Or was the ice cream man?

(Lighthearted)

Got DD (6) a 99 from the ice cream van. Didn't want to leave DS (18 months) out but didn't want to get him a whole ice cream.

Asked the ice cream man if I could have a tiny bit of Mr Whippy in a cone and I would pay the full price for a 99. He refused, said it 'all went through the system' and I had to have a full 99.

Tried to reason with him but he wasn't having it, he made the ice cream extra big and insisted on sticking a flake in it.

There were no bins around so I was forced to eat 3/4 of an ice cream I didn't want just so DS could have a taste of it.

AIBU to think the ice cream man could have been a bit more accommodating?

@Nightowlalways

Whenever I ask for this they agree but it’s still big, I wonder if they’re worried you’re going to post on Facebook “look at this tiny ice cream etc” that’s all I can come up with. He was obviously being unreasonable if willing to pay full price! Ridiculous

@SapphosRock

I actually can't remember the last time I had ice cream. It's so much nicer than I remembered. I'm already thinking about when I can get my next hit. Maybe that's why he did it!
Lol! He's got you now OP.

Actually now I'm thinking about ice cream. Is this a reverse? Are you really the ice cream man OP drumming up business!

But you could be so bothered to write a response to someone who missed reading something when (I am assuming) scrolling through her phone at 4 in the morning. Everyone can contribute their thoughts, that is how these threads work.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/05/2021 07:09

Our ice cream man does a cone with a flake in it and then the ice cream in a tub for me. Bloody charges me for the tub too but it's worth it.

Yes, I can be bothered, because it's really odd to say you came up with an idea when literally the first person responding to the OP said the same thing.
Shoppingwithmother · 28/05/2021 08:47

I’ve never seen an ice cream van where it was compulsory to have a 99 rather than just an ice cream though. Surely the options are not just 99 or tub of ice cream? There must be a cheaper option without a flake at least?

MinnieJackson · 28/05/2021 09:53

YANBU
Whippy cones are a well known gateway ice cream. Soon you will be mainlining gelato and snorting sprinkles.

VodkaSlimline · 28/05/2021 10:02

YABU. If DS is only 18 months he probably wouldn't even have noticed. And if you didn't want to eat the icecream you could have binned it.

bookworm20 · 28/05/2021 10:02

YANBU

In a normal world, the ice cream man would've happily fished out a cone and put a tiny dollop of ice cream in it and given it for free.

But we live in a bat shit bloody weird one.

Ice cream is good for your mental health. Go back today as well.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/05/2021 10:17

Our ice cream man has about 50 options on his window. I like mine covered in crunchy sherbet stuff but then you don't Get a flake

mammmamia · 28/05/2021 10:35

YABU because mr whippy is absolutely grim Grin

andfinallylifeisgood · 28/05/2021 10:42

This thread made me laugh out loud 😂 just the fact he made it extra big and you said you tried to reason with him. And then you felt forced to eat the ice cream hahah can just imagine it. Thanks OP!!

Best mum award, this really made me smile bet your boy loved you for it 😍

Itreallyistimetochangethings · 28/05/2021 11:02

When we were young sometimes my brother would have money sometimes I would. We would give the one who didn't have - a taste by breaking the bottom of the cone and scooping some ice cream on it and giving it to the other one.
It was literally one mouthful - But as kid it tasted so good when you didn't have your own. !

twinkletoedelephant · 28/05/2021 13:55

Guess who's been :)

Or was the ice cream man?
Babbly · 28/05/2021 13:59

@MarkRuffaloCrumble

He's nuts! But maybe he was worried you'd take a photo of the pathetic little ice cream you'd paid full price for and shame him for it, so didn't want to risk it?
I agree with this - it happens ALL the time. People ordering Big Macs with no burger patty so they can complain for example. He could suffer real damage to his livelihood if a post complaining about his ice cream went viral. It's sad but it's true.
thelongwayhome · 28/05/2021 15:44

YANBU. Our ice cream man does "baby cones" for 50p and its a nice little blob of ice cream in a cone.

IntoAir · 28/05/2021 16:05

but didn't want to get him a whole ice cream

Why not? You could have just thrown away what he didn't eat. You didn't have to eat it. Big fuss over nothing.
