Do you find it funny when people trip over?

I have friends that are, on the whole, generally polite. We are in our 30s. When it comes to a member of our group tripping over though, that all goes to shit and everyone thinks it's bloody hilarious! I remember being at school and if anyone tripped over, they would always be greeted by a "wheeyyyy" and a clap. I genuinely have never found it funny, but wondered what other people think?

How is it funny when someone hurts themselves?

I tend to make an involuntary 'ooh' sort of noise if I see someone trip or fall, which is probably not very tactful, but I hate to see someone hurt.

Can't stand these 'you've been framed' type programmes.

ShinyGreenElephant · 14/06/2021 18:01

I find it absolutely hilarious. If its a stranger I make sure they don't see me laugh but friends and family we will all be hysterical for ages. Can honestly say I'm sat here chuckling now just thinking about people falling over. No idea why it amuses me so!

SparklyLeprechaun · 14/06/2021 18:03

Not even remotely funny.

DontLookEthel · 14/06/2021 18:05

No, I hate it, my stomach lurches and I feel sick as if it's happening to me.

Pottedpalm · 14/06/2021 18:06

I think people need to grow up.

Thedogscollar · 14/06/2021 18:06

No it's not funny at all. To laugh at someone else's embarrassment or injuring themselves is just weird.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 14/06/2021 18:08

No. I find it a bit shocking to see an adult fall over. Awful.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/06/2021 18:08

@Bubblemonkey

It’s like inappropriate farts, it never gets old 🙈
😂

My partner fell a lot in the early stages of our relationship, probably because back then we wore heels, high heeled boots etc. I am still struggling not to laugh when I remember it.

speakout · 14/06/2021 18:17

No.

I don't find mishaps funny at all. My first thought is always for the welfare of someone tripping or falling.

ChangePart1 · 14/06/2021 18:17

I hate myself for this but it’s one of the funniest things in the world to me. I’d never openly laugh though! And would offer assistance.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 14/06/2021 18:18

Yes ! I have been known to help someone up but still be laughing . It's a reflex I can't stop !

speakout · 14/06/2021 18:18

I find it quite alarming and shocking to see someone trip or fall.
Humour is very very far from my thoughts.

greenluna · 14/06/2021 18:19

I don't find it funny at all

elastamum · 14/06/2021 18:20

No. I am a fifty something with a balance problem. it is debilitating and starting to limit what I can do. Its not remotely funny.

Agree. I was at the beach this week and there was a real Dawn French moment where a man was walking in the surf and the next minute was up to his shoulders in the water due to a sand dune. His wife had an amazing laugh and happened to catch my eye and then we both couldnt stop laughing, like full body laughter. Even now it's funny. I don't enjoy slapstick in general but falling over is funny. Thankfully her husband also saw the funny side.

I like what a pp said about its funny until you are old and people rush over. I'm going to enjoy being laughed at when I fall whilst it lasts.

Beetlewing · 14/06/2021 18:21

No I hate it. I know that feeling of tripping and nearly falling is almost as bad as falling, why anyone thinks that is funny is beyond me and I don't think much of people who laugh at other peoples hurt

CheshireCats · 14/06/2021 18:21

Not funny at all.

Geamhradh · 14/06/2021 18:22

No, of course not.
No decent human being would find it funny. (In the same way nobody over the age of about 7 should find farting funny)

babyt2020 · 14/06/2021 18:22

Yes I piss myself laughing when people fall, especially if it's me, the only time I didn't was recently when my partner fell off a garden swing holding our baby! He managed to hold him up safe like a trophy whilst his arse hit the floor so it was pretty funny thinking about it, bar the look of sheer panic on his face!

LemonRoses · 14/06/2021 18:22

I think it’s situation and context dependent. Generally not terribly funny but I have to admit to being amused when a pompous, crashing bore who’d drunk too many glasses fell into a pond at a garden party and tried to pretend it hadn’t happened.

Tohaveandtohold · 14/06/2021 18:22

It depends on how they tripped though. My friend when I was at uni liked wearing really high heels even in situations I’ll consider inappropriate. To lectures, etc when everyone is busy being serious. It’s her identity. The day she fell in public, I found it so hilarious I had to laugh. Everyone laughed. She didn’t talk to me for a week but then she realised that wasn’t the best sort of shoes to wear.
If I saw a stranger trip, the last thing on my mind will be to laugh. My instinct will be to check if they’re okay. Also I don’t know what they are going through

Plinkplonk1234 · 14/06/2021 18:23

Me tooShock

Bagelsandbrie · 14/06/2021 18:23

I don’t find it funny at all. And I don’t like people that do. It’s just rude and horrible to laugh at someone when they’ve had the misfortune to fall. I have hidden disabilities and look like a robust 40 year old woman but I regularly trip due to lupus and can really hurt myself even if I appear to “recover” myself well. I can be in pain for weeks. Someone laughing is just insensitive and ignorant.

Sorry quote fail there. Me too. I hate it.
