Do you find it funny when people trip over?

I have friends that are, on the whole, generally polite. We are in our 30s. When it comes to a member of our group tripping over though, that all goes to shit and everyone thinks it's bloody hilarious! I remember being at school and if anyone tripped over, they would always be greeted by a "wheeyyyy" and a clap. I genuinely have never found it funny, but wondered what other people think?

@BlatantlyNameChanged

It's not funny and is humiliating for the person being laughed at.
This 100%!
Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 18:56

What if the person who falls is also laughing?

moovinon · 14/06/2021 18:57

Yes, I find it hilarious. Always have done. I'm not sure it will ever go

Then they are obviously disturbed
FunnyWonder · 14/06/2021 18:59

I have never found it funny, unless it's staged and I'm supposed to laugh. I always feel as if it has happened to me, together with all the accompanying shock, embarrassment and possible pain.

I am a bit clumsy and tend to misjudge the width of a space or time things wrongly and end up banging an elbow or hip, but it got much worse during peri menopause when I tripped and fell a few times. I don't know if it looked funny or not but I came down more heavily than I ever could have imagined and flayed half the skin off my knees and palms.

So, no, not funny to me, but I appreciate the nervous instinct to laugh.

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 18:59

What? So you fall and you laugh at yourself and that means you are disturbed? I mean, seriously?

Geamhradh · 14/06/2021 18:59

@Jahebejrjr

Dear god indeed. If no one is hurt it can be funny. It doesn’t make you a sociopath Confused
You find it funny. I find it disgusting. I also find it surprising that someone who "saw someone die" from falling still finds it funny when people fall but don't (presumably) die as a result.
SpaceRaiders · 14/06/2021 19:01

I do find it funny as long as the injury isn’t serious and there’s no blood. However any other time it’s fair game, but I do tend to rib close friends and family mercilessly.

The morning after a heavy night on the Prosecco, I was running in the rain, across my friends drive. I slipped on some edging stones, in slow motion I face planted in the gravel. Three years later, I’ve never quite lived that one down.

NameyNameyNameChangey · 14/06/2021 19:01

Sometimes yes and sometimes no.
Depends on the person and the trip (I once staggered through the entire length of my house from the front door before lading on my arse in the kitchen... yes, it was hilarious!)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/06/2021 19:02

Selfpsychopatic😁
Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 19:03

Obviously I have enough emotional intelligence to distinguish between a situation where someone hurts themselves and where they don’t. DP is disabled and falls a lot. On those occasions he doesn’t hurt himself we laugh about it. Maybe it’s our coping mechanism. When he’s drunk and falls I shout at him because he has made himself vulnerable. Like I said if it’s a daft pratfall, another story.

SappysCurry · 14/06/2021 19:03
@SappysCurry Do you take everything in life so literally?
No
Do you slow down at road traffic accidents ? You know in case the Lolz

MoirasWigStand · 14/06/2021 19:04

I fall over a lot, I'm clumsy, I've broken Jones from tripping. And guess what I laugh at myself falling over and at other people. Even if I'm hurt. Because usually it is funny

olidora63 · 14/06/2021 19:04

Sorry after falling over breaking my arm and dislocating my shoulder and now ,even a couple of years later absolutely petrified of falling again! I think anyone should seriously consider not just the pain but the complete loss of confidence that people experience after having a fall ...regardless of their age !

@ohforarainyday

No I think it's awful. I'm disabled, and people always laugh at me even when I'm seriously injured and obviously need medical help.

Same. It apparently looks hilarious when my wheelchair tips backwards.

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 19:05

Of course I slow down at accidents because I take pleasure in other peoples suffering*

*don’t be bloody ridiculous

SappysCurry · 14/06/2021 19:06

From previous posts it would appear that you do though ?

Not my type of humour at all. I'm just embarrassed for them. I know that I, and a lot of other people, pretend that I'm ok out of embarrassment when actually its really painful but you feel like you can't say because people are laughing

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 14/06/2021 19:07

No it's. It's not funny. And I can't watch programmes like You've been framed as I don't see what's good about watching people hurt themselves.

Jahebejrjr · 14/06/2021 19:07

What? How? Look you can call me a sociopath and a psychopath as much as you like (I’m not). I just have a daft sense of humour. I am not alone.

Burnt0utMum · 14/06/2021 19:07

I don't find it funny when someone falls and can't really see how it could be funny. I've had a couple of falls in my 20s that hurt really badly (once down the stairs and once from fainting) so I don't think it's acceptable to laugh just because someone is young either.

Having spent my childhood being the one who was always laughed AT (and not in a friendly or jokey way, but nasty way), I don’t laugh out loud no.

I would be lying if I said I didn’t internally smirk at times, depending who it is and the circumstances, o sometimes have to hide a smile.

As I’ve got older, (and since I become a parent?) I seem to be much more aware of potential injury as well, and don’t find trips or falls like that at all funny, internally or otherwise. When there’s potential for injury my instinctive reaction is ‘oooo, are they ok?!

So yeah, when I was younger I would laugh internally, unless they were obviously hurt. As I’ve got older I’m more aware of the potential for them to be hurt so even internally laughing is far outweighed by my instinct to check they are ok.
