To ask what’s the most you’d spend on a mattress?

I went into John Lewis earlier and tried all their beds (I am in the process of moving home) and I tried a mattress that blew my mind away. I can’t get over how heavenly it felt to in. It felt like I was sleeping on a cloud. DP said he wouldn’t mind spending so much on a mattress if we keep it for a decade and we haven’t really spent much in the last 18 months anyway. What’s the most you’d spend? Blush

I'm going to buck the trend here and say 40 quid 😂. I moved house and ran out of money. I'd skipped my old bed.
I got it from gumtree from a couple who were downsizing and they said it had never been slept on. Its a Sealy and it was immaculate (I also checked it for bedbugs). I sleep beautifully on it.

Curiosity101 · 21/06/2021 21:47

@whataboutthecat I couldn't possibly speak for all of them but on the whole when reading reviews it seems they're often fab at first but don't have anywhere near the longevity of a traditional pocket sprung type mattress. So they're potentially a bit of a false economy.

Just make sure you read the warranty properly (claiming on it can be next to impossible).

And that you try to find reviews that are 2 or more years old 👍

LockdownCheeseToastie · 21/06/2021 21:48

I’d bloody love a £7k vi spring than I tried out. If I win the lottery! Actually have a £1k pocket sprung, would spend up to £2k next time.

SimonJT · 21/06/2021 21:49

I have a superking tempur, so quite a lot, but I look at as a cost per year thing.

whattodo2019 · 21/06/2021 21:50

£3-5K for a super king

bettyfloormop · 21/06/2021 21:53

Our Emma superking is £899 on their website currently, but OH managed to get it for £499 via a really good deal..not sure where he found it.

Its fab to sleep on..highly recommended.

Gerwurtztraminer · 21/06/2021 22:02

I also recommend John Ryan by Design. I had a Hypnos for 13+ years, originally £800, best investment ever and really struggled to find one I liked to replace it. Remember to always buy a fully 2 sided turnable one - will extend life considerably more than one sided. Good information on John Ryan about how mattresses are made on there too. For the price of that John Lewis one you could get a handmade made tailored one. They also let you trial them. Very good service as well.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/06/2021 22:06

2k for the mattress(Tempur) and 2k for the frame, 14 years ago. Worth every penny.

Gertie75 · 21/06/2021 22:06

I can't remember exactly how much ours was, it's a superking Simba, I'm paying it off monthly so has been easy to afford.
We had a cheap one before and I was in so much pain with my back and hips every morning so it was worth getting a decent one.

My daughter has an Emma mattress which I find a bit more comfortable but it's much hotter to sleep on.

MrsSchadenfreude · 21/06/2021 22:25

I got a Sealy Posturepedic online. Was about £250. It’s wonderful. Had a Hypnos before and hated it - made my hips hurt and gave me backache.

MillyMollyMardy · 21/06/2021 22:47

I have a Tempur bought for £1800 from John Lewis 6 months ago, I hate it. It's meant to be medium but it's really soft and is like wallowing in a swamp.
John Lewis came out to check it and said there's nothing wrong with it. Previously had a Tempur for 15 years that was fantastic. I suspect Tempur aren't what they used to be.

Bought this last year, best money I've ever spent

That’s ours. It lives up to its name.
HareofEasttown · 21/06/2021 22:50

The most you can afford. We got an amazing Vispring one in the sales about five years ago and I literally climb into bed every night and think what a great buy that was.

PurpleFlower1983 · 21/06/2021 22:52

Our Hypnos was £1800.

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 21/06/2021 22:57

We recently bought a John Lewis one that was £499, it’s lovely. I just couldn’t justify spending more, but everyone has different priorities- and honestly, I can’t tell the difference (or maybe I just haven’t had an amazing one!)

PineappleCakes · 21/06/2021 22:58

We have a Vi Spring, bought for +£1000, almost 20 years ago Shock Should probably change it as it's so old, but it's still super comfortable and the best mattress we've ever slept on.

My £70 pillow from JL was eye-wateringly expensive (to me) but again that's been super comfortable and I don't regret it any more.

Serin · 21/06/2021 23:08

Benson for beds igel super king. About £1.6k and absolutely the softest, fluffiest mattress ever. It's cured my back ache.

Dancingdreamer · 21/06/2021 23:12

Yes think the JL own brand are made by Vi Spring still (certainly looks like it in the picture. We bought a Vi Spring years ago and it is still as good today as it was then so certainly worth the investment if you can afford it. If not, then a cheaper firm mattress and a good mattress topper would be my suggestion.

I remember that one the online 'mattress with a name in a box' companies had a really good Black Friday sale not long after we'd bought ours. I was slightly annoyed that if we'd waited a few weeks, we could have saved nearly £200. Lesson learned being to wait for Black Friday or other sales for any non urgent large purchases unless you want a specific item that could sell out.

My other fear about having a really expensive mattress is that while it may seem perfect in the shop, you don't feel the same way after a few nights, but then you're stuck with it for years, unless you want to lose a lot of the investment.

Shelddd · 22/06/2021 04:50

Probably 1-1.5k. not a fan of the you spend 1/3rd your life in it so you should invest $$$ in it. It's just the classic sleazy mattress salesperson line.

I paid 400 for a super king and it was surprisingly good and has held up well but I've slept on better and would probably pay 1-1.5k for the right mattress.

StuffinThePuffin · 22/06/2021 05:14

Exchange rates have changed since covid but I think our mattress would have been the equivalent of about £1000.

Still have it 4 years later and am expecting it to easily last another 4, probably much more. It's not showing any signs of wear yet.

IMO mattresses are one of those things where you really do get what you pay for.

MaxiPaddy · 22/06/2021 05:56

Mine was $2400 for a queen memory foam (just me), but would have gone up to $4000 if it was the 'one'.

And I am definitely not rich; a good mattress is just really important, and should last 7-10 years.

NCTDN · 22/06/2021 07:22

I've come on looking for reviews for the Emma or Simba mattress. They're very mixed on here. Last night (whilst not sleeping on our uncomfortable bed) I convinced myself we would get one but now I'm not so sure..,

MangosteenSoda · 22/06/2021 07:30

Current one was about 1200 in the sale and was heavily discounted, so I’d probably hang around for the next round of sales if you can.

Had a Tempur mattress with my ex. It cost over three times the price of current mattress and imo was massively overrated.

HotChocolateLover · 22/06/2021 07:33

Hmm, it looks ok but there aren’t many reviews and the 1 star review is shocking. The fact it has over 28 thousand springs is mind blowing though 😂 In answer to your question, we paid around £900 for a double from Bensons for Beds with 2600 springs and it’s like sleeping on a cloud, love it. However, we’re moving soon and will be upgrading to a Super King as DH is 6’3’’ and I have a tendency to starfish so a standard double is a bit small! We’re planning on possibly the same bed (or very similar) and will spend up to £3k.
