TikTok videos are an embarrassment

Anon778833 · 06/06/2021 21:07

Is it just me?

I thought it was a kids thing. But no, people in their 30s, 40s and beyond using it as a vehicle for embarrassing oversharing.

I assume that some of the channels are actually worth watching?

Why do you care ? Seriously if people enjoy it does it impact you no . I get it you don’t enjoy but I don’t see the point of golf but I don’t feel the need to call people for enjoying it . To me you’ve gone to the effort to watch some tiktok just to call it why ? Nobody’s forcing it on you so you stay with mumsnet.

U2HasTheEdge · 06/06/2021 22:54

I scrolled through earlier and saw many videos of women in bikinis, or other revealing clothing, showing off their boobs in sexy poses.

I am sure there is some really good stuff on there, but I did cringe at all the young women wearing very little.

I guess if I look for videos I might find interesting I will not get so many half naked women videos showing up.

Rockbird · 06/06/2021 22:55

The algorithms do change the content you see after a while. If I go on my 13yo's account her content is totally different to mine. I don't see any bikinis at all!

TooTiredForToday · 06/06/2021 23:02

I don't really like videos so don't do TikTok Instagram or YouTube. Just not my thing.

ThisIsMyID · 06/06/2021 23:05

If you get dancing things on your FYP it's because they've identified that that's what you like.... I follow some historians, and some people in my areas of professional interest. I rarely get any of the teenage trend things suggested to me. I joined because one of my kids started posting their 3D printed things and I wanted to see what the fuss was about. Several viral videos later, and the creator fund pays them £100 every few days. I'm all for tiktok!

PixieDust28 · 06/06/2021 23:14

Your FYP is videos that they suggest you might like.
I like having a scroll through TikTok. Sometimes it can get a bit vile (usually young kids) in the comment sections.

Someone I know makes TT's and actually earns quite a bit of money from it. He has 1m+ followers and the women in his comment section or in his lives cringe me out. They really are obsessed with him. They actually pay him so much money via 'gifts' or through his PayPal. They also buy expensive items off his wish list on Amazon. This, I completely disagree with. I think it's grabby and doesn't sit right with me. He earns enough without TT and because people pay him to do absolutely nothing he's all for it.
He also only follows people back if they send a gift over a certain amount. It has shown his true colours and I think it's disgusting.

If someone in the comment section say anything slightly negative, his 'fans' jump on them and tell them how he's so amazing and they're jealous. It's so bizarre! That side of TikTok I really don't agree on.

LoveNote · 06/06/2021 23:34

do we really need sneery judgey people like this OP telling everyone they are an embarrassment to be on tiktok and saying its not for those 30 upwards?

you 'assume' its just a kids thing? well no its not.....theres your first problem, you just assume....

NekoShiro · 07/06/2021 00:38

If you create an account the algorithm will show you actually interesting stuff, also humans have always been obsessed with recording themselves and showing it off, it's why we have museums and houses full of paintings and sculptures.

WorraLiberty · 07/06/2021 00:43

Sounds like people having a laugh and enjoying themselves?

I couldn't get irritated by that.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/06/2021 00:47

It's mainly crap

But agree - Captain Kate is fab. I also follow someone who does little conversations with her brain and they are bang on (think she is called Haley Georgia)

Catswithflamingos · 07/06/2021 00:49

There are some fantastic accounts. Like captain Kate and Bug.

It’s about finding what interests you. I never see dancing videos. Long press and select ‘not interested’ for things you don’t want to see

Titsywoo · 07/06/2021 01:01

I'm over 40 and really enjoy Tiktok. There are some lovely people on there. Yes there is some crap of course but I don't see much of it now it knows what I like. I get lots of gardening, cooking, feminist, comedy and health based stuff. Have found out loads of interesting information and cooked some lovely dishes I wouldn't have thought of. It's very addictive though!

