To think the UK should not fund the Eurovision Song Contest?

Or bother entering obviously.

It’s a humiliation and everyone hates us so we hardly get any votes. None this year due to Brexit and the Covid vaccine probably.

Poor James Sad. He certainly didn’t deserve NIL points!

The song wasn’t zero points bad. It was no Gemini. The uk either has to leave or divide into its four nations - Wales entered junior Eurovision last year - or possibly just send a hugely ethnic Scottish entry.

Rainbunny · 23/05/2021 09:31

I think we deserved nul points! Our entry was cringingly bad, was that really the best we could come up with? This guy has actually sold records before?

I quite enjoyed the Eurovision this year, it looks like the other countries mostly got the memo to make it fun and campy.

I do think we'll never win again though even if we actually had a good song, it really does seem like we have no friends left to vote for us.

TheRedHat · 23/05/2021 09:32

I haven't watched it for years but decided to last night.

We were easily the worst song and easily the worst performance.

I mean the outfits they chose for his performance were extraordinary. As much as I'm not necessarily a fan of the silver leotard of loads of the women or the mad yellow jumping suits of the Lithuanians, at least I remembered them rather than a striped suit that looked like Del Boy sold him it down the market.

Geamhradh · 23/05/2021 09:32

@Samcro

its not a song contest. its a political thing now.
It's always been a political thing, but that didn't seem to bother us when Malta, Ireland and Portugal used to give us the top slots.

It only started irritating us when those pesky ex-Balkan and Russian states started divvying out the points among themselves.

Italy didn't get great points from San Marino, Malta or Switzerland iirc, so the political voting argument only goes so far.

prettybird · 23/05/2021 09:32

You forgot the white socks WinkGrin

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 23/05/2021 09:33

I mean, he was crap but we’ve done poorly for years even before Brexit. I do just think we’re quite disliked, everyone knows the UK will bomb. I reckon even Adele could represent us and we’d still bomb.

TheRedHat · 23/05/2021 09:33

@Rainbunny I also enjoyed it! There was something quite touching about everyone being genuinely relieved that they could have a good time after all the covid restrictions.

EishetChayil · 23/05/2021 09:37

It's such an embarrassment, as are the people who enjoy it!

bagsofshite · 23/05/2021 09:37

Some really cruel and unnecessary comments about JN’s appearance. Why!? Eurovision is camp and fun, it’s not to be taken seriously. Some of the posters on here are rather lacking in a sense of humour. The german song was by far the worst. JN didn’t deserve to be last. Re the Brexit thing, plenty of the other countries competing aren’t in the EU either.

Livelovebehappy · 23/05/2021 09:38

The whole set up is a complete joke. It’s no longer about the best song (it used to be many years ago), but about the politics. Some countries are clueless when it comes to music, hence why the best songs in the music industry come from the USA or the UK.

Doomsdayisstillcoming · 23/05/2021 09:38

@MidnightMeltdown

I'm not convinced that this is down to Brexit. Half the countries aren't even in the EU. Even Australia gave us nothing!
Yeah and they are getting a stellar trade deal.

Unbelievable.

sotiredofthislonelylife · 23/05/2021 09:40

@thecapitalsunited

I’m pretty sure we send shit acts on purpose so we don’t have to pay to host it. And because the bbc understand that we love nothing more than moaning about how we were robbed.
How right you are!

🤣🤣🤣

Dora33 · 23/05/2021 09:40

Yabu. The uk entry ticked all the.boxes.for nill points, bland song ( couldnt even remember the song name once singer finished), amateur staging & terrible singing.
Only country who was similar was Ireland. Maybe ireland & UK could have a pub / karaoke singoff. James could maybe run on a treadmill while singing like irsh singer did. Might make it a entertaining as to who manages to stay on.
.
UK & Ireland haven't a hope of winning if they send relatively unknown singers, who havent good singing voices.
Also Italian entry had large online following with millions of streaming of song. Iceland similar. Dont know about other top finishing countries. Maybe the country's Judges might be put off by UK not treating contest serious in not sending a known professional singer with decent song.
But public voting will he down to singer's online presence, performance & staging.

Beautiful3 · 23/05/2021 09:40

They hate us and our song/singer was awful. Why send an over weight, mediocre singer. My uncle can sing better than that! The UK entrant always receives hardly any points because no-one likes us. I can imagine its hard to get a good singer who doesn't mind losing on a spectacular level! It must be a real career killer! Remember me, I scored zero in the Eurovision song contest?!

GerryManderson · 23/05/2021 09:42

It's totally unfair to allow our artists to be insulted and humiliated by that bunch of cabbage munchers.

It's time for Brexit II: Die Harder. It's clear they don't want us there. Leave them to get on with it, we're done. Fuck 'em.

the80sweregreat · 23/05/2021 09:44

The best English songs were sung by an Australian ( Gina G) and an American ( Katrina , who won it in 97)
Don't send a Brit next year!
Poor James, although he took it well.
(It's a badge of honour getting 0 anyway. )

Bluethrough · 23/05/2021 09:45

Pathetic these "They hates us" comments.

Its a professional and public vote, involving countries not in the EU or even Europe but also ones with close UK ties.

I guess thats why our football teams never win either?

DogInATent · 23/05/2021 09:45

Nine pages and no one's yet mentioned that Amanda Holden's contribution probably guarantees zero points next year too?

Rainbunny · 23/05/2021 09:47

As others have said, I think part of the problem for the us is that as a country we think the Eurovision contest is naff and cringey (well because it is really) so none of of our best singing talent wants to be associated with it. The funny thing is that if the USA was involved I can totally see Lady Gaga or Katy Perry jumping all over it (of course Beyonce would be too cool to bother).

Perhaps a petition could be started to beg a decent singer to take one for "Team UK" next year! I have no idea who, I'm so out of step with recent music.

wonkylegs · 23/05/2021 09:47

Surely nobody watches EV because it's good, we watch because it's surreal, ridiculous and a huge laugh.
It's not highbrow entertainment, it's a load of fun and it brings us together as we laugh at stupid finger costumes, dead orval suits and disembodied dancing pants.
I'm pretty sure for most people it's not about who wins.

RolloTomassi · 23/05/2021 09:49

Tbh we often send rubbish that none of us would choose to listen to, so we don't deserve to do well. But I think half the other countries enter total shite too and still get points, so clearly politics plays some part.

£500k just for the privilege of entering is obscene, so I'd bin the current approach and try to genuinely qualify with a decent entry!

ATieLikeRichardGere · 23/05/2021 09:49

I don’t get what makes it pathetic to say “they hate us” though? To put it another way, we’ve got no one giving us friendship points like other countries do.

RealhousewifeofStoke · 23/05/2021 09:50

@EishetChayil

It's such an embarrassment, as are the people who enjoy it!
Embarrassment to who exactly? Grin
RiverSkater · 23/05/2021 09:52

Other nations are so well behaved I suppose ! 😆 What about Russia who go about poisoning their enemies and where it's legal to beat your wife to a pulp? 🤔

It's the songs! I really liked the Lithuanian one and it received the top uk public vote.

The highlight of the evening was the Icelandic guy asking for Yaya Ding Diong. Smile

Because in telly addicts there are 4 threads criticising every single participant's appearance? Because Graham Norton and Terry Wogan did it? Twas ever so. Yet crap singer and also badly dressed Brit is special?
