TikTok videos are an embarrassment

Anon778833 · 06/06/2021 21:07

Is it just me?

I thought it was a kids thing. But no, people in their 30s, 40s and beyond using it as a vehicle for embarrassing oversharing.

I assume that some of the channels are actually worth watching?

Whyhello
Suit yourself but your missing out!
There's no need to be embarrassed and sneery about your mum. You are just rude. She's doing something that she likes why not?
🤷‍♀️

TheVanguardSix · 07/06/2021 10:22

TikTok is the devil's work.

LizTaylorsFabulousTurban · 07/06/2021 10:23

I love it and find it facinating where the FYP algorythm takes me. When I first started using it it was all inspirational stuff - people climbing up mountains and telling me that I was enough (Envy), then I suddenly found myself watching loads of talking parrot videos, then came lesbian tiktok, lots of stuff from indigenous people and things about culture, and now I seem to be in the hidden bits of historical cities tiktok. I hardly ever see people doing funny dances, or miming to songs.

DrSbaitso · 07/06/2021 10:32

@TheMostHappy

Sad I have a tiktok account sharing short demo videos for my small craft business.
And I'm sure they are great videos that help you drum up business.

Stop worrying about what people on here say. I once got called "fucking weird" because I have a shoeless house and some slippers that I offer to guests in case they would like them. Not just weird, but FUCKING weird! An actual swear word!

MN is full of loons. There's nothing inherently wrong with TikTok.

Nohomemadecandles · 07/06/2021 11:22

@Whyhello

I don’t use it, most likely never will and I don’t let my DC use it either after watching the panorama episode. It is embarrassing when people older than 30 use things like this or even Snapchat. My Mum loves Snapchat and I’m embarrassed on her behalf every time I see a pic of her with dog ears or whatever. She’s in her 50s...
Biscuit

Yes, us over 30s should be neither seen nor heard

What a fucking horrible attitude to have. Joyless, judgy and mean spirited.

LoveNote · 07/06/2021 11:46

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

Bit like mumsnet….time wasting site, 99% shit. Yet we are all here

HelpMeh · 07/06/2021 11:51

Is tiktok "better" than Instagram? I have Instagram. I've never actually posted on it but seem to watch a lot of people doing pottery. What does tiktok offer that insta doesn't?

Insta is where my sibling does the strange song miming clips. I don't need a duplicate of this if tiktok is the same Grin

I also like looking at gardening stuff.

Exactly! Except I'm over there as well.😂

notacooldad · 07/06/2021 11:53

Not better or worse. Just a different platform.

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 07/06/2021 12:29

Just to echo everything else that has been said it really does depend on your interests. For example if you were to flick through my FYP you'd seen beauty, fashion, Marvel (ALOT of Marvel), interesting discussions on feminism and probably some humour for good measure. It can be an amazing platform when used correctly so vital for businesses and content creators (not influencers, there's a difference).

Anon778833 · 07/06/2021 12:52

Actually I'm glad I started this thread because I have now found some really good content on there 🤣

Terrazzo · 07/06/2021 12:53

Your algorithm is just shit! I have loads of incredible artists on mine 😃

notacooldad · 07/06/2021 13:44

I'm glad you are finding things you like after your opening shot about the videos being am embarrassment followed up by criticism of over30's oversharing! 🤣
Look before you leap!

crosspelican · 07/06/2021 13:55

TikTok is wonderful. The accounts I follow are mostly in the niches of :

Witty lesbian thirst traps (I'm not even gay, but...)
That amazing lesbian who folds things neatly, while occasionally raising one eyebrow
African humour (again, who knew I'd be into it, but there you go - specifically Nigerian and Ghanaian, apparently)
Economics
Feminism, particularly Muslim and Asian perspectives
Linguistics
French politics
Neurodivergent humour
Fantasy and period cosplay
Fashion (especially Chinese street style)
Japanese expats (Paperpat!)
Fitness (women who lift, yoga, especially ethnically diverse women)
Offbeat humour
Cats
Horses
A really agressive emu
Captain Kate.

