Do you find it funny when people trip over?

I have friends that are, on the whole, generally polite. We are in our 30s. When it comes to a member of our group tripping over though, that all goes to shit and everyone thinks it's bloody hilarious! I remember being at school and if anyone tripped over, they would always be greeted by a "wheeyyyy" and a clap. I genuinely have never found it funny, but wondered what other people think?

YABU - It's funny.
YANBU - Nope.

Yes, it is funny. Very funny. (Not little old ladies though, I would not piss myself laughing at them)

CryptoFascist · 14/06/2021 17:49

No, I find it disturbing when people laugh at someone hurting themselves.

MaloInAnAppleTree · 14/06/2021 17:49

If you’re still in your thirties it’s still funny. The day that people stop laughing and rush over to say “oh dear are you OK?” is a sad rite of passage.

cupsofcoffee · 14/06/2021 17:49

I think it's just instinct sometimes - it's why shows like You've Been Framed, Miranda and other kinds of Slapstick are so popular.

Obviously it's not nice being laughed at when you've fallen (and potentially hurt yourself) but I don't think people laugh to be mean.

I think YABU because it can be funny, but it's not nice to laugh at someone without making sure they're okay first.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 14/06/2021 17:49

Yea I laugh if they've just tripped up and not hurt themselves. Don't get me wrong, I don't find it hilarious and laugh for ages but it does raise a giggle.

BlatantlyNameChanged · 14/06/2021 17:49

It's not funny and is humiliating for the person being laughed at.

Sparklfairy · 14/06/2021 17:50

Strangers, no. Friends and family are fair game though Grin

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/06/2021 17:50

Really depends who tripped

HeadNorth · 14/06/2021 17:51

It depends, if the individual is a pompous buffoon is can be funny, if they are gentle and sweet it isn't.

Blackopal · 14/06/2021 17:51

No, I hate it.

LoopTheLoops · 14/06/2021 17:52

No I don’t find it funny either, if it’s a stranger I usually pretend I didn’t see to avoid embarrassment

gingerandproud4always · 14/06/2021 17:52

@BlatantlyNameChanged

It's not funny and is humiliating for the person being laughed at.
Totally agree. I just genuinely don't find it funny. My husband laughs at people, especially our kids and I hate it. It's so mean.
IncorrigibleTitmouse · 14/06/2021 17:53

YANBU, I never laugh when people fall over. If anything I feel like crying out of empathy for them. Especially if they’re hurt and/or embarrassed.

Dresssos · 14/06/2021 17:53

Interesting. I had a feeling this would be a divisive one! I agree that it is instinct, but my instinct generally is to be sympathetic to the other person's pain/embarrassment! Not saying I'm a lovely person and better than those who do laugh though (in many ways, I'm horrible Grin)

Egeegogxmv · 14/06/2021 17:54

no, I am always appalled for them, what kind of person would laugh at the shock and pain of another person?

NcagainNC · 14/06/2021 17:54

No I hate it. I feel a lot of secondhand embarrassment for the person and to be laughed at is just horrible

EastWestWhosBest · 14/06/2021 17:55

No. It’s not funny.
Why would someone hurting themselves or at least humiliating themselves be funny? Why would you laugh in their face?

Shoxfordian · 14/06/2021 17:55

It’s funny as long as they’re not actually hurt

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 17:56

I find it hysterically funny. I genuinely don’t know why but I do.
Not if they hurt themselves though. I once saw someone die from tripping up. It was hideous.

Dresssos · 14/06/2021 17:56

@jahebejrjr That's awful!

OP posts:
afaloren · 14/06/2021 17:57

It’s funny if they’re not hurt, like my best friend sat in a chair that went over backwards and her legs flew in the air. She landed on soft grass and we were both laughing hysterically.

I laugh if I fall over too! Even if it really hurts!

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 17:57

I know. It was truly awful.

AdelindSchade · 14/06/2021 17:58

No I've never liked you're been framed and those kind of programmes ever since I was a child. I always worry they might have hurt themselves.

Bubblemonkey · 14/06/2021 17:59

It’s like inappropriate farts, it never gets old 🙈
