TikTok videos are an embarrassment

Anon778833 · 06/06/2021 21:07

Is it just me?

I thought it was a kids thing. But no, people in their 30s, 40s and beyond using it as a vehicle for embarrassing oversharing.

I assume that some of the channels are actually worth watching?

You do you.

Namechangeme1 · 06/06/2021 21:09

I agree. It's sad and pathetic. Can't believe people watch the crap.

ofwarren · 06/06/2021 21:14

I agree with you. The random dancing, the faces they pull and the way they point at the text on the screen...
It makes me cringe

Hadjab · 06/06/2021 21:15

Exactly how I feel, I really can’t bear it.

Sparklingbrook · 06/06/2021 21:16

I don't really get it. But it's not for me. That said my 19 and 21 year old don't get it either.
I can just about cope with Instagram reels. Just. Grin

Ijustreallywantacat · 06/06/2021 21:21

I don't like tiktok but I hardly think its worth getting worked up about. Meh

Francescaisstressed · 06/06/2021 21:21

Completely depends on the content, just like the rest of social media.

EscapeTheCastle · 06/06/2021 21:24

Never ever looked at it. I do however look at you tube way too much.
Is tik tok the twitter version of YouTube? Short pointless things?

User135644 · 06/06/2021 21:25

It's like the film Idiocracy.

Anon778833 · 06/06/2021 21:28

It seems to be mainly people miming to a song (with a load of mess in the background or a child that is trying to get their attention)

You're watching the wrong videos. I follow some really interesting people, my current favourite being the female captain of a huge cruise ship. It's not all dancing and silly faces. But if you don't like it then don't use it, problem solved!

Not really. Most of mine is historical trivia, exploration of famous works of art and haunted houses. The content varies depending on your interests,
Gigglebiscuit · 06/06/2021 21:33

The cruise ship captain (and her cat!) are excellent, I follow them too. Tiktok is like all social media, it's what you make it. I follow history stuff, crime stuff, animal stuff. Lots of different interests. It can be really informative.

SachaStark · 06/06/2021 21:34

It entirely depends on what you watch and actively search for.

I don’t watch TikTok in particular, but I do watch Instagram reels, which are basically the same thing, and lots of creators post the same content to both types of media.

Mine are all literature related, so short videos of people compiling reading lists or critical reviews.

If you only search for and watch videos that you deem to be shit and cringeworthy, then you are teaching the algorithm that that’s what you want to watch... you can hardly complain when it sends you more of that stuff, then!

Rockbird · 06/06/2021 21:36

The cat is just the right side of freaky Grin

Anon778833 · 06/06/2021 21:37

Yeah I don't have an account. But I suppose it's like YouTube - full of crap but there are plenty of gems

OP posts:
RebeccaCloud9 · 06/06/2021 21:38

There's some fantastic comedy, new music, historical/language fact based stuff and inspiring women eg an astronaut and female STEM presenters. Far far more than just the embarrassing dances.

Cashewsauce · 06/06/2021 21:38

It's like all social media, tiktok isn't just lip sync, YouTube isn't just vloggers, mumsnet isn't just penis beaker threads etc. I like tiktok, don't follow any dancers/lipsyncers though

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 06/06/2021 21:39

Your fyp is the stuff they think you're interested in based on your views.

Mine is a lot of political stuff, gay rights stuff, feminism etc.

Ohh is this the one with the cat?! I love her videos of it is. I find some really interesting videos on TikTok, not all but there are some good ones.
User27392 · 06/06/2021 21:40

Depends what you’re looking at. The accounts I follow are interesting and fun.

Notamillenial · 06/06/2021 21:41

It's more of an embarrassment judging something that others enjoy just because you don't like it.

You do you, let them do them.

DolphinFC · 06/06/2021 21:41

People can do what they want but whenever I scroll through a few I'm stunned at the pointless banality.

Never, never, never has there been a generation that wanted so much attention for doing so little.

I can feel the feminists over 100 years ago spinning in their graves when they see how happily and willfully young women are throwing away the victories they fought so hard for.

Anon778833 · 06/06/2021 21:43

You put it better than I did.

Well, if you don't want to watch, then don't download the app. It's not compulsory.
