Or was the ice cream man?

(Lighthearted)

Got DD (6) a 99 from the ice cream van. Didn't want to leave DS (18 months) out but didn't want to get him a whole ice cream.

Asked the ice cream man if I could have a tiny bit of Mr Whippy in a cone and I would pay the full price for a 99. He refused, said it 'all went through the system' and I had to have a full 99.

Tried to reason with him but he wasn't having it, he made the ice cream extra big and insisted on sticking a flake in it.

There were no bins around so I was forced to eat 3/4 of an ice cream I didn't want just so DS could have a taste of it.

AIBU to think the ice cream man could have been a bit more accommodating?

@FAQs

Where is this man who gives extra large ice creams plus a flake if you complain, asking for a friend..
Brighton beach by the i360. It was £2.80 but absolutely massive so you get your money's worth if a huge ice cream is what you're after!

I believe DS1 and DH have been to that exact ice cream van SapphosRock DS1 was very impressed with his giant flake AND strawberry sauce.

Hesma · 27/05/2021 19:18

Very odd... my ice cream man puts a little bit in a cone for toddlers and charges 50p

Lougle · 27/05/2021 19:21

My ice-cream family put a bit in a cone for my dog and refuse to charge Grin

MadMadMadamMim · 27/05/2021 19:24

YABU.

It was reasonable to ask, but he said No, and told you why.

I tried to reason with him. At this point you became unreasonable. You'd made a request and had it declined. Arguing about it puts you in the wrong.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 27/05/2021 19:25

My dd has autism and hates ice cream (too cold) but loves the cone and the flake. I’ve asked for a cone and flake with no ice cream loads of times they are always fine about it (and usually give it for free although I’m very happy to pay of course)
The ice cream man you met today was definitely a bit odd.

SwanShaped · 27/05/2021 19:27

That’s so funny! I’ve asked for a spare cone before and just taken a tiny bit off older kid’s ice cream. Sometimes the spare cone is free, sometimes 50p

Hellocatshome · 27/05/2021 19:29

Thats awful, my ice cream man makes my dog his own special ice cream free of charge.

itsgettingwierd · 27/05/2021 19:31

Sat here reading this and hoping Mr ice cream man comes round.

I won't even complain if it's larger than usual Grin

PrincessTuna · 27/05/2021 19:34

I had similar experience on a night out. Bloody starving and the only eatery was a burger van. I offered to buy a cheeseburger with no burger aka cheese bun. Flat out refused.

twinkletoedelephant · 27/05/2021 19:47

My ice cream man make a small one for the doggo 50p... he reeled us in with the first one free :)

Obviously now doggo knows what "his" sound is and yowls at the door to hang paws up on the front gate waiting for his treat..

hoxtonbabe · 27/05/2021 19:52

WHY did I read this.

The ice cream man came on my road about 40 mins ago, I could hear something outside but thought it was neighbors in their garden or wind Chinese only for my son to tell me ( after it had zoomed off down the road) that the ice cream van was outside. I would have ordered a double cone with double flake with nuts, sprinkles and strawberry sauce 🤤

Seems odd that he couldn’t give you a tiddly one though, you control how much comes out unless they now have fancy machines that are pre-measured and just press a button ( something like the one in Ikea )

hoxtonbabe · 27/05/2021 19:53

*Wind chimes not wind Chinese 🙄😁

Shoppingwithmother · 27/05/2021 19:56

If you didn’t want the flake in it why did you offer to pay the full price of a 99, which specifically has a flake in it?

Why not just ask for a normal ice cream cone with not much in it? Or ask if you can just buy an additional cone and swipe a bit out of the older child’s ice cream before giving it to them?

Gemma2019 · 27/05/2021 20:00

There always used to be an ice cream van outside the park near my DD's old school, so everyone used to go there after school on a Friday and invariably end up paying through the nose for ice creams.

The best thing I ever saw was one of the mums who also had a toddler bought a 99 cone for her DD from the van then proceeded to get a box of Tesco cones out of her bag and take a tiny bit of ice cream off the top of her DD's 99 to hand to her DS. Neither of the kids even realised. I really admire that level of organisation and thriftiness.

I was literally just about to Google wind Chinese out of curiosity Grin

The 99 with flake was £2.80 and a tub of mr whippy was £3 so I offered to pay for the 99 seeing as DS likes the cone and it was the cheapest option.

Ice cream man definitely had control over the portion as I was going 'whoa, stop, just a little one please' as he ignored me and made the huge ice cream followed by me saying 'Oh, no flake please. NO FLAKE PLEASE' as he shoved a flake in it.

Grin absolutely shocking!

When DS was about 3, we heard the ice cream van's music and ran outside. He was clutching his £2 in his fat little hand. So excited. The fucker didn't stop! DS's face crumbled Sad. So I kicked my flip flops off, tucked DS under my arm like a fat rugby ball and chased that fucker down. That is one of my finest parenting moments. DS is 16 and still remembers it Grin.

AlanThePig · 27/05/2021 22:39

Mean.
Our old ice cream man used to save all his broken cones for the dog who’d sit excitedly in the window waiting for him to come up the street. He’d always put a small dollop of ice cream in there as well. Never charged us a penny.

I bloody miss him since we moved. I think our dog probably does too 😂

CorianderBee · 28/05/2021 00:10

I mean you could have just scraped some off with the flake into a drain. It's edible so unlikely to harm anything.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 28/05/2021 02:12

Try asking for just an empty cone after you got the other daughter a sherbet pink duck face cone monstrosity.
One Dd likes ice cream etc and the other hates it (along with chocolate) but loves cones aka ghost ice cream.

He looked at me like I was some sort of monster. I did say I would pay for it…

LaBellina · 28/05/2021 02:55

What a first world problem Grin

I agree it’s a bit odd behavior on behalf of ice cream man.

goshthatsawful · 28/05/2021 03:39

@imisscashmere

A lot of ice cream vans are linked to money laundering or other organised crime. Might have been something to do with that Shock
can you expand on this theory? Because how the fuck would being involved in organised crime mean he couldn’t give OP a small ice cream?! 😂
Nightowlalways · 28/05/2021 03:58

Whenever I ask for this they agree but it’s still big, I wonder if they’re worried you’re going to post on Facebook “look at this tiny ice cream etc” that’s all I can come up with. He was obviously being unreasonable if willing to pay full price! Ridiculous
