Do you find it funny when people trip over?

I have friends that are, on the whole, generally polite. We are in our 30s. When it comes to a member of our group tripping over though, that all goes to shit and everyone thinks it's bloody hilarious! I remember being at school and if anyone tripped over, they would always be greeted by a "wheeyyyy" and a clap. I genuinely have never found it funny, but wondered what other people think?

@SchrodingersImmigrant

Really depends who tripped
Exactly, and the circumstances, I recall someone yelling at me for some reason as she walked away, can't recall the finer details, I didn't respond which infuriated her more, right up until she fell over a kerb. Now that was really funny.

No. My DH has Menieres disease and is prone to dropping and has broken bones before. Even before that I never found it amusing, hate falling on ice in front of people.

YANBU OP.

I also think the people who are saying 'It's funny as long as the person didn't hurt themselves' are essentially lying. You don't wait to see if they've hurt themselves and then make a decision as to whether to start laughing, do you? The laughter is an immediate reaction. And smothering your laughter afterwards to say "Oh sorry - I didn't realise you'd actually hurt yourself" doesn't excuse you.

Did you enjoy your trip?

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 24/02/2022 17:08

@BobaTea

I avoid wearing heels -,they are the enemy! And I’ve been doing a lot of yoga which has improved my balance and (touch wood) reduced the frequency of the falls.

LuckyAmy1986 · 24/02/2022 17:22

No, I hate it, my stomach lurches and I feel sick as if it's happening to me

Same, not funny no

Runmybathforme · 24/02/2022 17:42

Yes, I laugh until I cry. I still belly laugh at the memory of colleague falling over, it happened years ago. One minute she was walking beside me, the next , she was on the floor. She was actually off work for a couple of days with a bad knee. She saw the funny side as well, as did all of our colleagues. But then we're nurses, so have a dark sense of humour anyway.

TheHaka · 24/02/2022 17:47

Depends who it is. I remember an old lady (I was young at the time so she appeared to be old) fell over & her shopping went every where. A young bloke laughed at her. She grabbed a tin of baked beans & pailed it off his head 😆

SilverSplitsTheBlue · 24/02/2022 17:52

DM fell ever in superdrug and got her arse stuck in a bucket. It was the funniest thing ever, I didn't have the strength to lift her out as I kept getting the giggles. NOBODY else laughed though.

IsItTooHotInHere · 24/02/2022 17:55

YANBU. It's not funny at all.

StScholastica · 24/02/2022 17:56

Bit of a zombie thread this.

hiredandsqueak · 24/02/2022 18:04

No, not as a rule, but I do remember as a teen going to my Saturday morning guitar lesson and the pavements were trecherous after snow and the freezing and partially thawing and freezing for a week. I saw a woman on the opposite side of the road slip, both feet went from under her and she landed heavily on her backside. What made me laugh was that she had fallen in front of a church below one of those signs they used to have outside lots of churches back then which said "If you are in danger of losing your footing........come in and kneel with us" Grin

MissMaple82 · 24/02/2022 18:06

You're on psychopath level if you find another human being falling over and possibly hurting themselves even remotely funny.

tammyjess · 24/02/2022 18:07

It wouldn't occur to me to laugh?!

MissMaple82 · 24/02/2022 18:09

All those that think it's funny.. Will you think it's so hysterically funny when you've just tripped and fallen in public ?? Probably not!

LoveFall · 24/02/2022 18:16

I slipped on a wet patch on our work lobby floor (smooth tiles) and broke my ankle. Not at all funny. That was well over 10 years ago and my ankle is still not the same.

Likewise I slipped and fell on a boat deck. My knee took that one.

DH broke his wrist tripping over a curb.

I fell after losing my balance and hit my head. Broke my glasses and had a concussion. Big black eye also.

It's not funny. I think it is immaturity that makes us laugh at another's misfortune.

Bouledeneige · 24/02/2022 18:47

No.

TyrannosaurusRegina · 24/02/2022 19:09

I find it funny unless it's an elderly/disabled person.

OhWhyNot · 24/02/2022 19:14

Yes at times it’s funny sometimes very funny

OhWhyNot · 24/02/2022 19:15

Yes when I have fallen in public I have laughed. Yes I am embarrassed too

UnsuitableHat · 24/02/2022 19:18

No, don’t really find it funny. I don’t mind if people laugh at me for it, unless I’ve hurt myself.

ThatsNotMyGolem · 24/02/2022 19:23

Since I had DD, seeing people trip over gives me a weird visceral lurch in my belly.

OkThenJustChill · 24/02/2022 19:57

Nope, it just isn't funny to me. I don't feel a surge of empathy like some PPs but it seems like a stupid thing to laugh about. It's the same with farting.

Me too! I wonder what the reason for that is.
