Do you find it funny when people trip over?

I have friends that are, on the whole, generally polite. We are in our 30s. When it comes to a member of our group tripping over though, that all goes to shit and everyone thinks it's bloody hilarious! I remember being at school and if anyone tripped over, they would always be greeted by a "wheeyyyy" and a clap. I genuinely have never found it funny, but wondered what other people think?

If its a bad fall or someone has hurt themselves then no of course not.
But if its a little trip, or an odd fall then yes. And it depends who it is, I wouldn't really ever find my grandma falling funny but I would find my brother if he was okay

Generally I'd be initially concerned and then laugh once they were okay. Normally my reaction is based on how the person reacts to the fall. I find my own falls funny too. I find it much less embarassing to all be laughing about it then everyone gathered round in concern.

I love how there is just no normal middle on mumsnet😁
Either people are psychos who must be laughing at car accidents or they cry and are genuinely distraught at someone tripping.

To hell with normality. Embrace mumsnet

Name changed for this as it is totally outing. My first day at my first ever job and I had to greet farmers in a large hall. There was some very steep stairs coming in to the hall and one of the farmers skidded on the top stair and fell from top to bottom in absolute comedy style. He just styled it out and walked over to the desk. I just about managed to hold it together to ask him his name when his friend butted in and asked "who me or old broken back over there?" That was it, we all lost it. I still giggle when I think about it.

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 19:11

@SchrodingersImmigrant rather beautifully put if I may say so.

OrangeSharked · 14/06/2021 19:13

The other day a man very slowly and carefully sort of rolled off his chair in the pub garden, he was very drunk. He was totally fine and sat on the floor laughing. We made eye contact and I laughed too. This is a funny situation, it was a silly fall and no real risk of injury.

An elderly person tripping and falling on their face is not in anyway funny

MaMelon · 14/06/2021 19:13

Nope, never found it funny when someone falls over. My first thought is ‘bloody hell, hope they’re ok’, then I go over to them (unless others have got their first - no point in a whole crowd gathering round them). Genuinely never understood people whose first thought is to laugh. Even if no-one is hurt I don’t tend to laugh, I just don’t find it funny. Humour is subjective I guess 🤷‍♀️

I once saw a man ‘fall’ in a station and some people laughed. Turned out he’d collapsed and an ambulance had to be called. So weird their first reaction was to laugh - not to find out if he was all right.

optimistic40 · 14/06/2021 19:15

Know what you mean OP, I've never found it funny. Except when I fall over sometimes, but that's more "oh god, I look like a dick!"

StayCalm99 · 14/06/2021 19:16

No it makes me feel so awkward.

OrangeSharked · 14/06/2021 19:16

I really can't imagine anything worse than falling over and everyone just awkwardly being embarrassed. Please laugh, I am laughing.

Surely what is most embarassing about embarassing situations is the fact that everyone around you is thinking how embarassing? And everyone remembers it as an embarassing incident, rather than a funny one or a silly one.

Tal45 · 14/06/2021 19:17

I don't find it funny unless they do because I know how horrible it can be to fall over in front of people and have them all laugh at you. I can't really imagine people laughing once they leave secondary school though, it just seems mean and immature to me.

speakout · 14/06/2021 19:18

For those that think falling is hilarious were you laughing when Christian Erikson fell on the football pitch yesterday?

Don't be a dickhead
OrangeSharked · 14/06/2021 19:20

Don't be ridiculous @speakout

speakout · 14/06/2021 19:21

Why is that a ridiculous question?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/06/2021 19:21

It's actually quite fascinating how in themission of ebing the "better people" some poster here turn absolutely ridiculous. Stop being dickheads.

Most people said it absolutely depends on a situation. If your mate falls over and it's funny, it's funny.
If you see 29 year old suddenly going face down on a pitch (and unless you live under the rock, you know players die suddenly), it's totally different matter.

It's also incredibly distasteful to use him lile this. Shame on you

Crazysheep · 14/06/2021 19:22

@speakout he didn't fall though he collapsed. A collapse and a comedy fall are two totally different things.

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 19:22

I thought what happened to Christian Eriksen was awful. I mean who wouldn’t?
In contrast I know there were lots of people laughing at the goalie in the Scotland game getting tangled up in the net. I think the vast majority of people are able to distinguish these situations.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/06/2021 19:23

And with this I.am flouncing because Saint McSaintfaces here are being right dicks

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 19:24

Indeed. Those claiming the higher moral ground are quick to use the most offensive ways of attacking other people.

Dumbledoresgirl · 14/06/2021 19:24

@SappysCurry

The fact you are suppressing it does not make any difference I’m afraid
Doesn't it? If I hit you, I could be arrested for assault. If I suppressed the urge to hit you, I would have committed no crime.

Can you really not see the difference?
speakout · 14/06/2021 19:27

SchrodingersImmigrant

You miss my point by a mile.

I watched the event yesterday. In the immediate moments after he fell, other players around him were unconcerned, they carried on playing for a few moments, assuming he had slipped or lost his footing.
The point is when someone hits the floor you don;t know how serious it is- and if laughing is the immediate response that is innapropriate.
Those who laugh are not actually waiting until the person is checked over before laughing are they.

MilesOfSand · 14/06/2021 19:27

I don’t like it but I also find it kind of a bit thick. I love sharp, observational witty humour. I’m not saying I’m those things, but that’s the stuff that makes me laugh.

SappysCurry · 14/06/2021 19:27

I mean morally of course, as you know - the fact you want to laugh but manage to heroically suppress it doesn’t make any difference
