Or was the ice cream man?

(Lighthearted)

Got DD (6) a 99 from the ice cream van. Didn't want to leave DS (18 months) out but didn't want to get him a whole ice cream.

Asked the ice cream man if I could have a tiny bit of Mr Whippy in a cone and I would pay the full price for a 99. He refused, said it 'all went through the system' and I had to have a full 99.

Tried to reason with him but he wasn't having it, he made the ice cream extra big and insisted on sticking a flake in it.

There were no bins around so I was forced to eat 3/4 of an ice cream I didn't want just so DS could have a taste of it.

AIBU to think the ice cream man could have been a bit more accommodating?

He's nuts! But maybe he was worried you'd take a photo of the pathetic little ice cream you'd paid full price for and shame him for it, so didn't want to risk it?

Coriandersucks · 27/05/2021 16:47

He might have to account for the amount of ice cream gone against the money he’s taken so if he doesn’t give you a full ice cream he could get in trouble for charging too much.

And you didn’t HAVE to eat the ice cream, you could have let ds eat what you wanted him to have then chucked the rest away.

But I do love that you think you had to - that’s exactly what I would have done then blamed the ice cream man when I put in an extra lb the next day Grin

Yanbu

PeteWicksSexyPirate · 27/05/2021 16:48

I love the fact he made it extra big 🤣

FelicityBob · 27/05/2021 16:49

YANBU.
I asked the ice cream lady for a small one for my 3 year old and she said ok and made a huge one which then dripped all down him.
I’m sure 99s weren’t so big when we were kids!

mamamalt · 27/05/2021 16:49

What?! That's so weird... the guy that comes up our street does a little half cone just for my LO! And it's free!!

topwings · 27/05/2021 16:50

That is insane!

Firstly he should have a baby cone option but even if he didn't what system is he talking about - does the ice-cream mix get measured at the end of the shift?

SuperbOwls · 27/05/2021 16:51

Haha this happened to me last year! Asked if I could pay full price but just have half the ice cream for my toddler, it was a firm no! The look on dds face when a towering ice cream appeared was priceless though.

cookiecreampie · 27/05/2021 16:54

I remember a while back we bought a few sticks of rock from a shop by the beach. The shopkeeper said we were getting a free ice cream. We said no thanks, it was practically thrown at us. One ice cream between 4 kids, god help us. Husband ended up eating half then it went in the bin.

Tealightsandd · 27/05/2021 16:55

Perhaps he took a shine to you and wanted you to have one whilst you can? Apparently there's a shortage Shock Summer won't be the same!

SapphosRock · 27/05/2021 16:56

Well there was actually a bin about 100m away but by the time we reached it I'd been forced to eat most of the ice cream.

Sad times op. Sad times indeed.

HoneyDragon · 27/05/2021 16:59

My ice cream was a bigger bastard than yours; he used to give me free ice cream when I was pregnant. I shifted the baby weight but I’ve never shifted all the ice cream from my hips.

Would the littlest one not have settled for a lolly?

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/05/2021 16:59

That's really weird.
I honestly don't like ice cream so wouldn't have eaten it.
Couldn't he just give you a v small one and then wasted the rest?

suspiria777 · 27/05/2021 17:02

Nobody forced you. Jesus.

SapphosRock · 27/05/2021 17:04

I actually can't remember the last time I had ice cream. It's so much nicer than I remembered. I'm already thinking about when I can get my next hit. Maybe that's why he did it!

I really want a 99 now.

I used to ask for another cone and scoop some of mine into it when DD was a baby!

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 27/05/2021 17:06

Our ice cream man gives free mini cones for little ones. Yours is an arse

Happycat1212 · 27/05/2021 17:07

If you only wanted him to have a taste then surely he could have just had a little bit of your older child’s? 😐

HoneyDragon · 27/05/2021 17:07

See absolute bastard, he’s got you. Next time he’ll start throwing fancy toppings on for free then your’re doomed.

I reckon it’s this. There was a woman on one of our local area forums who’d “business shame” local businesses on the forum and other social media, by asking for less pepperoni on her pizza / a really milky cup of tea / a child portion of a dessert and then posting photos saying how crap the place was Confused No idea of her motivation, but unfortunately I doubt she’s alone in her own little world.
HappyPumpkin81 · 27/05/2021 17:10

There is a rule that all ice cream people adhere to - the smaller the customer the larger the ice cream. If a parent has the audacity to ask for a small amount, they shall be punished with a double scoop. My daughter is three now and this rule has been followed at every establishment we have bought ice cream from!

That's how they pull you in, definitely. Next thing you know you'll be going out in the middle of the night searching for Haagen Dazs.
iolaus · 27/05/2021 17:18

I remember just asking for a cone (no icecream in it) for my youngest when he was tiny -

toocold54 · 27/05/2021 17:33

YABU why not just give him some of DDs if it was only a tiny bit or just enjoy eating the rest yourself.
