlier and tried all their beds (I am in the process of moving home) and I tried a mattress that blew my mind away. I can’t get over how heavenly it felt to in. It felt like I was sleeping on a cloud. DP said he wouldn’t mind spending so much on a mattress if we keep it for a decade and we haven’t really spent much in the last 18 months anyway. What’s the most you’d spend? Blush

Ours was about £1,500 and is a Hypnos one.

Hairbrush123 · 21/06/2021 20:22

@whiteroseredrose what size is that bed?

Our last one was similar and lasted 15 years

Benjispruce3 · 21/06/2021 20:23

John Ryan handmade beds. £500 4 years ago. Best money we spent. It’s absolutely heavenly.

Toilenstripes · 21/06/2021 20:23

I would spend as much as I could afford. Ours is a hybrid, probably around £2k, completely worth it.

Our king size from Ikea is also heavenly and cost £450 - but honestly, I’d spend £1000 or maybe more if I could afford it. You spend a third of your life in bed

kowari · 21/06/2021 20:26

£200 for a double. Mine was less than £100 and it's done me fine for almost four years so far.

Wimpund21 · 21/06/2021 20:27

Only a few hundred...I can't really fathom spending £1k plus!

We've recently got a Simba and it's so utterly bloody delightful I honestly can't see how it could get any better even if we spent £5k on a mattress! Dh and I have both said we won't even bother trying anything else in future it's that good. Haven't slept as well as this in years or on any hotel mattresses we've tried.

flightofthecrow · 21/06/2021 20:27

As much as I could afford. .good mattress is very important

Curiosity101 · 21/06/2021 20:28

Ours was - £1087.40 King Size, bought it last year and it's wonderful. www.furniturevillage.co.uk/traditional-pocket-sprung-mattress/TRALMATT50-002.html

I remember someone told me to
Spend a lot on a mattress and on shoes as if you're not in one you're in the other.

kowari · 21/06/2021 20:28

I fine pillow top mattresses hot and uncomfortable, I like a firm sprung mattress where I am on it, not in it, so I don't know where I would improve on my ikea one to be honest.

CatalinaCasesolver · 21/06/2021 20:29

Mine was 700 and is fabulous but if I could afford it I'd probably spend more tbh

MsSquiz · 21/06/2021 20:30

I think ours was around £1500. A Hypnos pillow top mattress, super king. It's the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on

Curiosity101 · 21/06/2021 20:30

@Wimpund21 We had a Simba, it lasted just over 18months before it sagged massively on DHs side (DH isn't particularly heavy). It also sagged a bit on my side and was really uncomfortable. Prior to that it was lovely but has fully put us off hybrid mattresses for life now.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 21/06/2021 20:31

Up to about five grand, but then DH and I both have back issues so it’s a priority. Besides, I spend more time in bed than in the car, and I’ve spent thousands on a car, so it feels proportionate to me. Our last mattress was about £3.5k and that was almost a decade ago, and it’s still very supportive.

LemonRoses · 21/06/2021 20:31

I’ve always thought that mattresses are one thing worth splashing out on. Ours are no longer new, but still incredibly comfortable. I think we paid about £2,000 -£2,500 for the king size ones, about eight or nine years ago.

myfuckingfreezer · 21/06/2021 20:31

Best mattress I ever slept on was from IKEA and cost a couple of hundred. See no need in the expensive ones

petitdonkey · 21/06/2021 20:32

Watching with interest for any suggestions! Which John Lewis one was it? I’m currently looking to replace my tempur mattress but just can’t afford tempur this time 😩

Feather12 · 21/06/2021 20:33

My last mattress was over £1000. We had it for about 7 years. My current one is about 400 and every bit as good. I think I would rather buy cheaper and change mattresses more frequently. I know it is wasteful but I don’t think even expensive mattresses hold up for over a decade.

Blossomtoes · 21/06/2021 20:33

Ours was about £1500, it’s five years old now and still like new. Apparently you should renew every ten years but it’s not looking as if we’ll need to.

Noodlewave · 21/06/2021 20:33

I stayed at a well off friend's house and found the mattress amazing, different league to anything I'd slept in before. I asked what it was, they said it cost £4000 (and this was 15 years ago!), that was just the guest one, the one in their bedroom was even better! The downside is that they find most hotel mattresses really uncomfortable now in comparison. First world problems eh?

gurglebelly · 21/06/2021 20:34

I find it odd that people are so reluctant to spend on a decent mattress to use for a third of their life, yet spend thousands on a car that they may only be in for an hour a day

Mine was nearly £2k but should last 10 years so is basically 55p a night

I know it’s very expensive but it’s honestly the best bed I’ve felt in my entire life. It’s so good.
