TikTok videos are an embarrassment

Anon778833 · 06/06/2021 21:07

Is it just me?

I thought it was a kids thing. But no, people in their 30s, 40s and beyond using it as a vehicle for embarrassing oversharing.

I assume that some of the channels are actually worth watching?

OP posts:

I think tiktok, like most social media is quite toxic. I’ve seen some awful bullying of people with disabilities on tiktok live. I reported some things, some got took down, but others stayed. I deleted within a few weeks of downloading.

notacooldad · 07/06/2021 08:26

time on my post is really tik tok!! I had to correct it twice and auto still changed it!

Somuddled · 07/06/2021 08:28

Depends on what you choose to watch. All the videos that come up for me are gardening tips, DIY tutorials and cats. Like most social media, it's based off learning what you watch, what like, comment on etc and shows you more of that. If you're feed is full of crap it is because you showed and interest in crap.

Somuddled · 07/06/2021 08:30

People always go on about it being for kids but I never get children on my fyp because I have never shown an interest in videos with children in it.

JammyGem · 07/06/2021 08:30

I quite like tiktok- there's so much different stuff on there. I follow lots of crime stuff, history stuff, comedy, and I've found it really useful for my language learning too. I think those that are saying it's full of attention seekers have either never actually used it or have been misunderstood by the algorithm. There's a lot of crap but it really isn't difficult to find the good stuff.

notacooldad · 07/06/2021 08:32

My friend told me about a band he found on tik tok. I looked them up and they were great.
I'm getting some great rock band suggestions from tik tok now!

TheKeatingFive · 07/06/2021 08:39

That's what annoys me about Tik Tok. People posting 'recipes' for basic every day food that's been in existence since the dawn of time and going on about it like it's something revolutionary that no-one knew about since it was seen on Tik Tok.

Well it clearly didn’t reach a particular audience of people before it got put on Tik Tok. So the channel plays a role.

supermoonrising · 07/06/2021 08:48

It’s not just TikTok of course. There’s a multimulti billion pound industry dedicated to getting kids as addicted as possible to apps (which of course follow us absolutely everywhere). I wouldn’t call any one app “evil” but the whole industry is seriously unhealthy.

If you watch teenagers today, though they still spend time in each other presence, they probably only spend about 1/3 of the time we did (in the 90s and before) actually speaking to one another. Give it a few generations and segments of our brains linked to communication and the nature of social interactions will have fundamentally changed forever.

Shannith · 07/06/2021 08:52

You are definitely watching the wrong stuff.

Search for things that interest you snd thh the eye are masses of excellent content.

Some Mumsnet approved topics to try

Gardening hacks/tips
Quick recipes
Cookies
Life hacks
Cats
Dogs

I also watch loafs of horse related videos

The algorithm very quickly learns what you like

I'm sure there are stupid videos in there but then there is a terrible load of crap on TV for every Time, Line of Duty or Buffy

If you just see the odd video reposted to Facebook you are missing out on a load of funny and interesting content

There are not many ads (yet) and it's a very democratic way for people to create content. Unlike YouTube. People can only use their phones.

Open your mind it is definitely more than just people dancing. I never actually see those because it can tell I have no interest (if it shows me them I scroll past and it doesn't show me them anymore.

It's an echo chamber sure, but mine's full of wholesome stuff.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/06/2021 08:57

Probably an idiot question, but what does Tik Tok offer that you tube doesn't?

DrSbaitso · 07/06/2021 08:58

I liked what happened with the Wellerman song.

Nobody on there cares if the average Mumsnet user "cringes" at it.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/06/2021 09:02

@BarbaraofSeville

Instant, ad free tiny clips. It's like someone saying "here is 30 clips in quick succession which we think you will enjoy".

YouTube is for longer (10min plus) videos which usually have ads in.

YouTubers I follow have mentioned that they film in a different style/vastly different content when they make TikToks as it's a different type of offering.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 07/06/2021 09:03

It's like instagram. 99% shite.

kylie122 · 07/06/2021 09:07

Yes very cringey

DrSbaitso · 07/06/2021 09:10

Worth it for this alone.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/06/2021 09:11

Anything that gets young people cooking quick wholesome meals is a benefit surely?

Cocomarine · 07/06/2021 09:28

Your OP is like picking up a self published story by someone with no talent and little literacy, and deciding that Shakespeare’s plays must be attention seeking shite.

There’s great content.
There’s shit content.

No really a surprise 🤷🏻‍♀️

thepeopleversuswork · 07/06/2021 09:29

I can feel this turning into yet another excuse for having a pop at women over a certain age for "unseemly" behaviour on social media (see also women over 40 who post selfies/women who use filters etc).

I can take or leave TikTok but I couldn't give a crap what other people do etc.

TheKeatingFive · 07/06/2021 09:31

I can feel the feminists over 100 years ago spinning in their graves when they see how happily and willfully young women are throwing away the victories they fought so hard for.

I’m not entirely sure why you think Tik Tok in particular is some kind of anti feminist bastion. There’s all kinds of content on there, like every other channel.

MissGendered · 07/06/2021 09:34

Useless Farm! I joined only for her channel.

notacooldad · 07/06/2021 09:34

I use tik tok for work.
I get ideas for arts and crafts.
I have used tik tok to help support some of the teenagers that self harm.
Recently I was in tears after someone posted a moving collage of photos her brother who had committed suicide during suicide awareness.
For fun i like MrWilliamspeK.
When one of the kids at work has been annoying later we say ' Caroline, honey no!!"
( if you know you know!!😂)

Ilovelove · 07/06/2021 09:36

I did think the stupid dances plus the stupid jiggling, inane faces and captions thing were being done ironically....until I saw the volume of them increase and increase and then I was Shock.

Until this thread I didn't realise there was anything else to it.

notacooldad · 07/06/2021 09:37

And the award for the most over reaction of the week goes to......thepeopleversuswork.

Wow!

Whyhello · 07/06/2021 10:00

I don’t use it, most likely never will and I don’t let my DC use it either after watching the panorama episode. It is embarrassing when people older than 30 use things like this or even Snapchat. My Mum loves Snapchat and I’m embarrassed on her behalf every time I see a pic of her with dog ears or whatever. She’s in her 50s...

TheMostHappy · 07/06/2021 10:16

Sad I have a tiktok account sharing short demo videos for my small craft business.