Titsywoo · 07/06/2021 01:03

I really like herspective and shoelover99

Titsywoo · 07/06/2021 01:05

Oh and kevinjamesthornton and gregisms

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 07/06/2021 01:06

I love Tik Tok

However it amazes me how over invested people get and how vulnerable people are exploited on there......there was an idiot mother on there recently who's made a whole series of tiktoks around her daughters tourettes. She was holding her sobbing DD on her knee as she was twitching and the mother was ranting about trolls being the cause of her upset when the reality is the mother shouldnt have been parading her vulnerable dd on the platform at all.

HelpMeh · 07/06/2021 01:19

@SugarbabyMilly

It seems to be mainly people miming to a song (with a load of mess in the background or a child that is trying to get their attention)
My sibling does these... I can't cringe hard enough, but each to their own I guess. It'll be a cold day in hell before I'm filming myself miming 00's garage tunes in the work car park.

And the filters with those awful eyelashes that seem to be attached to the middle of your eyelid Grin Why?!

steff13 · 07/06/2021 01:21

I made the Tik Tok pasta recipe and we really liked it.

I heard about it recently due to Trump’s attempt to ban/sue TikTok. I’m assuming the content creators get paid per a certain amount of clicks. The more bizarre the videos are then people are more likely to click on it? Does it work like YouTube where you can search for a video? Also apparently there’s a video duration limit whereas YouTube videos can be hours long. But how does it actually work? Not sure if there are ads place on those videos. How does TikTok make money or manage to pay all those content creators?

BarbaraofSeville · 07/06/2021 06:59

@steff13

I made the Tik Tok pasta recipe and we really liked it.
That's what annoys me about Tik Tok. People posting 'recipes' for basic every day food that's been in existence since the dawn of time and going on about it like it's something revolutionary that no-one knew about since it was seen on Tik Tok.

But thanks for the recommendation for Captain Kate. I'll probably never look at Tik Tok, but I've subscribed to her you tube channel, so now have a load of interesting videos that I'll probably never get around to watching.

BarbedBloom · 07/06/2021 07:51

Well I am almost 40 and love it. I follow animal accounts, artists, an amazing woodworker who makes viking shields, cooking videos travel and also love booktok and have got loads of amazing recommendations.

DM1209 · 07/06/2021 08:13

Therapy
Psychology
Food - FOOD!!!
Child Psychology
Medical
Fitness
Make-up
Animals
Excel (I know, I know)
Education
Comedy
Cultural
DV awareness

Just a tiny drop in the vast ocean of content out there.

Further, the algorithm generally works to show you based on your viewing choices and account specifics, content that you would like.

So, either you or people that you know like miming while living in your messy homes with a child sat there crying for your attention.
Or, you're being ignorant about something that you personally have no experience of. There's content on Tik Tok to help with the latter mindset.

I'm 40 by the way, you'd detest me and my life.

ConstanceGracy · 07/06/2021 08:17

It’s just pathetic and is an app for attention seekers like Instagram but worse

notacooldad · 07/06/2021 08:22

I agree. It's sad and pathetic. Can't believe people watch the crap

😂😂😂
You all clearly have no clue how to use time to to your advantage and gone straight in thinking its about attention seeking stuff.
You could say that about any SM from MN to twitter to FB and so on. Or you could cut the crap and follow your interests.

User3253465621 · 07/06/2021 08:22

TikTok's algorithm needs a few weeks to learn exactly what you like and it becomes amazing after that. You have to put in the work and like things, follow accounts or skip videos that aren't interesting. When scrolling your FYP, check the like number on the right first. If it's over 10K then the video is probably good so you can watch. If it's under 100 just swipe away immediately which saves you having to sit through bad content.

There are people making fantastic content in every niche so it's just a question of finding it. If there's anything you want to learn, from houseplant care to cryptocurrency, you can easily find the best advice on TT. I don't know why anyone would pay for rip-off "passive income" online courses when there is so much on Tiktok for free. Some people have actually changed careers or created new income for themselves based on things they learned on TT.

However, having said that, there are weird corners obviously. This is almost inevitable for any giant platform with user generated content. There are attention seekers, exploitative parents, hidden fetish content etc but those are fairly well moderated. Unless you actively go down a rabbit hole liking those videos they're not going to appear on your fyp.
