To ask what’s the most you’d spend on a mattress?

I went into John Lewis earlier and tried all their beds (I am in the process of moving home) and I tried a mattress that blew my mind away. I can’t get over how heavenly it felt to in. It felt like I was sleeping on a cloud. DP said he wouldn’t mind spending so much on a mattress if we keep it for a decade and we haven’t really spent much in the last 18 months anyway. What’s the most you’d spend? Blush

We have a Leesa which is similar to a Simba and it was about £600 and it's glorious.

I can't see one costing ten times more being ten times better, but if you can afford it YANBU to buy it.

I wouldn't spend that much because we foster rescue cats and live in fear of accidents and dirty protests. I think I'd cry if one of them pissed on a six grand mattress.

Hairbrush123 · 21/06/2021 20:53

Those commenting at the cost: I’m skeptical myself Blush. I honestly don’t think there was a massive difference between the cheaper mattresses (well the 2k ones) but it is lush.

I just recently sent back a superking Emma mattress I bought in a sale. I think it was £700 or something. I didn't even get it out of the box. I suddenly realised how nuts I was being.

Mummadeze · 21/06/2021 20:54

I spent £200 ish and have regretted it ever since. Every night I go to bed hating my new mattress. Not sure what to do as it feels too extravagant to buy a new one and I can’t take it back now. :(

sbhydrogen · 21/06/2021 20:54

Our mattress was around £600 but I'd spend up to £1500. A good mattress (and a great pillow!) are so important.

BritWifeInUSA · 21/06/2021 20:55

Stearns and Foster 15 inch Estate Rockwell and it was almost $3000 but worth every penny.

motogogo · 21/06/2021 20:57

£1200

Tal45 · 21/06/2021 20:59

We had a £200 we got off amazon, I felt like I was sleeping on the edge of a cliff and that the mattress wanted to roll me back to the middle, it was awful. Spent £800 on the next one and so far so good.

Lorw · 21/06/2021 21:03

I bought a simba mattress which was 1k I believe, changed my life I tell you. You sleep on it for pretty much half your life for nearly a decade, it is worth investing in.

ivegotthisyeah · 21/06/2021 21:07

I've got a nectar thought it was too hard and first but now it's amazing! Had a bad back from my old one cost about £500 with a promo code thought of it as an investment as to me that's a lot of money

LynetteScavo · 21/06/2021 21:15

We've had our mattress for 18 years ahem, a long time. So we went to buy a new one, a couple of years ago, just because we kept reading you should have a new mattress every 8 years or what ever. We tested lots of mattresses. The cheap ones were awful, and I felt really bad for people who couldn't afford more. It wasn't until we tried one that was £2,500 that we found one as good as ours. Not better, just as good. We decided not to buy one, we're still using out perfectly good and very comfortable ancient mattress.

If I had to buy a new mattress tomorrow I accept I would have to spend £650.

idontlikealdi · 21/06/2021 21:17

Our last one was over a grand more than ten years ago. We really need a new one now but cost per sleep for absolute comfort, so worth it.

MarshaBradyo · 21/06/2021 21:19

I can’t remember exactly but I think around £1400

Expensive but worth it

whiteroseredrose · 21/06/2021 21:26

Ours was a king size and was in the sale. My DPs have two singles that cost about £3k each but they can afford it.

I often get back ache sleeping in different beds and it's a relief to come back to my own.

AnUnoriginalUsername · 21/06/2021 21:26

I would give my right arm for a mattress that stopped my back pain.

Dilbertian · 21/06/2021 21:29

Our mattress has just started showing wear this year. We spent nearly £1000 on it 15 years ago. That works out at about 20p a night. It's been a bloody bargain! I love it and want to get exactly the same again. It's a natural latex mattress with a quilted top, no springs or synthetic foams.

Seesawmummadaw · 21/06/2021 21:31

Just over 2k but it’s my favourite place.

nanbread · 21/06/2021 21:31

Ours was worth about £2k but we got it in the sale, needs replacing now as it's old. The new model closest to it is about £3.5k, yikes

SwishSwishBisch · 21/06/2021 21:34

We just replaced an 8 year old Mammoth, which I utterly adored with a Dormeo DNA Octaspring. I have regrets. I’d go back to Mammoth in a heartbeat. They’re around £2.5k and worth every single penny.

whataboutthecat · 21/06/2021 21:37

Are hybrids that bad?? I was thinking of getting one.

whataboutthecat · 21/06/2021 21:37

Never spent more than £900.

NewlyGranny · 21/06/2021 21:41

Every time I start to think we spent a lot - around £1k 4 or 5 years ago - we go away somewhere and I wake up with backache and neckache from a cheaper mattress!

thecatfromjapan · 21/06/2021 21:42

The higher-end John Lewis mattresses used to be made by Vi-spring, I think. Are they still?

Anyway, it'll be amazing, OP.

I slept on a vi-spring mattress years ago - and I still haven't forgotten the experience.

If you can afford it, go for it.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 21/06/2021 21:43

Tried an Emma but it didn't suit us so went for a £2200 tempur sucker king which is lush

Dindundundundeeer · 21/06/2021 21:44

Just spent £2,300, but it’s the 400 count sheets and pillows that really matter.