Honestly, OP, either you're not actually ON TikTok and just having a bitch about it, or you're using it wrong. Are you literally just searching for vapid nonsense? Because my TikTok is brilliant. Hugely international, hugely clever, hugely diverse.

crosspelican · 07/06/2021 13:58

What I love about it is who the algorithm has show me so much about myself. I know that sounds twee, but honestly, I would never have thought to look up some of the stuff that I know follow - there's the African American guy who goes to heaven and meets a completely disiterested God and highly defensive Jesus in each one, for instance. There's that Christian guy with the amazing hair who does these INCREDIBLE dances. And of course the absolutely lovely GhostHoney.

I love the weird places it's brought me. :)

CovidCorvid · 07/06/2021 14:00

I love it. Some really interesting people like Captain Kate, some farmer in the Aussie bush, some archaeologist who is really informative. Lots of gym workout tip videos, cooking videos, horse riding videos, some funny dog stuff.

Rarely see any dancing/singing/people being daft.

Don't pause on the stuff you don't like. If tiktok thinks you watched it it will show more like that.

Sparklesocks · 07/06/2021 14:05

I’m in my 30s and I like it. Like others I have the algorithm tailored to my interests - arts and crafts, nature, animals, film, travel etc. I follow one gentleman who does videos of his lovely big garden in wales and another lady in America who lives by a lake. It’s quite interesting have these little insights into other people’s lives.

No dances or skits on mine but I appreciate that I’m not the audience for those so don’t get worked up about it. It’s tiring to see entire generations of people dismissed as one thing or another because of a few silly videos.

Oh god, I've only got a few months left of being allowed to used Snapchat and TikTok before I need to leave forever in fear of being an embarrassment to my whole family 😭😭😭 #clingingontomytwenties #almosttoooldtohavefun
alloalloallo · 07/06/2021 14:29

I like TikTok.

I follow all sorts of stuff on there.

My DD has Tourette’s and follows a few channels and has found them really helpful and quite inspiring. Her mental health took a massive knock so knowing she’s not the only one with it has really helped dig her out of the black hole she was in.

alloalloallo · 07/06/2021 14:57

@MobyDicksTinyCanoe

I love Tik Tok

However it amazes me how over invested people get and how vulnerable people are exploited on there......there was an idiot mother on there recently who's made a whole series of tiktoks around her daughters tourettes. She was holding her sobbing DD on her knee as she was twitching and the mother was ranting about trolls being the cause of her upset when the reality is the mother shouldnt have been parading her vulnerable dd on the platform at all.

Is this a young child?

DD follows a lot of older people with Tourette’s on TikTok and they run their own channels.

People with Tourette’s face a lot of stigma and I’m glad these people are out there, raising awareness of what living with the condition is like and DD has found it helpful and inspiring dealing with it herself.

Trolls shouldn’t be trolling.

DD is told her tics are fake, she’s a freak and weird all the time.

She has an Instagram page for her hobby and has started to talk more and more on there about her Tourette’s. She’s at the point she’s accepted her disability and wants to raise awareness of what is a very misunderstood condition - good on her I say.

People with disabilities shouldn’t be told to shut up in case they get trolled. We should be dealing with the trolls, not silencing their victims.

Notamillenial · 07/06/2021 15:59

@alloalloallo I don't know if you've seen this page but otters.have.pockets is a young girl with Tourette's. Her videos are mainly funny but a lot of awareness and a supportive friendship group too. I love seeing her videos.

Beetlewing · 07/06/2021 16:13

The algorithm shows you. There is a wealth of lovely heartwarming insightful genuine stuff on tiktok but if all you're looking at is the rubbish, that's all it will show you

alloalloallo · 07/06/2021 16:34

Yes, DD follows her already

DD’s tics can be quite suggestible - she drove me completely nuts with “can I get a hooya” that she picked up from her 😂

Thanks!

DD has a horse riding page on Instagram - she’s been opening up more on there recently about riding with Tourette’s. Most people have been supportive, with the odd troll. DD ignores it or deletes it. She shouldn’t have to stop talking about her experiences

My name is Celia and I live on an island in the North Pole.....

If you know, you know!!!! =)

Sparklingbrook · 07/06/2021 19:25

Apparently the 'cougars' are losing their minds over this one, he mimes to Barry Manilow's 'Mandy' while winking but not actually opening his mouth much. Grin
