TikTok videos are an embarrassment

Anon778833 · 06/06/2021 21:07

Is it just me?

I thought it was a kids thing. But no, people in their 30s, 40s and beyond using it as a vehicle for embarrassing oversharing.

I assume that some of the channels are actually worth watching?

@alloalloallo oh no I can imagine! 😂

I don't personally know anyone with Tourette's but I love watching the creators on TikTok. You see the funny side but you also see the suffering and pain that they endure too, it's great at spreading awareness about a condition people tend to just laugh at without having knowledge. I'm glad your DD can access things like that to know she's not alone.

Rockbird · 08/06/2021 15:57

@Whyhello

I don’t use it, most likely never will and I don’t let my DC use it either after watching the panorama episode. It is embarrassing when people older than 30 use things like this or even Snapchat. My Mum loves Snapchat and I’m embarrassed on her behalf every time I see a pic of her with dog ears or whatever. She’s in her 50s...
What a load of old horse shite Grin
stopgap · 08/06/2021 17:02

It’s awful. So many people with mediocre “talent” peddling their wares. The animal ones are the only Tiktoks worth watching

Planty13 · 08/06/2021 17:13

Honestly don’t know why you a judging so much if you don’t even use it.

I follow plenty of people on TikTok and watch clips on cooking/travelling/van conversion life/ dog training/other cultures/house renovations etc

Of course some people use it to dance on but they are just having fun?

Planty13 · 08/06/2021 17:17

@DM1209

I love celia’s content!! I literally read that in her voice too haha

PasstheBucket89 · 08/06/2021 17:19

I prefer darker tiktok, 30 secs or so of quite interesting tidbits, there are funny vidros, often mocking tiktok challenges.
but yes the vast majority is a wade through of cringe.

covetingthepreciousthings · 08/06/2021 17:27

There's a LOT of rubbish on Tik Tok, but if you actually take some time to wade through it there's some really interesting stuff. There's a lot of good history folk, and career advice people too.

I also enjoy watching the clips from people like the guy who lives at the Tower of London, and Kevin James Thornton is v funny.

Cringe at its finest. Platform for the desperados

MissMaple82 · 08/06/2021 17:32

Thrres also some major dodgy shit on there. I deleted it because I was seeing alot of distressing things. I think it should be banned, the scrolling thing is insanely addictive, some of these social media apps are causing alot of problems. There's an interesting documentary about its impact on Netflix

TotorosCatBus · 08/06/2021 17:36

It sounds like you're on straight (mainstream) TikTok if you're getting dancing etc
The algorithm takes time to work out what you like but if you watch and like better videos then you'll get more relevant content and get more "elite TikTok" content.

I got TikTok because my teens were on it and I wanted to know more about it. My feed never has dancing - I like food, Amazon product recommendations, bar/restaurant recommendations and pet videos etc I wouldn't say that I was on elite TikTok but I think it helps that I'm not interested (comment, follow or like) people who are TikTok famous or the singing and dancing.

TotorosCatBus · 08/06/2021 17:36

At the end of the day it is time wasting for sure

purplecorkheart · 08/06/2021 17:37

Honestly I thought it was crap until I downloaded it after reading an article about a particular post on a mainstream news website.

After a few days it learns the topics you are interested.
The posts I tend to see are employment related. I haven't used excel/databases in years so I find the excel post with trick and help invaluable. I love the cooking videos. Some of the book recommendations have pushed me out of my comfort zone.

lol - you are definitely not getting it right if you're just seeing the cringey stuff! Grin
cakebythepound1234 · 08/06/2021 18:43

I have a love hate relationship with tik tok. Someone I know has an account on there and it is the cringiest, most embarrassing content ever. It is all very smug and about showing off her lifestyle. She is clearly attempting to be an influencer but it's falling flat. Happily admit I watch it because I find it hilariously awful and because she is nothing like how she portrays herself on tik tok. She even speaks in a fake posh accent, it's so cringey. But then there is lots of good stuff on there too - feminism, books, BLM, music, cute animals etc.

callmemaybee · 08/06/2021 19:28

I mean, people in their 30s and 40s aren’t the target audience of tiktok so of course they will look cringeworthy when using it. It’s marketed towards kids/teens/early 20s.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 08/06/2021 19:28

My partners ex does this she is mid 30s. It's hilarious 😂 But I'm not cruel enough to tell her, just let her crack on.

Anon778833 · 08/06/2021 20:39

I've found some great socialist and neurodivergent ones (am autistic).

The ones that bothered me were people airing their dirty laundry.

There is some good stuff on there.

Jayhawkridge has a fantastic ‘channel’ all about HIV.

Midageman (I think thats the name) has a very good adoption ‘channel’.

There are some good educational disability channels, I can’t remember his name but there is a girl with a channel focusing on her arthrogryposis, its something my husband has and you don’t see it much/lots of people haven’t heard of it. I think her channel is ashleymcfaul. Its arthrogryposis awareness month as well.

Jacobemile because well, he’s very talented…

I had seen a good crochet channel, but I forgot to like it so I haven’t found it since.

Are you joking?
Of course kids and people in their early 20s all want gardening tips, architecture studies feminists articles STEM presentations, medical information, history studies etc.

Facebook was originally targeted to college students - things change and grow. Huge amounts of people over 30 on Tiktok now. I can imagine the youngsters will get bored and move on soon and it will be an 'old people thing' Grin

Not that I'll notice much as I hardly see anything with teenagers in - certainly no dancing or lipsynching.

People are very narrowminded - I think it is great fun - much better than most of the other SM stuff which I barely use anymore.

lotstolose1 · 09/06/2021 01:49

There is soooooo much cringe on there, like so much.

But I do following some amazing and interesting people actually...

Thruhikers - they're currently trekking 3000 miles from Mexico to Canada and making mini videos throughout which I think is fascinating

Crime scene cleaners - these videos gross me out but they are so interesting

Weight loss accounts - I like following people on a weight loss journey, watching what they cook etc for inspo.

TTC - I've been watching a few people going through IVF (not had issues TTC myself) but the videos are so informative and I find myself rooting for total strangers :)
