To ask what’s the most you’d spend on a mattress?

I went into John Lewis earlier and tried all their beds (I am in the process of moving home) and I tried a mattress that blew my mind away. I can’t get over how heavenly it felt to in. It felt like I was sleeping on a cloud. DP said he wouldn’t mind spending so much on a mattress if we keep it for a decade and we haven’t really spent much in the last 18 months anyway. What’s the most you’d spend? Blush

I recently bought a new mattress from John Lewis, about £600, very comfortable. I looked at the more expensive ones, but this one had excellent reviews, and a lot of them , so I went with the herd . I did wonder what the mattress costing £8000 had to offer, but decided it was tempting fate and spilt coffee to find out.

Their delivery / removal service is great value , they bring the new mattress into the room you want it, remove it from its protective wrapping then put your old mattress in the wrapping to take it out of the house discreetly! The only gripe is that for a couple of months they recommend you rotate and flip the mattress every two weeks, my old mattress was a rotate only . I am getting the hang of it now, luckily my bedroom is big so there is plenty of room to move around .

One thing I wondered was what happens if people send back the mattress after 60 days, which you can. Do JL scrap them, reduce them, or sneak them back into stock. I know hotel mattresses have had more than 60 days of wear etc etc, but totally illogically it seems a bit gross to take on someone’s old mattress after two months.

We have a Vi spring super king size. Think it cost around £2000 in a sale about 10 years ago. Still going strong

Was definitely better than the less expensive ones we tried and ed tried a lot.

Notavegan · 27/06/2021 16:29

I got one that was about £1k and it collapsed in a week. 2nd one was more money and I hated it so changed it. Ended up spending about 2k on a tempur.

ColettesEarrings · 27/06/2021 16:30

We just spent £2k on a king size Harrison Spinks mattress only. Planning on it lasting at least 12 years preferably more. Our last one was a £ 1.2k king size Hypnos mattress and divan that lasted 16 years. We'll replace the divan separately if necessary.

A good mattress is something that should have as much spent on it at possible within ones means.

LadyEuphemia · 27/06/2021 17:06

We have a Harrison Spinks super king, I think it was about £2.5k in the sales about 5 years ago. It makes me happy every night!

ConsuelaHammock · 27/06/2021 17:10

Up to 700/800

Puffalicious · 27/06/2021 18:08

Interesting as I'm in the market for a new King size. My sister has a new Emma and loves it; my cousin swears Simba is the coolest; I'm interested in the JL own brand being Vispring cos I hate memory foam but kids all have IKEA Hovag and every time I sleep on any of their beds it's wonderful! DS1 insisted he got a double one the other day so it feels as good as his old, single one!

I'm very confused right now. I'd spend about £1000-1200 I think. I have pocket sprung right now but it's probably 15 years old (eek) and whilst super comfy I think I should replace it.

John Ryan by Design Artisans Natural Superking

The best £2k I’ve ever spent, chronic back ache disappeared overnight.

Livingintheclouds · 27/06/2021 22:49

£2000

lioncitygirl · 27/06/2021 23:29

Over a grand I think - super king.

Nyfluff · 27/06/2021 23:38

Superking deluxe 2500 from Next was £950, it's the same mattress as a dreams one that was £1650 with layers of pocket springs, micro springs, memory foam and wool.

We have a spare mattress from Ikea, it was about 150 and when my joints aren't too bad I get a good sleep on it.

Prior to that I had a brilliant superking mattress from Dreams. It was full of cashmere and wool and individual pocket springs, a better version of what I have now, and it had a firm side and a softer side. It lasted about 9 years before it started going downhill. I think it was meant to be 2k but I got it on sale. I eventually had to replace it after 12 years.

I have a weird thing about matresses I spend around 1k on the kids ones and 1.5 k on mine every 5 years. It’s literally the thing I’m not tight with. I’m fairly frugal in every day life .

HOkieCOkie · 28/06/2021 05:52

I’m buying a new bed and I’m going for a tempura mattress.

NCTDN · 28/06/2021 07:49

I'm glad I went and tested mattresses yesterday as the one I liked best was not what I expected. The memory foam ones are not for me.

KihoBebiluPute · 28/06/2021 07:54

Ours was £1500 and worth every penny in terms of better sleep since then. However there was one which I liked even more in the shop which was £1800 and we decided we couldn't justify the extra and went for the slightly less good one. I do regret that now, and think that it would have been £300 well-spent. You only get one spine. Look after it by getting the best mattress you can. Also the £60-£100 pillows that the mattress sales people will suggest are equally totally worth it.

Lookingoutside · 28/06/2021 09:13

I would spend £1000 to £2000. Get it OP! You won’t regret it.

OhWhyNot · 28/06/2021 09:26

£300 about 15 years ago

It’s still fine no need to change it yet

Everyone who has slept on it makes a comments on how comfortable it is (I mean family/friends who are guests) and one side is softer

It’s a Shakespeare Leonardo mattress and it’s silk too so doesn’t get sweaty

Fantail2018 · 28/06/2021 10:07

So envious of UK pricing - mattresses are extortionate here in NZ. For example $15K for a king (around 7 thousand pounds)
www.smithscity.co.nz/beds/sleepyhead-sanctuary-paris-king-mattress-9062341

We ended up buying a locally made one for about $1000 so 500 pounds which is excellent but couldn't believe the prices in department stores.

Verite1 · 28/06/2021 10:10

We bought the most expensive Hypnos one in the store. Can’t remember how much but it was v expensive. But I’m a bad sleeper and anything that may help was worth it to me.

Nordstrom · 28/06/2021 10:22

Around 1.5kI think. A Vispring and worth every last penny!!

singleWhiteMale · 28/06/2021 11:55

About 2k

I'm pretty sure those John Lewis mattresses are made by Harrison Spinks in Leeds. If you like them you might want to try other mattresses in their range branded Harrison, Somnus, or Harrison Spinks.

LimpLettice · 28/06/2021 12:05

We were gifted a Mammoth hybrid about 3 years ago, worth about £1500 for a king size. I was heavily pregnant and it was boiling that summer. The mattress was a revelation. Cooler, comfortable sleeping, no sagging together, pain free waking. Honestly, I'd rather part with my car, and when it does die, will have no qualms spending the same to replace it.

Tubbyinthehottub · 28/06/2021 12:23

Mine is a Harrison Spinks. I think it cost about £1800 for a superking but it may have been a bit more, can't remember. The lady in the shop told us hers was over 20 years old and still perfect even though her husband was a very large man.

DulseSeaweed · 28/06/2021 13:55

We just bought a superking no turn luxe something something Hypnos for £1200ish. It was a bit treat as we had never spent more than 250 before!!

itsasin77 · 28/06/2021 14:24

We have a tempur, firm one. Think we laid £2500 for it a few years ago.
Hate the bloody things, worst money we’ve every spent! Get so hot, can’t move properly and gives us back ache!
I can’t wait to be rid of the damn thing!
We purchased our son a cheaper one from Argos temporarily, less than £200 and even that was way more comfy!
